Just heard of your passing, and I had to come here to listen to my favorite one more time. My heart weeps, but your incredible talent will live forever.
I wish she could see the outpouring of love under these videos. I've read that she fretted that her music wasn't more popular. Well, the people who could appreciate beauty sure loved it, Nanci...
It's not about how many records/units the artist can sell. It's about quality of writing and performance; integrity of the body of work; inspiring listeners through laying thoughts and feelings out for all to hear / witness. Nanci has always been a true CLASSIC. RIP, Angel
When I heard it the first few times, it didn't hit me like so many other Nanci songs, it hadn't taken hold of me too much. But then over time, listening to her several times, I started to like it more and more, especially when I read the lyrics of the song. But now I like it a lot, I'm happy to listen to it. Nanci is not just a good composer, singer and musician, but she is an extraordinary performer, she manages to transmit her feeling while her sings, I really love this sincerity. I am in love with Nanci's art. A loving Lady, and thanks Nanci, thank you very kindly, Nanci
You wanna see RESPECT, you wanna see FRIENDSHIP, you wanna see ADMIRATION, just look at the bass player's expression between 1:07 and 1:11, PRICELESS! R.I.P. Nanci!
Who cares what her politics are. She has fed my soul through hard times and good. Shame her voice is starting to age but I would still love her to come to the uk so I could see her live before it's too late.
She is an outspoken liberal. She wears an LBJ button because of his work for the poor and civil rights. She also is a huge supporter of Vietnam Veterans of America and for a landmine free world.
LBJ was a butcher. His policies resulted in the needless deaths of thousands of Vietnamese and 48,658 America soldiers. Hardly a pin I would wear. I love her music but she is grossly misinformed about this racist egotist.
LBJ is the most underrated President of the 20th. C. He had guts in carrying through civil rights, knowing, as he said, that the South would be lost to the party for a generation, and unlike Obama he knew how to get things done. Working Congress he wheedled, cajoled and threatened: often in the same sentence!
I only knew the version of the album and the concert at Austin, both very good. This one is so lovely "energized"! Does anyoby know who plays so joyfully the Telecaster and interacts so nicely with Nanci ?
Nanci Griffith has been an ardent supporter of social causes, so if she wears a button upon her lapel. i say, go for it! i am not a fan of anything from Texas, however there are exceptions and Nanci is sure one of them.
It always amazes me when conservatives come on these threads of wonderful artists who write such introspective, moving songs and then fret in surprise about their politics. Artists who are so in touch with their humanity are GOING to be liberal, folks. You can't be in touch with your humanity and the compassion required to write lyrics like these and also have racist attitudes and think the poor should just starve, or that we should keep trashing the earth. The two personality types are simply not compatible. If you like her music, then maybe there is a decent liberal in you crying to get out.
Liberals or leftists have no monopoly on humanity or compassion: one can be both conservative and compassionate or empathic. Enough with all these caricatures, please.
@@SergeCeyral I'm 55 and haven't seen any sign of what you speak of yet, Serge. Other than George W. Bush once adopting "compassionate conservative" as an empty slogan. When and where did you see this mythical animal?
@@markw4206 As a frenchie, I'm not a fine connoisseur of american politicians enough to quote anyone in that species. However, I was, some years ago, in the San Antonio Tx, Mercado, at lunchtime. A white, well dressed business man (and looking pretty wealthy, as his watch was worth, at least, a six-month blue collar salary!) came next to us . He was carrying his lunch tray, as he saw a homeless, sitting on the floor, and begging for food. He turned his back, bought exactly the same lunch, took the man by the sleeve and invited him at his own table. Believe me, this would never happen in France, where most people drop a small bill and look away: might it be an acceptable definition for compassionate conservatism?
@formerdoc - the Civil Rights Act of 1964, proposed by Kennedy, passed by LBJ, was opposed by most Southern Democrats and all Southern Republicans. After its passage the racist Southerners moved to the Republican Party in droves. Both Nixon and Reagan appealed to Southern racists to become President. LBJ predicted that the Democrats would lose the South for a generation - he underestimated. So which party was committed to Civil Rights? Rush Limbaugh is a poor source for historical info.
I do like much of her music and she is entitled to any political opinion she chooses. I like Joan Baez, too, but they can both keep their politics to themselves. I assume, perhaps wrongly, that the comment that contains an "ad hominem" attack is directed toward me. I have benefitted from Medicare personally as it relates to my own health but it is an entitlement that is going to eventually end up as limiting access to care when physicians stop accepting patients on Medicare (or ObamaCare).
He favored Civil rights but look at the vote: Democratic Party: 46-21 (69%-31%) Republican Party: 27-6 (82%-18%) Tell me which Party was more committed to Rights and I expect she doesn't know that and just automatically pulls the Democrat lever
James O'Brien the parties have moved. Republicans used to be more liberal. democrats were mire conservative. now they all are center to right of center. very few dems are liberal or progressive like FDR or johnson or kennedy. 3rd way democrat, neoliberal obama is further right than nixon. do some real research or you are the one just pulling the lever.
Rest in peace Nancy, It feels like I have just lost one of my best friends tonight!

A great song that just goes to show that Nanci Griffith is among the finest female American singers of the last 25 years!
You were loved Nanci....some of the best times in my life are tied to your music.....RIP beautiful lady.
Oh Nanci, you have left us all behind with the radio on!
What a wonderful artist. You left us all to soon Nanci.
You are missed.
I made a 40-year career out of it. "When you can't find a friend, you've still got the radio."
Nancy will live forever, just got to listen to the radio.
That guitar player KILLS! What a tasteful solo. RIP N. G.

@@alderete74 you got that right about LBJ. He and Fred Korth hated JFK for wanting to get us out of Nam. Nancy would agree if she only knew.

I'd like to find her one appearance at the Grand Ole Opry...
I love you Nanci!

She has said that she admires LBJ because of his accomplishments on civil rights and other social issues.
Since I was a 31 year old voter in 1964, I don't need Limbaugh to evaluate events which occurred in my adult lifetime.
