Thanks Matt, this is awesome. After getting my DEXA results back I want to go from 121 pounds to 131 pounds of muscle, and 27% to 17% body fat. Daunting goals, but if I can at least get both trending in the right direction in a year‘s time I’ll consider that a success.

Having excess fat is good for building muscle with bodyweight training. You'll get bigger while getting smaller. Worked for me.

Hey Matt, do you know some exercises for external hip rotation?

If u have "excess" bodyfat, dont u technically have a calorie surplus, even though ure eating at maintenance?

That’s because muscle growth is protein dependent, not calorie dependent. Exogenous protein plus endogenous fat equals muscle growth at a caloric “deficit”.
The myth that you can’t build muscle at a caloric “deficit” came from lean people who need to eat more protein and energy to meet the demands of muscle growth.

the other part is that in the absence of stimulus esp in a deficit people tend to lose muscle ie people ending up skinnyfat after just using something like ozempic to stick to a deficit and zero lifting. so if you are dropping a pound a week then zero gains is probably perfectly acceptable.
good point about “preparatory” elements. i dont think you are unable to make gains til these things are done but it will certainly help paying your dues to learn the moves, how to train reasonably close to failure etc

Dear Matt, gaining weight in the form of muscle (and not as fat) is for some of us incredible difficult. I'm trying, and have been stuck for a while. I thinking in years, not months. In any case I'll keep going. It's funny because I don't have to worry about getting fat😀 Cheers

So following the line of thinking that you don't need to be in a caloric surplus to build muscle, do you think newbie gains are due more to the introduction of stimulus vs someone eating more? I know I didn't need to make a conscious effort to eat more for at least three months into my fitness journey. But I still put on muscle, got stronger, and became more toned/defined in those three months.

if you are low bodyfat or like 100lbs yes the gains will be limited by not gaining weight. if you lost fat (sounds like it if you got more defined) while making gains you didnt quite need to gain weight to gain muscle yet.

But I did gain weight during that time, and
it had to have been muscle. I always chalked it up to my body better utilizing the calories/protein I was already eating as a way to deal with the added stimulus of exercise. @@justasquatspecialist
