My dad's neighbour owned a Windsor HO back in the 70s the thing would fishtail up the hill roaring into second and third gear smoke coming from the tyres i was in awe of them.

A shame this clip is so short. Unusually for Peter Wherret he misquoted the HT Monaro GTS as having the 327 motor when it actually had the iconic 350 motor. They were halcyon days and as a primary school child the competition between GMH and Ford was always a lively debate. Thanks for the memories:)

No you are incorrect. Fords first gt ran the 302 and the monaro won against 302 not because it was faster but because the fords had a huge tyre problem in fact the 302 was belting it. The following year the monaro came out in 350 and Ford the 351

@@MegaROCKY001 To clarify, the "first" Falcon GT was the XR - it ran the 289ci - It was the 327ci HK Monaro that ran against the 2nd series GT which was the XT that ran the 302ci V8

@@MegaROCKY001 No mate, YOU and Peter are in correct.
1969 Monaro ran the 350 versus the 351 Windsor powered GTHO.
      It goes like this
      1967- 289 XR GT v Everyone else
      1968- 302 XT GT v 327 Monaro
      1969- 351W XW GTHO v 350 Monaro
      1970- 351C XW GTHO v XU1's etc etc

No you are wrong x-ray gt came out first with a 289 ci engine

Actually the supercar scare of the early 70s was indirectly responsible for more dangerous road cars. Instead of dedicated performance models like the GTHO and the stillborn XU2 which had suspension and brakes designed to complement their performance we wound up with young drivers modifying existing models giving them all sorts of engine mods while the other aspects of the cars remained standard.

"a massive 327 cubic inch V8" yeah right - the Americans would laugh loudly at that - that is a small v8 and a small block Chev. Even the 351 was not overly large, although the 90 degree Clevo configuration made it look fairly sizable physically. Over 400 cubes and you are starting to be able to say it's a "big V8"

Indeed , we also had the 307 chev in some of the holdens ( i remeber a 307 in a sedan hooked up to a 2 speed auto ..... very smooth but very slow of the mark :) ) , the 350 chev , and as well in some holden models the locally produced 253 and 308 ci , the little 253 was never regarded as a performance motor , and generally it was a bit of a slug really unless it was tampered with as young blokes often do :) .

I'm surprised even peter didn't touch on the fact that just as much as these cars were very fast and young inexperienced drivers could drive them, what about our roads and the piss poor shape they were in back than. Didn't help the situation i would of thought????

Indeed , and i would go so far as to say , even some of the under powered shit box jelly suspended family hacks where more prone to bad and dangerous handling back in that era , having said that , there where a lot of boy racers back in day hurtling around suburbia in hot rod holdens and falcons and ..... valiants(chyslers to you US boys :) ), and we even had some very fast sporty 6 potters back in the day that would embarrass many a v8 owner too .

most of the cars in the day were shite, so when these came out.. wow
But he was right in what he said they were made for the race track not public roads

Was Peter’s show on TV during the turbo era of the mid-1980’s??? I’m sure he would have had a few choice things to say about the performance cars of that era.

That was because cars back then did not have crumple zones and proper safety features that we have today. Plus the roads were crap. I grew up driving in that era and the roads were a joke back then. Anyway, those cars had things like drum brakes on the rear instead of disks just for one example.

Ford and Holden and nissan and toyota still are interested in winning, what gets me is why the european cars like BMW and Mercedes are so over priced and Audi as well, think of it sure they add a little extra but no worth 3 times the highest price for a base car here in australia? WHY if they had their pricing down just right and the taxes are right then everyone cant afford them right, but nope they have to be up there over 150K just for a base model brand new, yet now a Original Low KM FORD GT is worth 4 times a new porsche ? Now you cant afford either of them a FORd GT HO or a new european sports car or family car ?
