Eclipse is an IDE, notepad is just a text editor. You need to have an IDE to develop java programs and run them. But it doesn't always have to be eclipse, there are many other alternatives like IntelliJ IDEA, Netbeans, and so on.

When I double click on eclipse showing jre or JFK is not Available. No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following location.
Linux or windows?
If windows then uninstall the jdk and jre and reinstall it.

Downloading Java EE from Oracle doesnt actually install the JDK. it just donwloads a folder called glassfish. Is that normal?
