  • In the 1962 movie “Taras Bulba”, the Cossacks of the Steppes (today’s Ukraine) come together. Taras wants to fight oppression and make the Steppes free.
He says to a Cossack regiment leader, “You swore to wear a patch over one eye until the Steppes were free. Cover both eyes, Tymoshevsky, so you cannot see yourself!”
Taras Bulba then says to the entire Cossack assembly, “Look to the heavens, Cossacks! The sun stands at the equinox. The Holy Easter dawns. Let the day of the Resurrection of our Lord be the day of the resurrection of our land!”

Since i was a child, whenever I am asked my favorite movie I say Taras Bulba. As of yet nobody has ever heard of the movie. 50 plus years and counting.

I remember seeing it as a kid as well, but even then the only thing that spoilt it was Tony Curtis, I would have made a more convincing Cossack!

I saw this in a movie theater over 60 years ago, when I was seven. This scene of thousands of men coming together for a cause thrills me to this day. But the more indelible scene was when Taras shoots his son Andre in the heart. I'm writing a memoir and relate to this scene.

That movie had some of the flaws of a Hollywood historical epic of its era, but it also has a lot of the magnificence. Thanks for reminding me of it.

Commenters on this forum should know that Taras Bulba and the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks fought against the Poles, not against the Russians. In the 17th century, no Cossack recognized himself as Ukrainian. Ukraine does not exist either as a term or as a state.
At that time, the catholics Poles were the bad guys against whom the Cossack bands fought.

And the Cossack were the good guys, right? You make me laugh. 😆

@@mahisolin9170 You can laugh until you crack, but this is the true story. Zaporozhian Cossacks were mercenaries and fought for whoever paid better. The Poles occupied their lands and forced the population to convert to Catholicism. For this reason, the Cossacks recognized the domination of the Russians and accepted the perpetual alliance with them. At least make the effort to document yourself properly.

@@d74rjm Zaporozhian Cossacks were subjects of the Polish King, not mercenaries. No one forced them to convert to Catholicism. In Ruthenia generally only nobility and elites converted to Catholicism. Why? Because they were attracted by the Polish culture, which at that time flourished. That's why almost all of them adopted the Polish language, customs and religion. The Poles occupied their lands? Tell me in which war Poland invaded Zaporizhia and started that "occupation"? I am really curious. 😀

Typical Hollywood "Glory" movie hoping to be a blockbuster, merely rising to the ridiculous.. Little if any correlation with the actual book.

Mykola Hohol is Ukrainian you dim wit born in 1809 in Poltava from a well known Cossack family. His ancestors participated in Kmelnetsky uprising and lifting the siege of Vienna in 1683 . This story was based on a friend who told a story of his great grandfather being killed because he changed sides to fight with the Polish Commonwealth army.
