I just got the limited. I can tell you the body feels way heavier and more sturdy than the telluride. It may lack a little space and be priced higher, but any day I'd rather have the longevity and smoother ride of the highlander. I'd also rather be in one in an accident.
If Toyota matched the overall size of the highlander to that of Honda Pilot and Kia telluride, it would up their sales , most buyers have kids and want a convenient third row and cargo space .
Convenience is the main reason minivans were popular before SUVs. Now that young families are growing up, they need the same convenience in 7-8 seat SUVs. Highlander's third row is a torture to get in and out.
The Telluride is a tough car to beat, though I’m still a little more drawn to the Highlander. Especially in that white color. It looks much more elegant than the brutish Telluride. I also forgive Toyota for the $4,000 premium because of the quality of their products. And I’m not just talking about dependability (which we all know about), I mean things like paint won’t fade and trims won’t rattle. Their cars are typically cleverly engineered and easy to work on because of that. I know cars where you have to remove the air box or bumper just to change a headlight. Never in a Toyota. And the elephant in the room? We all know that the Highlander will be discounted about 1-2k haha. Either of these are good, but I prefer the Highlander over the Telluride.
Dstar5me that is true and my brother in law got the telluride and he said the first 2 months it was great but then it started having a bunch of issues and the interior was falling apart and then he switched to the 2020 Highlander platinum and he has never gone back, he said it is a bit smaller than the Kia but he said it was worth the switch, I don’t know if that’s the case with him but he said that his first experience with Kia was crap
I hate how a lot of TH-camrs and car reviewers don’t tell the whole story. How about compare reliability? Engine problems? Parts costs? Labor? Maintenance? Toyota takes the cake for that.
@@andybub45 well I happen to live there and it is 50k.Not everyone lives in the US too. What's your point? I still have to pay a deep price regardless. I can get a longer lasting proven Highlander cheaper
@ the Chrysler PT cruiser also had dealer add ons because the demand was so high. We saw how that turned out, lol. But the Telluride is amazing and I doubt it will go the same as the PT cruiser.
Great comparison, as mentioned Kia is having a very hard time keeping up with SX with Prestige package orders which I believe should drop it a point or 2 for lack of inventory.
As far as reliability, quality and customer satisfaction go, I would choose the Highlander hands down. But the Telluride is the better looking of the two.
That Toyota transmission is no longer reliable ever since they switched to the rubber band CVT transmission. The older Toyota’s though are bulletproof.
The extra leg room on the Kia third row deserves more than .5. That extra leg room is a deal maker for many customers. I don't even want to look at the Highlander when I see the tight third row.
Telluride is a great looking suv and well laid out. The GDI engine is the only thing that keeps me away. All GDI engines will give you problems with injectors + carbon deposits with relatively low mileage, and become a reoccurring issue.
Yes, you have to consider one thing on the price difference. The Telluride is somewhere between 3k to 10k above MSRP thanks to the greedy dealerships, so the Highlander wins on price.
I like the Telluride but Toyota has a great reputation for longevity and quality. Also, Toyota's historically have among the best resale value of any manufacturer. With this being the first generation of the Telluride, I think I'll wait a couple of years and see how they hold up.
What always gets left out of reviews: seating capacity options! The Telluride has an 8 seat option.. Who else can brag that? And when you're in the market to seat 8 and are looking for fuel economy and towing capabilities... Could you do a review on those options??? I truly believe the Telluride may be the vehicle for our family.. If we could get our hands on one!
Sadly you forgot to compare ownership cost (mainly maintenance and resale value). Add this to the equation and they are neck and neck. It comes down to each own preferences.
If you took away the car emblem and showed this to someone who didn't know, they would think the Kia was the Toyota. The Kia looks luxury in comparison to the Highlander.
@ ..Those badge overlays do look better on the grill, back, steering wheel and rims, 7 total. I don't understand how they can almost copy the Lexus badge. I understand why b/c it looks nicer. I'd prefer the Telluride lettering on the front hood removed, a more sporty headlight design, a power liftgate for LX ans S models and no subscription for remote start.
Drove both top trims and there was no comparison. Kia still has scratch prone plastic and uncomfortable seats. We went with the highlander, and would do it again.
@@mt2nv1 LOL! No worries. I am not offended, but just shocked that someone would compare Toyota to Subaru. I admit that Subaru is making better looking cars than what they have done in the past (and it is a HUGE improvement in the looks department) but their quality and reliability is still very far behind, and their engines are gutless. Of course, none of this is helped by the bizarre, and very common phenomenon of Subaru drivers driving around like they are completely terrified to be on the road, and are often found on the highway in the left lane with a big jam up of cars stuck behind them.
It depends what is overall more important to you. If it's value for your money, the Telluride gives you a better warranty and more features for about $4K less. If you care more about badging and reputation, then it's the Highlander.
Ray Guzman I don’t think the Toyota badge is synonymous with higher reputation or anything. Both are typically known to be cheap and reliable commuter cars. A Lexus badge is a different story
If you care about reliability so much then I would assume you would keep the car for 10-15+ years. If so, you might get an extra 2k for resale value, which doesn’t make up for the 4K extra you spent....
If Toyota add some advantages like Kia ie. leg and head room or cargo space and few more I would definitely not deny Lexus quality ride and better dynamic driving on Highlander..

