If you clean the mouthpiece, inside and out, after every time you play, is it really necessary to clean the oxidation to extend the life of the mouthpiece? Or is that just aesthetic? Also, if the rubber is oxidized and or compressed from bite marks and being in the player’s mouth, do these techniques work there too?
Better use a vinegar bath, with cold water. Then after 10 minutes clean with cold water. Then use an oil bath, just some natural oil like olive oil. After that dry it of with a clean cloth. You will notice all oxidation is gone and the hard rubber is revitalized. Do not use sharp objects, tools, fire or sandpaper, they all remove and change the material.
