Sewing my FIRST QUILT with NO EXPERIENCE / How to make an easy quilt.

  • Sewing a quilt with no experience. What can go wrong? Surprisingly, nothing went wrong and considering that there's hand quilting, patchwork, bias binding involved, I am surprised myself.
    This could also be classed as a tutorial as I give you all of the steps you need in order to make your own easy quilt!
    For my daughter's first birthday I wanted to gift her a quilt. Something that she could use and she could hold on to for as long as she wants to. In my mind I see this quilt being passed down to her children, but I don't know if that's wishful thinking.
    For this quilt I didn't pick a pattern I chose what my heart loved and went for it.
    I had so much fun sewing the pieces together, then sewing the rows together and then my favourite part hand stitching the quilt together. Such a therapy, better than many things on this earth.
    I finished the quilt with bias binding and wow! I am in love.
    This baby quilt is beyond what I expected it to be. It has come out so, so well and I am in love. This handmade quilt that I have sewn is not perfect in any way but it is beautifully imperfect and carefully handmade.

    What an adorable video. You are so much braver than I was when I made my first quilt at age 75 (after watching about a million videos)! I hope you have tried it since this post! I also sewed for a long time then thought I would try quilting. So much of success is how complicated of a design you choose. I was intimidated by all the quilting books, videos and equipment, but it's not necessary to make a beautiful one of a kind quilt that will be appreciated.

I have been self teaching myself to quilt with the help of TH-cam and just as you explained on one of your more recent videos, it is my hidden spot where I can sit with myself and my thoughts. This video made me cry and have so much joy in my heart. I've never made a quilt before. I've never even used a sewing machine and I feel very intimated, but I love that you went based off intuition and your heart's design. That is exactly what I am doing as well. I got a sewing machine for a gift and my first project is a quilt. My husband amd I want to buy our first home, because we've been living full-time in an RV with our 3 children for several years, and this quilt will be for our new home. We are trying to buy a house now and I am praying and putting lots of love into this quilt so it will be made special for when we finally have a home ❤

    I am so inspired. Like you I made my first (in my case only) quilt for my then unborn baby. It is a small one. I used it for him in his bassinet and then to shade him in his capsule in the car. I did not hand stitch it and I used a ribbon to bind it, not perfect but it has lasted for over 30 years so far. I want to do make another quilt now, hand stitching as you have done. ❤

    Love the soft colors you used and the coordinating gingham backing. Thank you for your inspiring, encouraging words. Please be sure and attach a label to the back"Handmade by Alexandra" and the date you finished it. I recently finished a quilt made from thrifted plaid flannel shirts with black flannel sashing between the blocks. It turned out amazing. I also quilted it by hand. It fits a regular full sized bed, so it took forever to hand quilt. But it was sooo satisfying. I also love the hand quilted look. Brava to you for overcoming your trepidation and just doing it!

    What a great quilt! :) And I just love the idea about you praying while doing the last row of hand stitching! A couple of years ago my son asked me if magic (like real Harry Potter-like magic) exists. And at that time, I was doing cross stitched labels for all his school stuff, and I thought what is everyday magic, if not this?! Thinking of your child while doing something by hand for them?! Literarily anything: wholesome food, a quilt, some toys, etc. Huge appreciation for your great work and mom-magic! :)

    this is the cutest, most beautiful, most wholesome video on all of youtube. I love the way you put yourself into this world. you seed such goodness into the world, and I know I don't know you in real life but you take every opportunity to make others feel seen and loved and safe. you are such a natural mother. i've learned about witches recently and I love them and I feel that you are a natural born witch and I mean that in the best way. the way you sewed a prayer into the blanket, your magic is the honesty that you show up to a place like the internet with. i am so stoned. i love you. also, babe, i love the editorialized shots at the end so hot so hot but i so do want the footage of you just proudly showing off your quilt behind the camera, you know? full mom energy? okay. love ya.

      This is such a fun and interesting little comment at the same time! Thank you - I filmed this over a year ago! Loved making this quilt, we treasure it so much, my daughter and I and the prayers were for blessing and protection. Me speaking to the Lord about the deepest wishes and desires for my child. I'd call myself a loving mama and definitely not a witch. It might be that we have very different understandings of witches haha! X So glad you enjoyed it.