The Telluride will not last as long, requires more maintenance over its life span and will resell for much less then the highlander. I think that alone is more than the $4,000 dollar price tag. Ask any mechanic!
Different strokes for different folks. Each is a fine vehicle but I prefer the simpler and (to my eye) more elegant design language of the Telluride. And while Hyundai seems to believe that faux diamond stitch leather signifies luxury, it reminds me of the sofa in my grandmother's living room in 1955.
@Daniel Hernandez Again, I'm less impressed by the Palisade's exterior design. That's mostly a matter of taste but there is one functional advantage of the Telluride (imo.) The placement of the Hyundai's headlights just above the bumper makes them especially vulnerable to flying objects (e.g. rocks and gravel) shot from vehicles ahead. That's a real issue here in the Pacific Northwest where the spring thaw in the Cascades brings many tons of rocks and gravel down from the mountains onto our highways to serve as ammunition for large trucks to shoot at vehicles behind.
My gut tells me to go with the Highlander but the Telluride is so much better looking. I would probably go with the Kia because of the price, warranty and Napa leather. Excellent video, guys. It was a pleasure to watch.
Car Confections. Love this comparison. If I may point out, One thing you forgot to mention that the Highlander has one feature not even offered in most competitors like the Koreans: an optional hybrid system. With that it absolutely destroys every one else in the fuel economy 35mpg combined
Also, it’s costs another 1500 or so, and spending 6k more on the Toyota won’t make up from gas savings.... Also now it is a 4 cylinder with much less power and a less refined engine.
Andy's coming in February. Even if it’s more expensive it’s way more efficient. It even outdoes the MDX hybrid, RX450hL, and QX60 hybrid in terms of mpg Your argument would make sense if you were comparing a Lexus gs350 to a gs450h. The price difference in that model was over $10-15K more for the hybrid.
I just bought a new 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE last night from Heritage Toyota Owings Mills in Garrison, MD. Although I did test drive it, including on the highway before purchasing, I never made it above 70 mph on the test drive. On my way home after the dealership closed, I was on the highway going over 70 mph and this hissing, whistling noise developed right from the driver's side window that was driving me crazy. It wouldn't happen if I was going below 55 and would happen intermittently when I was going between 55 and 70. I triple checked that all the windows were fully closed fully and opened and closed the doors to ensure they were completely shut but the hissing and whistling continued when I would hit 70. The only additional option I have on the car is all-weather mats, no door edge guards, and no crossbars or anything else. I love the car but hope this problem gets fixed ASAP or else it'll drive me insane. Put the volume on max, cuz the recording is from a cell phone. The TH-cam video link is below. I already took it to one dealer who were able to reproduce the whistling sound but said there was nothing they could find wrong to fix to make it better. Any suggestions on what I can do because I don't think I can go on with this problem long term. Thanks, Anan th-cam.com/video/2IAFIFh16gw/w-d-xo.html
If you want to change your car every 3-4 years sure, any brand is good. If you plan to keep it for a long Time, Toyota and Lexus are still top in polls by a long shot
The most important thing over gloss black, grill design, ventilated rear seats, and size is RELIABILITY. And Toyota has that over Kia (despite the gap decreasing recently)
Kia has made other companies like Toyota come down to earth and offer more... I’m glad I was waiting to see how the Toyota would look but Kia with the win...
The problem now is consumers don’t keep cars for 20+ years anymore. While the Highlander undoubtedly has a better engine, most owners won’t run into mechanical issues with either vehicle because they’ll dispose of it in 10 years.
I completely agree with this review after driving them. As a former mechanic/service manager (not for Hyundai/Kia), the fit/finish and build quality in drive-train and body in my opinion are equal, and there is no loyalty from manufactures, only units sold and profit. Just ask Toyota to give you a free transmission at 90,000 miles, good luck. As a person who intends to keep a vehicle longer than average, and understanding the high cost of repairs, I appreciate that Hyundai/Kia have the confidence in their track record of quality/workmanship as they have for years to continue to provide a much superior warranty on everything. In addition to the higher purchase price from Toyota, they would have to sell you an additional extended warranty for another $3-$4000 just to match the factory warranty coverage of Hyundai/Kia. Thoroughly inspect and drive them both. I made my decision on where to spend my $30-40+K.
Actually some Kia dealers are posting that Telluride at 53,000+ at their website, but when you call them they raise their prices for thousands passing 60k
Sorry, but there is no comparison in quality and resale value between a Toyota and Kia. One will likely last several hundred thousand miles and still be worth something when you try to sell it. The other just looks pretty.
Actually, you're wrong. Kias are doing really well in reliability right now. And because of how well they are selling right now, the resale value will be really good on the Kia

