  • The Briggs and Stratton 550EX is used on various push mower brands and features easy start technology. Changing the oil in the Briggs and Stratton 550EX is very simple to do at home but a little different from different motors. This push mower is a Troy Bilt, but the same engine is used on Craftsman, Snapper, and Poulan Pro. The oil change should be performed at the beginning of each mowing season. The oil type for this engine is 30wt.

Quick little tip for you guy if you just take a grocery bag and put it under the gas cap and then put the gas cap back on you can turn the motor over with a full tank of gas and don't have to worry about spill 😎

On my snapper. The air filter has a tiny hole going to the gas tank. U can put a lil drill bit in there. Or something to avoid gas coming out of there to. But yea. I put a plastic sand which bag.

Just do this whole process over your burn pile, no problems and you don't have to collect the oil in a recycle can.

If you've just added a full tank of gas but then remembered you need to change the oil use a plastic bag over the fuel fill hole or a rubber glove and screw the cap back on. Worked for me.

I use a clean and empty shampoo bottle pump to pump the oil out, though I realize most people eschew siphoning or suction in deference to gravity or pouring which probably gets that last drop. My big question is where is the filter? It seems that the 550ex has no oil filter. I use synthetic oil and it remains amber colored and clean between yearly changes, though I still would expect some type of filter to exist.

      @CoolStuffGuysLike  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It could be if you are mowing too steep of a hill and it is working up into the cylinder. If you are mowing steep and see smoke, then that is the problem. Or if you are running to light of weight oil. You could try a 40 or 50 weight. If the engine is wearing, the oil could more like easily get into the combustion chamber. Worst case it could be worn out and leaking through the Piston rings but as a lawnmower you could just top up every week or two and get a lot more use out of it as long as it starts and still has good power

Extremely easy for engineering to design a drain plug in the bottom.
BUT, that would reduce the profits.
    Eff the consumers 🖕🖕

Thanks for telling and showing the stupid design on these motors!!!! You HAVE to empty your gas and TIP the mower to drain it instead of a drain plug underneath?! We’ll be sure to avoid this engine in the future! Thanks again for sharing-

This angers me what is wrong with a drain plug makes me want to buy a different mower

why not an easy off plug? This drain style is not likely to drain gunk on thembottom of the oil tank. Also, any oil drain instructions mention to pull the spark plug,to avoid an unexpected start.dont know why this vid omits this.

This vid omits it because it is so dam stupid.

Your saying a mower can start without pulling the cord? I doubt that alot

@@simonjack8122 Before they put the safety handle on you could. Spin the blade. That is why they put the safety handle on.

Safety handle? Not sure what you mean by that,
you'd have to really try hard to start it by the blades with your hands, it wouldnt happen easily

@@simonjack8122 There is a bar by the handle you have to hold it down to start the mower. Have you used a mower in the last 50 years?

ROTFLMAO Take the drain plug out. It's easier, "Trust me"

Most Briggs and Stratton vertical shaft engines from series 300 to 550 actually do not have a drain plug. The oil change procedure is to pour the oil from the fill tube per the owner's manual and the Briggs and Stratton website. I actually prefer it over the drain plug though. No oil on your hand and no picking away grass residue to expose the oil plug.

I just propped my mower up and was shocked to see no plug. My last briggs and Stratton had a plug, but not this one. When you watch the Briggs and Stratton video to change the oil they use a siphon connected to a tank. Aggravating. Now I have to get another tool from the hardware store.

I can see why Briggs & Stratton went bankrupt with stupid ideas like removing the drain plug so you can't get all the oil and contaminates out of the motor.

I thought the same thing but after doing it a couple times, I think I actually prefer the dump method. No tools, and no dried up or wet grass residue to deal with. Just dump and fill. Not that it was difficult with a plug but this is about as easy as it gets.

Dumbest cost-cutting design ever for a mower! My son gave me his Snapper and I couldn’t find a drain plug ‘cause there isn’t one. Turning the mower upside down is so ridiculous! Crappy design.

I thought that also at first but it honestly is a little faster. You just remove the cap and dump it vs having to dig out the grass to get to the drain plug. They really should spell that out with some labels though. I'm assuming most of you got to this video after searching for a drain plug and not finding one.
