John Steinbeck and his great American novel, The Grapes of Wrath, about the westward migration of people during the dust bowl in the Depression of the 1930's. From California: A Tribute.
i think this was the only book I've ever cried while reading. Very powerful, and makes you appreciate every meal you have.
The universal law that defines man is the inherent desire to grow and get better. Thank you, John Steinbeck.
uno dei miei romanzi preferiti! Bellissimo anche il film...con il grande -e quindi...sottovalutato!- John Carradine!
I love this movie. I think old school movies beat all of the modern ones. Such as this one, Glory, and many more.
John Steinbeck wrote a historical documentary from interviews he held. But, he didn't get the worst of the stories .... or maybe I am biased, because I actually lived through it.
The survivors learned from it .... but they never recovered from it. God bless them.
Steinbeck is the best writer ever.
That refers to drylandfarming in the middle west, where the harrowing in milelong rows crumbeled the soil and let to just that sand storms.
Michener describes it in his book and movie Colorado Saga.
You are correct. It was not so much the winds but farming practises caused the dust bowl. How sad but true. God bless them all.
I remember back in my freshman year I was forced to read Grapes of Wrath. I thought it was going to suck.
It didn't. It was a really good read and it gives you an idea of the hardships these people faced.
I have red some of the Steinbeck's masterpieces.
He is great!
Cheers from italy
who else is watching this for homework or online work?
me
This film and book should be reqired reading and viewing in EVERY school to show how lucky we are today and don't appreciated it with our many luxuries our money buys today.
@lilvjdude and it's just so well-written! you can't help but appreciate the people who were willing to fight for these people.
We still haven't learned from the mistakes of the past. We buy on credit, we over produce and we listen to corrupt politicians. Maybe it's best compared to drinking or smoking . We know it's bad for us , but we keep doing it anyway.
That's really sad, I'll probably have to read this book in school next year. I'll try not to choke up..

A classic poetic protest against indifference and the struggle for decency.

The book was based off of Patterson, CA.
You don't say?
I THANK GOD THAT I CAN GET HELP FROM HIM TO INCREASE MY FININCES BY INVESTING IN HIS WORK. TITHING WITH AN HONEST HEART BRINGS BLESSINGS.BUT THE ONLY BLESSINGS I CARE TO HAVE ARE THOSE I CAN PASS ON TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE IN NEED.
Most of your photographs are from the amazing photographer Dorothy Lange. It would be nice to give her art credit.
Who knows how many people arrived to California then?

I hope our moral Okies heed this warning and clean out the corrupt filled henhouse or this state may end up there again. I must also add, I hope most people are aware of the mini-drought has been here this year....
THE PREACHER :"WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET SENT TO THE PEN." TOM JOAD:" I KILLED A MAN AT A DANCE." = THE GRAPES OF WRATH.
our government penalizes farmers that grow food. they want to control the food sources here. Signs along california hiways say "welcome to the dust bowl California made" My moms family lived in the areas where the dust bowl was in those old days, it was horrible. They were really poor, descriminated against and had to start over...but they made it.Thank God
@CSATexan This Yankee says hoo-rah for Texas!
Steinbecks work is not just history ..it's economic/ sociology/ maorality....Should be more widely read.
Certes... Certes... Vous avez sûrement raison cher ami ^^
@CSATexan This Yankee says hoo-rah for Texas.
@TeenCretin just wanted to say that not everyone who disagrees with Obama loves Bush and Cheney....just sayin....there are people who see things in a completely different way from the major parties.....maybe we could start listening to them a little more?
@TeenCretin hahaha I'm one of those people.....I don't think they are worse. I think they make a lot of sense.
One of the greatest works. But I still think East of Eden was better :D
@TeenCretin Your name-calling insults are completely uncalled for. If you cannot have an intelligent debate, then please just keep your opinions to yourself. Name calling gets no one anywhere. I simply have a different point of view. Sheesh. Get a life.
I created a blog a few days ago and I was expecting to create a space in which people could express their feelings and opinions about "books".The first book I chose, to have people giving opinions about it was "the fall" by Albert Camus .The blog is : enrugados.blogspot.com. As a passioned follower of John Steinbeck as I'm sure you're too, we could create there a group of people willing to remember him in all is greatness and expose our opinions not only about his books, but also "all the others"
