He was so flat at the beginning. A trigger mechanism is worse than pointless in that situation. Also the little extras didn’t really work. I’d guess either the first solo; or the last after a very heavy concert.
After listening to the quality of band accompanying I would suggest it was the wild intonation from the band that made it seem like Dr Thornton was out of tune when in fact he’s one of the best euphonium players of his generation so intonation isn’t something he has a problem with
@@TheKatWeasel don’t dispute his quality - his record speaks for itself, but he was extraordinarily flat at the beginning which indicates a cold instrument to me.
This is a very beautiful interpretation that stresses melody over acrobatics. Bravo!!!!
