  • A magnificently restored 1932 Mack Model AP designed specifically at the behest of Six Companies of Boulder, Colorado for the construction of the Hoover Dam. Only twelve of these massive dump trucks where ever assembled, this one being number 7, only two examples still exist today. Lovingly and painstakingly restored by Ron Carey of Alberta, Canada over the course of three years, this truck was returned to it's original form as it looked off the factory floor. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.

    Very nice!
    As a retired underground miner, I can't imagine what those brave, tough people went through with such hard work done in the extreme heat building a masterpiece!
    Much respect.

    Wow that is cool. As a 5 or 6 year old kid I remember chain drive dumptrucks driving past our house. This would have been 1969-70 so they were old trucks still in use. I do not remember what brand they were but I could hear them coming and would put down my Tonka trucks to run out and watch them go by.

    Excellent restoration job. My dad hauled coal in a truck very similar to this. The rear wheels ran off and he had a really nasty ride to the bottom of a huge hill. He always drove a international after that

    Wow, I never realized how close I was to this fascinating piece of history in my past. I grew up in the San Diego area and Campo was a regular destination, and I took my first real train ride at the railroad museum in Campo in 1986. Also, I visited the railroad museum at Perris, CA several times in the late 80's and early 90's. I now live in Arizona and have been to and crossed the Hoover Dam quite a few times. I too have seen the documentaries of the dam's construction and have seen possibly this very same truck in action more than 80 years ago. We're lucky to still have the 2 remaining trucks. I'd give you 5 thumbs up on this, if I could.

    After I completed truck driving school, I went to another state to apply as a truck drive, my first job driving a eighteen wheeler, and there were many others there, young and old. While there I got to talking to a old timer that started driving trucks that were chain driven! I had heard of such things but didn't know much about them, but his status went up quite a bit with me!

    I was so waiting for him to run the body all the way up...wanted to see how much angle the bed would get back in the day. Dump trucks I used to build for municipalities had to get at least a 50degree dump angle AND be able to lift the world! You know those trucks were always overloaded considering DOT isn't going to pull over a gov't vehicle.

    • @Rainhill1829
      @Rainhill1829  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, yes I don't know the rating on these trucks but I know it's impressive even by todays standards, but they where also designed with a specific purpose in mind. I believe these units could manage something on the order of 40 or 45 degrees, but most of their cargo was coarse material from the dam blasting so sticking wasn't really a problem.

    Ah, 1930's vintage. That explains the final-drive chain. British "Sentinel" brand steam trucks used a similar system for quite a while, before shaft-driven trucks were introduced.

    Please someone tell the truck owners they have the sign on the dump bed wrong. Six companies built boulder city Nevada to house the workers who built Boulder Dam (Hoover Dam) Six companies had no relationship to Boulder Colorado. Boulder Dam was named after the Boulder Canyon that it was to be built in but they decided Black Canyon farther down river was a better site so they built it there and later named the dam Hoover Dam. Look up the Boulder canyon project for more info.

    A major problem of geography here. Hoover Dam sits on the Nevada/Arizona, nowwhere near Boulder Colorado. Six Companies was in Boulder City, NV.

    • @Rainhill1829
      @Rainhill1829  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank Carroll That is an odd one. I think the Bureau of Reclamation sent these trucks off to other project in the US after the completion of the dam, maybe that explains the mix up.

    • @FrankCarroll_Nevada
      @FrankCarroll_Nevada 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rainhill1829 Yes, I agree that the BofRec did send a lot of equipment to other places, mainly to work on the Grand Coulee Dam. And, a lot of people get Boulder, Co mixed up with Boulder City, NV. However, Six Companies was based in Boulder City, NV, and was the prime contractor. Doing further research, Six Companies was moved to build Grand Coulee, then worked in the Pacific ocean during WWII to build airfields. I am just pointing out that these trucks were built for use at Hoover Dam, under Six Companies, and were most likely moved to Washington for work there. I would also add, I live and work in Boulder City, working at the railroad museum there, have also worked at the hoover Dam museum, and have several books on the Hoover Dam, Six Companies, and BLM/Bof Reclamation; plus I moved from the Denver/Boulder area in the late 1990s and the two large dams in that area are the Strontia Springs dam (1983) and the other dam, near Boulder, CO is the Barker Dam, built-in 1910. My point being, add city after Boulder, and then correct CO to NV. Yes, I do have a degree in history, just a matter of having the information presented correctly.