    This was so lovely to watch! I love how meaningful quilts can be, not just for it's use but the journey to get there.
    Would definitely recommend next time using a longer quilting needle or sashiko needle for the hand stitching, they're a lot longer than regular hand sewing needles so you can do a lot more stitches in one go. Definitely speeds up the process!

    I also made my first quilt this year. I used a bunch of beautiful cotton shirts my husband didn’t want anymore. Cutting them took a few days. I tried to make as much use of each section of the shirt so all my “squares” were of all sizes. I don’t think there is a single square in the whole quilt. I hand stitched every single bit of the quilt, which is big enough to cover a California King size bed. I used a very light interfacing on both the top and the bottom of the quilt so that the batting would stay in place while I am hand quilting. Ironing that whole thing took me an entire week alone. I did not use a bias tape for the edges, I actually folded the bottom fabric over the top and hand stitched it all around the edges making a frame around the quilt top. The batting I used is 100% wool and extremely fragile so my quilting will need to be at most two inches between the stitch lines. Thankfully the interfacing is keeping it all in place for me otherwise it will all bunch up. Although I still have to work on the hand quilting on this giant quilt, I decided to make a queen sized one followed by a slightly smaller one. All hand sewn as well. I am also planning on making a quilt that will be more like an art piece, but still functional. For that I will be using only white fabric, all collected from local thrift stores. I found a huge duvet cover “Egyptian cotton” for $12 and a few other bed sheets as well as some vintage white table cloths which I will be manipulating and creating all kind of sculptural shapes then I will be hand stitching and embroidering to create all kinds of textures. By the way, the sashiko thread should be kept as it comes, don’t wind it into a ball. Keep the knot at the top and cut the entire thread skein opposite of where the knot is. This gives you exactly the length of thread you need to sew with. There is a sashiko needle that is very sharp and has a big eye. I have that exact thread as well. When you hand stitch always listen to your thread. If for some reason it makes too much noise you need a thicker needle. This helps to keep the thread from fraying and breaking. I highly recommend Aurifil 12 wt thread for big stitch quilting. It is very expensive, but it is the best thing I have ever seen. I noticed your stitch lines in your quilt were very far apart. I don’t know what kind of batting your used, but the packaging should tell you the recommended distance between the stitch lines, otherwise over time the batting will not withstand washing and everyday use. Okay, now I’m going to check out all your other videos. I just discovered you today. Yay! ❤

      @AlexandraBurnett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! What a great comment! Your work sounds beautiful! Thank you for all the tips! The first time I tried to keep the sashiko thread as it was it got tangled and I almost cried! Yes, I do think the stitches are far apart and will change that for the next time! Fascinating about listening to the thread noise! Never heard that! Wild! Thank you so much!!!! For watching, being here and leaving this beautiful comment! X

    Hello! I came across your videos this morning as I was looking for some sewing inspiration. I started sewing when I was 15 years old and used to have my own small business selling handmade purses as a teen. Fast forward to now, I am 40 years old and have five children . I only see now to fix things or put patches on my husbands jujitsu gi (which I hate doing because it is so bulky!) I felt sad because I was not enjoying taking my sewing machine out anymore. But, after watching a handful of your videos today, I am more excited than ever to start sewing again. I want to start sewing clothing, and definitely try quilting. Also, I love your personality! You are so funny and sweet. Definitely subscribing! Blessings!🤍

    I am so excited to try to make one of these for my new apartment!!! I have a couple questions though…
    1. when sewing all the pieces and rows together, did you stitch back and forth to secure it like you would for a garment, or did you just start sewing and go all the way down the piece?
    2. how many different kinds of fabric did you get and how much of each?
    3. what videos did you watch to learn how to do the bias binding?

    • @AlexandraBurnett
      @AlexandraBurnett  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was such a fun project! All the best with yours!
      1. Yes to backstitching.
      2. I don't know, I bought lots of cute fabric from Etsy and hoped for the best.
      3. Lots of videos show this method, I can't remember which one I looked up, but it was an older lady explaining it. I did this almost two years ago! X