People keep praising the Highlander for reliability when in reality neither will be on the road 15 years later. Toyota’s 8 speed transmission has been very problematic and all the electronics in new cars are not gonna stand the test of time. Every new car has planned obsolescence built into them. Purchased a 2023 Highlander platinum… extreme luxury extremely reliable extreme resale/ trade in value!
I just got the 2020 Highlander base model, I'll come back to this comments section in 5 then 10 years and we will talk about who's car holds its value and who's car isn't breaking down....😎
I just got the limited. I can tell you the body feels way heavier and more sturdy than the telluride. It may lack a little space and be priced higher, but any day I'd rather have the longevity and smoother ride of the highlander. I'd also rather be in one in an accident.
@@kaylesbabys yup, these companies have a ways to go before they can actually compete with Toyota
Time will tell. I’m not sure the Kia won’t age as well, though I bought the highlander
@@gregruppert2555 yeah I'm almost certain the highlander will outlast it...I got 8 years warranty on mine so I'm sure of it 😅🤣😂
Telluride all day and night for me. I just wish they offered Flat bottom steering wheel.
Cant go wrong with either, but the Kia wins hands down.
I had two Highlanders 2012 and 2018, now I have a Tell and it's a great vehicle.
Highlander 100%
If Toyota matched the overall size of the highlander to that of Honda Pilot and Kia telluride, it would up their sales , most buyers have kids and want
a convenient third row and cargo space .
Convenience is the main reason minivans were popular before SUVs. Now that young families are growing up, they need the same convenience in 7-8 seat SUVs. Highlander's third row is a torture to get in and out.
The new Highlander hybrid version gets combined 36mpg. That’s a hard feature to pass up and not brought up in this vid. Maybe it wasn’t available yet.
Sub of year
Telluride is best of best
Hmmm.. we’ll see. Toyota is like grumpy old man. He’s been around along time and can tell you some stories.
Check your last image of the video. Photo and score are flipped.
I hate how a lot of TH-camrs and car reviewers don’t tell the whole story. How about compare reliability? Engine problems? Parts costs? Labor? Maintenance? Toyota takes the cake for that.
Kia Telluride Nice Car.
You can get a loaded Kia Telluride for about 37k with sunroof and 2nd row captain chairs ... I'll take Kia
Not in Canada tho Lilly. 50k easily
@@moeanthony9308 not everyone lives in Canada.
@@andybub45 well I happen to live there and it is 50k.Not everyone lives in the US too. What's your point? I still have to pay a deep price regardless. I can get a longer lasting proven Highlander cheaper
@ Every car depreciates but Korean take a harder hit. Not sure what you meant.
@ the Chrysler PT cruiser also had dealer add ons because the demand was so high. We saw how that turned out, lol. But the Telluride is amazing and I doubt it will go the same as the PT cruiser.
Excellent video. I'm going to buy the Telluride now.
Great comparison, as mentioned Kia is having a very hard time keeping up with SX with Prestige package orders which I believe should drop it a point or 2 for lack of inventory.
Another way of saying that you’re in favor of the Highlander? If inventory is short, order one.
As far as reliability, quality and customer satisfaction go, I would choose the Highlander hands down. But the Telluride is the better looking of the two.
Kias are now at Toyota reliability standards
Andy's Shop yup very close to them
Kia lmao is at Toyota's reliability

