Saw footage of Cruyff as a kid, and saw a replay of the WC loss to Germany and became a Netherlands / Ajax fan instantly.
In '94 when the WC was in the States, I was a valet at a restaurant in Dallas when a group of Dutch supporters came in for dinner the night before the game against Brazil.
I chatted them up when I saw them and was pretty familiar with Dutch football via EA Sports soccer video games (I was always Ajax or the Netherlands 😊) and was asking their thoughts on potential starting rosters and the like and they seemed tickled that a random Texan was a fan.
Turned out a member of their party was back at the hotel with some sort of illness and had told them there was no way he was going to be able to go. They offered me his ticket to sit with them, and I had the greatest experience.
I had literally never seen soccer live, and this turned out to be one of the best games ever played. I swear I was walking on air for a week.
Was heartbroken they lost, as the Dutch fans were just so friendly and fun. I was unaware of the singing and carrying on that goes on in the crowds of those games, and it was so different than the atmosphere at a random American sports event.
Since then, I have continued to watch Oranje, and sport my National jersey regularly, and continue to hope that one day they will finally hoist the World Cup. I feel like no country has produced as many great players and not won it.

One of the best sides I ever saw, this 88' Netherlands. Van Basten was the world's best scorer by a long shot, but Gullit was probably the best player in the world at that moment. What a delight.

They came to Wembley an destroyed us (England)and also in this tournament what a fantastic team.

I was 9 too. I was playing outside when the tournament was on. We were building a “hut”, hideout of scrap planks etc. But back then tv was analog and so everyone was having the same content at the exact same time. And then the roar coming from all houses at the same time was quite impressive as a child. Never experienced that again. Nowadays with streaming everyone is a few seconds different so you don’t get that massive cheer anymore.

I was born after the 74-78 totaalvoetbal years with Michels and Cruyff, but as a young impressionable boy in 1988 I fell in love with Oranje. Big moments I remember are Marco van Basten's hattrick against England, and the very tight semi-final against West Germany, with first a penalty to the Germans, then the Dutch, and then van Bastens goal at the very end. Both my older brothers were fans of Germany, but I stood my ground. Of course I remember this final, too, but even for a 7 year old it was a bit of a blur. I had fallen in love. To be fair, to be more precise, the effect was even bigger. Gullit, van Basten, Koeman, Rijkhard, Bosman and company didn't make me fall in love only with that specific team or subsequent iterations of the Oranje, but also with football as a sport (I played until U18 on a high level), with spectator sports as a whole, with the Netherlands as a nation, with Dutch as a language... the effect was profound. And I'm from Finland. Later when our own Jari Litmanen played a big part of his career for Ajax, it didn't exactly lessen my love :D I have since travalled to the Netherlands many times and learned enough of the language to be able to read simple text (can understand if I read a newspaper, unless it's about very complex issues), but understanding spoken dutch is still difficult. In 1998 I was heartbroken when perhaps the best Oranje I've seen (van der Saar, both de Boers, Cocu, Davids, Jonk, Kluivert, Seedorf, van Bronckhorst, Overmars, Kluivert, Bergkamp) lost on penalties to Brazil in the semi-final. And I had really really liked Brazil, too, since 1990 or at the very least since 1994, so I was a bit surprised with how dissapointed I was. It was perhaps the first time I was reminded of that one can only have one favorite. I really liked Tiki-Taka, too, and developed a fondness for Spain because of it. But I got this same reminder in 2010. I travelled to the Netherlands to see the final, I chose the student city of Groeningen over Amsterdam, to have a better, more intimate party, and I thought that I wouldn't be so dissapointed if Spain wins, because I liked their play, too. How wrong was I. It was an even bigger dissapointment than 1998. No need to talk more about that dissapointment, but it left a wound in my heart, probably very similar to what those older generations felt when experiencing 1974 and 1978. In the 2012 euro qualifications Holland and Suomi were drawn into the same qualifying group, but that was not a problem. I went to see Finland's home game dressed in Orange, and I made some friends (who were dumbfounded). It did not feel wrong to support a team against my home nation, which I love and cherish. As Finland has since become more of a contender to participate in Euros and maybe in worlds, too, it could be more difficult in the future if (and eventually when) they meet. I believe, that I won't be too dissapointed if my country Finland beats my team Oranje, but I may be in for a third reminder, that one can only have one favorite team...

It is impossible to compare the Olympic Games with a European Championship. But indeed, the USSR were very strong and the Netherlands had a bit of luck in the final. If Belanov would have scored that penalty for example things might have gone quite differently. This USSR team was not lucky against the low countries, also losing to Belgium two years earlier after giving away an advantage twice.

@@peterkonings9084 Helaas niet, alleen achteraf. Maar die bal op de paal heb ik wel honderd keer gezien. We hadden vroeger thuis een videoband met samenvatting van alle WK van 1950 tot en met 1990. Elke keer als ik bij 1974 en 78 aankwam tijdens het bekijken deed ik net alsof ik in een andere dimensie zou zijn en dat toch ineens Nederland wel gewonnen had. Ik zat er tijdens het kijken als kleine jongen echt op te wachten dat het ineens anders zou zijn. Helaas nooit gelukt om in die andere dimensie te kijken 🙂

Must have been a very special feeling for Rinus Michels, to win the title at this stadium, where 14 years earlier he had lost the Word Cup Final.
I really wish Holland won more (1978, 2010 WCs) and Euro (2000) (though France was its peak). This side was really good along with the sides of the 70s and early 2010s. More consistency like Germany would have done the trick.
Netherlands circa 2010s was decent, not less, not more. Not exactly a world beater (in a period where Italy, France were in decline and Germany was just building its team). Spain eventually beating them just proved that back then.
@@iqbalmuhammad2920 The Netherlands is not only 3 times runner up at WC's, but also among the smallest countries. Uruguay is the winner among the smallest countries so far by winning 2 WC titles in history a long time ago. After that, it never happened again.
This contest is not for small countries. This contest is for big countries, with the biggest amount of money in club investments (also at amature level) and therefore enough to compete in the strongest competitions. I forsee it will become more and more difficult for small countries like the Netherlands to get along with it and reaching a WC final; it still remains a very small probability.

Och wat een tijd, echt bizar hoe blij iedereen was. Wat een feest, krijg er nog kriebels van en dan ook nog, vooral in die tijd, op de bodem vd vijand de titel halen.
Mis het non modern voetbal, spijkerhard, sokjes omlaag, ongeschoren etc. Bedrijven hebben vooral met geld het voetbal naar de knoppen geholpen.

Ik was toen op de camping in België die vol zat met Nederlanders, je zag niemand op straat en toen de wedstrijd was afgelopen gingen we de kantine in feest vieren. De Belgen wisten niet wat ze zagen, geweldig dit. Dit team had in 1990 wereldkampioen moeten worden.

Group 2 was amazing, apart from England. Ireland played the Soviets off the park in the group and just couldn't get the 2nd killer goal. Then were extremely unfortunate to concede a freakish late goal against the Netherlands, in a game Netherlands had to win. Great tournament.

I was in Utrecht at the time trying to get home - but public transport came to a halt because fans where jumping up and down on the roof of buses. Finally I did not care - all the pubs where a sea of orange and finally the dutch lion had conquered. I decided to get drunk like everybody else. Good times.

I remember after the match we went outside for a drive in the car ,It was like the whole city dressed in orange and went outside. I mean everyone! (The Hague ,Holland) walking ,driving in cars with orange bed sheets over them hahaha.
