Hey Grandma! I made this today as I said I would . It was very easy to make . it’s a nice simple cake that goes great with milk or coffee. I wanted to make it so I could experience first hand what it tasted like to have something that my very grandmother might have also had way back then when the depression was among America. It’s really neat to be able to do that and I bet this was a real treat or used to fill the empty bellies of so many back then with a cup of coffee. Thank you again for sharing and I hope you can find other depression foods to share.
Thank you for letting me know you made the cake. Glad you liked it and yes it was real treat at that time. I will be making more depression era recipes❤️👩🏻
In 1998, a retired gentleman (Norman Penny) published in the local newspaper a recipe for his mother's "Swedish coffee bread". It was almost identical to this cake except that (1) he used, as a leavener, yeast instead of baking powder, and (2) he rolled the dough into a roll and then joined the ends of the roll to form a ring; then he baked it and drizzled cardamom-flavored icing on it. I've made it repeatedly over the years, so it was a surprise to see this version.

I'm going to get me some of those Pyrex pans. I'm tired of the metal ones making cornbread, cakes and brownies taste like rusted metal. I used to have old metal pans that didn't do that but stupid me, I threw them out because I couldn't get them clean. That was before I discovered Barkeeper's Friend. Yes, I've hand slapped my forehead many times for throwing them out.
I clean all my metal pots and pans with Brillo and they stay like new. Some are over 50 years old. I love my Pyrex items. Thank you so much for watching.❤️Grandma👩🏻

I LOVE these Depression era recipes! 🙂👍 (The poor man's raisin cake was and is delicious! 😋 )
But where is the COFFEE in this one?? 🤔 Watching to the end to see.. 🙂
It is not made with coffee it was named because it goes well with a cup of coffee. This cake is delightful on its own or even better with a cup of coffee or tea. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
@@GrandmaFeral Yes! 💯👍
That's a lovely smooth-workimg egg-beater you have, as well. 🙂👍 (I had one a few years ago, but it didn't work.smoothly.)
Thank you I had this one for years. I was surprised to see Amazon sells the egg beater.❤️Grandma👩🏻

You two are so cute!
Thank you for your kind words and for watching👩🏻
You could tell the second Grandpa put his fork into his piece of cake it's a good cake.
But to make sure you knew G-pa said good three times!
Thank you for watching 👩🏻
For sake of interest, was it difficult to get hold of salt during the depression years?
I don’t think so. I just cook without salt. I just get the natural salt from vegetables.❤️Grandma👩🏻

I make this all the time a cinnamon crumb topping
Thank you for sharing about making the cake with a cinnamon crumb topping. I will definitely try the crumb topping. Thank you for watching👩🏻
I don't have an 8x8 dish. I suppose I'll have to.use 2 loaf tins.
If you have a large loaf pan the batter may fit in one large pan. If not two small loaf pans should be ok❤️Grandma👩🏻
@@GrandmaFeral 💯👍
I have one of those. Call it an Amish egg beater
Thank you for sharing what you call your egg beater and thank you for watching👩🏻
Mix the cinnamon and sugar together and then spinkle on top.
Thanks for sharing. Will do that next time I made the cake.👩🏻
What if I don't have a sifter 🥺
Hi you can use a strainer or use a whisk that will loosen up the flour. Thank you for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