That Toyota transmission is no longer reliable ever since they switched to the rubber band CVT transmission. The older Toyota’s though are bulletproof.
The extra leg room on the Kia third row deserves more than .5. That extra leg room is a deal maker for many customers. I don't even want to look at the Highlander when I see the tight third row.
I agree!
Telluride is a great looking suv and well laid out. The GDI engine is the only thing that keeps me away. All GDI engines will give you problems with injectors + carbon deposits with relatively low mileage, and become a reoccurring issue.
@Jas S yes! But what do you think of their 8 speed transmissions? I’m driving a 5 and 6 speed with my 4 runner and tundra.
Sarah Beth Radical the Highlander can also seat 8 as long as you get one below the Platinum.
So does the highlander...
Yes but the Highlander space is way too tight. Who wants to sit in a tight space?
Toyota , all the way even on base models, having a Toyota is having a Peace of mind 👍
Best Kia
Best car comparison videos on TH-cam...!👍🏾
Thanks for that!
Drove both top trims and there was no comparison. Kia still has scratch prone plastic and uncomfortable seats. We went with the highlander, and would do it again.
I actually prefer the highlanders exterior design it a great shape, the Kia will age faster. And also like the smaller dimensions of the highlander
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHHAHAH okay bud
Toyota Highlander looks just like Subaru Ascent. Especially the front end. Kia killed it with the Telluride.
You are totally blind. The Highlander looks WAY better. Besides, Subaru sucks!
Paul 😳 sorry I offended you.
Paul you sure you’re not offended? I said the front end looks the same. You sure seem offended. 😁
@@mt2nv1 Okay, that did it. NOW I am offended! 😂
Hey AM, you are most definitely entitled to your opinion as well. Thumbs up.
The Toyota has the best reputation for longevity and reliability it also has much higher resale value because of this
Still, you just can't beat toyota for reliability. I would choose Highlander in the end. Better resale value too.
Kia reliability is now just as good as Toyota.
If you care about reliability so much then I would assume you would keep the car for 10-15+ years. If so, you might get an extra 2k for resale value, which doesn’t make up for the 4K extra you spent....
Toyota reliability is nowhere what it once was. We are a Toyota family and I personally drive a Tacoma. They’re just not the same anymore....
If Toyota add some advantages like Kia ie. leg and head room or cargo space and few more I would definitely not deny Lexus quality ride and better dynamic driving on Highlander..
First ever Triple Crown SUV of the year in history ever, Telluride is cut above Highlander as well as a class above. Highlander belongs with Sorento and not Telluride...
Howie Choi no it belongs with the telluride. They’re both large 3-row crossovers.
@@stefanb.5154 Sorento, Highlander, and Telluride are all classified as midsize SUV. Telluride is at the large end of midsize SUV scale and Sorento is at the smaller end of midsize SUV...
Howie Choi the Highlander doesn’t compete with the Sorento at all. The Highlander may be slightly smaller than the telluride but it still competes with it. Look at the price range. They’re very similar in pricing.

