I remember jumping on my parents bed to this song in the 80s. Carefree and happy. When I hear this song now , I'm instantly transported back for a few minutes. Warm summer afternoon, windows open. Fans running. Just joy and youth. Love this song.
Takes me right back to summer holidays 1984. With its steeldrum-like summery sound I thought of it as that year's Dreadlock Holiday in a more synthesised, not as lyrically engaging way.
This song and video as a child inspired me. A white English Girl from a low income family with an Indian Uncle from Kenya and racist Grandmother. The video and song made me want to make friends around the world. Now 48, I have travelled the world on oil industry ships and met hundreds of people from all over from Greenland to New Zealand and married an amazing human from the country they tried to make us hate in the 80's ( Russia/Ukraine/Soviet Union). Thank you Howard for inspiring me to see beyond the surface into the soul.
This song in "better off dead" and the Camaro scene which I saw on telly in my childhood are the reasons why I became a mechanic! You talk about 80s music you talk about Howard Jones. This is and will always be one of the most important parts of my life. Thank you for the best music we had in the 80s Howard!
I know every generation says same, but I feel so lucky to have had my music decade as the 80s. I was 14. The charts meant a lot. Every week there would be 10 Singles as amazing as this. What a fantastic tune. Utterly timeless.
My childhood 1968-1986 sounded so magical, culminating in Howard Jones and his contemporaries. People roll their eyes, but true music genius has been ten times as rare ever since. Boomers disagree, GenX and beyond disagree, but I consider myself on the cusp of 2 generations, raised with Boomers for siblings and schooled with GenX. Right here in the middle was the Golden Age to me. And it was an honor and a pleasure to be raised by the Greatest Generation.
Perhaps a bit underrated, but I liked a lot of his songs. And Tina Turner appears to have appreciated him. If I remember correctly, she did a concert once with Howard Jones on the synthesizer and Phil Collins on drums. I really liked that.
2024. I was lucky enough to grow up listening to the 60’s 70’s 80’s music. What a great smorgasbord of music we had back then. You could actually sing along and they just had a way of getting stuck in your head. Good times.
All of HoJo's music is kind, exciting and positive. What a visionary. In the 1980's he inspired my musical enjoyment which has continued for a lifetime.
What a great time to be growing up. Didnt know and appreciate it fully at the time, enjoyed it, but look back on the 80's to about mid 90's as being the best time to be alive and enjoy life. After that, it slowly went to total shit. And here we are in 2022.
Howard is a genius, to write music like this that some 40 years after it's release still stirs up emotions of nostalgia/euphoria/emotion all at the same time is mind blowing. An original pioneer and master of his craft. Howard thanks for a lifetime of magic.
The middle 8 starting at 1:45 is utterly euphoric! 😍 it makes me feel so happy that I was alive when this music was being made but kinda sad that I can’t go back every once in a while! Howard Jones was one of the many people that made me want to be a musician and luckily I got to be one 😎❤️

Like to get to know you well
Like to get to know you well

Repeat Chorus
Together we can cast away the fear
Together we can wipe away the tear
Together we can strip down the barriers
And be one
Don't wanna talk about the weather
Don't wanna talk about the news
Just wanna get to the real you inside
Repeat Chorus
Don't you think now is the time
We should be feelin'
Just wanna simply say
Won't let you slip away
People wanna talk about the future
Don't wanna linger on the past
Just wanna reach to the real you inside
Forget cold glances and rejections
Leave the things that separate
Build on a trust that we can stand on
Repeat Chorus
Finding all are insecure
Opening the same door
Leaving out a stubborn pride
Seeing from another side
Repeat Chorus
