DIRT Makes You Happy

  • Most gardeners will tell you that digging in the dirt makes them happy, some even call it therapeutic. This small group of gardeners from Telferton Allotment in Edinburgh, see their hobby as the perfect antidote to the modern world, a way of reclaiming some of the intangible things we've lost in our busy, dirt-free lives.
While making this film, we were reminded that putting your hands into the soil can make you feel good - literally!

Your films are like medicine! I could literally feel my body chemistry change when I watched. Must be the joy and delight at meeting these precious people & having my heart open seeing this slice of heaven on earth they are all a part of. This film is one of my favorites. Beautiful. Love the sense of community, the passion they collectively share for gardening, and how for all of them it's such a holistic experience. And...can I just say...those drone shots?!!! Wow. What a great perspective! You all are mastering what you do. The visuals, the story, the music. Words can't express what is in my heart. Thank you for another inspiring film that completely made my day and my week.

@Linda Parisi - we happened to stumble upon this community garden by accident, and from the second we stepped through the gate, we felt a sense of peace and community. What they have created is truly breathtaking, and the shared energy and enthusiasm for their gardens, each other, and their local community, is very special. If you ever find yourself in Edinburgh, take a trip to Telferton Allotments - such a treat. xx

Amazing how your tastebuds have a memory. They remember what real food tastes like. I grew heirloom string beans. Fixed a pot with potatoes. Cried. It was like being at my Mom’s kitchen table again. No stringless beans bought from a market ever had that taste.

My garden is partly under the huge tree sometimes I wake to a tragedy that falls on birds, their nests blown by wind and their chicks fell on my veggie beds and sometimes eggs crashed out of the nests on my plants. its never a dull moment in my garden every morning.

I am in Cape Town and have been gardening for 80 years. When lockdown came there was total isolation ,so I started propagating cuttings from my cottage garden, and when Spring arrived I opened the garden and my plants sold to a joyous crowd. My nursery is open all the time. It keeps me occupied I make gorgeous compost and do all the work myself, yet never forced. But when I go into the garden for a quick inspection, I usually forget all time and get stuck in, until hunger tells the time of day

      Dear Carol,
      Dear Nancy,
      Dear Green Renaissance,
Thank you so much for the channel and the possibilities to meet you here.
I love you all, although I barely know you. I deeply believe all beings are connected with each other because that's what the nature does and has always been doing - all the time.
I am Chinese currently living in Germany, was once called Carol by my English teacher when I was going to school in China. My given name is name of a tree (chinese character 椿, with a tree on the left and with spring on the right). The character has also the meaning "planting a tree in spring". And I was born on the date of the Planting Day and exactly in the year, in which China had its very first Planting Day.
My husbund, dutch and german, has been fascinated by everything and every topic that has to do with permaculture for decades. I've been totally infected with his deep love for the nature, trees, plants, flowers and cob tiny houses etc. Our small but very sweet home is full of plants that I'm taking care of day in and day out. For me they are a solid part of my life I would never want to miss again. We are now planning to have our own project which I'm really excited about, probably to be carried out in Italy.
I love reading and philosophy too. The books of Emanuele Coccia became my favorites. His languages and words in combination with his philosophical minds and souls, deeply connected to the natural world, are afflicted with magic. My mother died six years ago. I have been missing her so much. Sometimes I think she is not only in my heart, but everywhere I see, touch, smell and feel the nature, seeing me and protecting me.
      In love and connection,
      Chun

In the garden I think about him while I do gardening in different ways of grief . Happier when I grew my own potatoes, fruits and enjoy seeing birds and beautiful insects fly around me. I always think Markus will be happy to see me in the garden. We should have some small space to do our own supermarket. It is organic and safe to eat without chemicals. My country is Thailand we are in tropical we can grow vegetables all years round. I grew mangoes, banana, potatoes, herbs, papayas, dragon fruits . Love it! When I was a child I was part of a community garden. My best friend and I shared an allotment. As an adult in my early 20’s I began gardening and could spend hours planting and creating. I began dreaming of building a business to share my joy with others. I’m 56 now and for 19 years I’ve turned my hobby into my career. Gardening has saved my life on so many levels. When I was 35 my husband died of leukemia and gardening and watching the plants my husband planted grow each year has brought me so much joy and a feeling of connection to all living things. In 2012, my dear brother ended his life. My brother and I loved to garden together. Again in grief, it was planting and gardening that saved me. In 2016 I ended an emotionally abusive relationship. Through all my hardships, breaking free from this man was the most difficult thing I ever had to overcome. He tried his best to destroy me and my business but again I kept doing what I was meant to do which is create design and plant. I feel an uncontrollable energy when I’m creating garden, I see it how it should be and I do what needs to be done….it’s really so simple. I think mother Theresa said it best, “do small things with great joy.” When we create Beaty around us we are nurturing our soul. I believe every school should have a growing program where children grow food and donate to those in need. Sending blessings to my fellow gardeners. I’m on Instagram #gardensbyrachel and I’m passionate about planting and sharing beautiful photographs. 🙏

Thank You all from the allotments i Scotland. I miss Scotland. We have allotments here in Denmark established for the so called working class in the cities in order for the people to get good vitamins, but like most things nowadays its become "neat" and expencive, because one must by and not like before, pay an affordable rent every year. I should love to have a small allotment in Scotland and live in the garden-shed; yes, I do beleve one lives longer, when working and being with plants; We grow Them ourselves, yes, but still its Nature. Peace and love to You all❤🌳🍓🥔🍏🍉🥦

Though my arthritic back complains, and I don't move as fast as I did when I started out, this 69 year old is working on his 21st consecutive garden here in Michigan, USA. Even a small garden can be a personal sanctuary, a place of work and calm at the same time.

If i have a house with ample space for lawn. My ex in law house had a big lawn, so that planted many plants. Mango tree, banana plant, hibiscus, basil plant, drumstick tree and other potted plants. I never really did gardening there because that i was too busy with work and studies. Moreover, all the plants were well grown. Nothing much to do except watering them.