Highlander could get a couple more points for potential resale value over the Kia.
We dont know for sure yet the telluride is still selling over msrp and is still a hot commodity
The Telluride is going to have good resale value, look how well it sells right now
Right now Telluride SX is selling at MSRP or few thousand above MSRP. Highlander Limited and Platinum already going for 10-13% off MSRP.
Andy's Shop I don't know, I found a used 2019 Kia Sorrento on Car Guru's for a little bit over $18,000 with less than 20K miles. The Telluride might have the same story as the Sorrento, I wouldn't be surprised.
Greg Klein the telluride will have strong resale value because the demand has been crazy.
10:42 Highlander have small indoor spaces and loud noises.
11:11 Telluride looks spacious and cozy, and the passenger seat looks comfortable.
The Telluride will not last as long, requires more maintenance over its life span and will resell for much less then the highlander. I think that alone is more than the $4,000 dollar price tag. Ask any mechanic!
You are really sooooo wrong. It is 2021, wake up. Not 2004.

Toyota is now really feeling the competition. Doing double time trying to catch up, associating lexus tech. 😊
now get all of the value and an even more luxurious feeling with the Palisade...
Tyler Humpfer exactly
Just a little uglier and less presence with Palisade...
@Daniel Hernandez nah, i'd take Telluride exterior with Palisade interior
My gut tells me to go with the Highlander but the Telluride is so much better looking. I would probably go with the Kia because of the price, warranty and Napa leather. Excellent video, guys. It was a pleasure to watch.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Car Confections. Love this comparison.
If I may point out, One thing you forgot to mention that the Highlander has one feature not even offered in most competitors like the Koreans: an optional hybrid system. With that it absolutely destroys every one else in the fuel economy 35mpg combined
The hybrid isnt even out yet, and since the Telluride is gas, it competes with the gas highlander
Also, it’s costs another 1500 or so, and spending 6k more on the Toyota won’t make up from gas savings.... Also now it is a 4 cylinder with much less power and a less refined engine.
Andy's coming in February. Even if it’s more expensive it’s way more efficient. It even outdoes the MDX hybrid, RX450hL, and QX60 hybrid in terms of mpg
Your argument would make sense if you were comparing a Lexus gs350 to a gs450h. The price difference in that model was over $10-15K more for the hybrid.
Prius give 56 miles per gallon
Thanks,
Anan

Toyota was good in 1980s but this is 2020s. Other automotive company got up with them long time ago

Toyota is the number 1 brand lasting over 200k. Kia is number 16. Not saying they aren’t getting better but no where near the top
@ Based on initial perceived quality surveys covering only the first 90 days of ownership.
The most important thing over gloss black, grill design, ventilated rear seats, and size is RELIABILITY. And Toyota has that over Kia (despite the gap decreasing recently)
Reliability doesn’t matter on new cars
Kia has made other companies like Toyota come down to earth and offer more... I’m glad I was waiting to see how the Toyota would look but Kia with the win...
The problem now is consumers don’t keep cars for 20+ years anymore. While the Highlander undoubtedly has a better engine, most owners won’t run into mechanical issues with either vehicle because they’ll dispose of it in 10 years.
Toyota is still King!
Nice comparison video.
@@andybub45 please direct me to a link showing 30 years of reliability

@@homelessmillionaire1 We have owned Toyotas, Kias, Chevys, Hondas, and we have a Mazda right now. The Toyotas are reliable, theres no arguing that. But the Kias havent had any issues either. Our Honda van is a pos, the Mazda has been reliable and my personal vehicle, my 99 Tahoe, has been relatively reliable as well. In fact, the 2015 Sorento has 90k on it and no issues. People keep praising the Highlander for reliability when in reality neither will be on the road 15 years later. Toyota’s 8 speed transmission has been very problematic and all the electronics in new cars are not gonna stand the test of time. Every new car has planned obsolescence built into them. If you think a new Toyota with all its complex systems is gonna be just as reliable is the simple Toyota’s of the 90’s and early 2000’s then you’re snorting crack. No car is built to last anymore, we live in a throw away society.

one of the most important part of this comparison that you had forgotten is the name of the brand, you should give the toyota 5 point for the brand alone. and then , on top of that to start compare other features of these two vehicles.
