    What was your favorite part of this book?

      I didn’t like this book but I loved the chapter with the misty ships

      An odd choice maybe, but for me it was Canning advocating the resurrection of Pitt. Laugh out loud hilarious. But it was all so, so, SO good!

    • @PonderingsOfPete
      @PonderingsOfPete  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philipmarsh2172 I completely missed that 🤣
      I know a little bit more about Pitt and him fitting into history now, so that’s funnier than it would’ve been when I read it.

      @@PonderingsOfPete I know a tiny little bit about the period and knowing Canning was such a Pitt fanboy means OF COURSE he would want to bring him back from the dead, with the prospect of zombie Pitt shambling round Westminster

    When i think about great endings whether its show, movie, anime, or book. I always come back to this. One of my favorite books/universes and one of the all time greatest endings. Those last few sentences. The beauty, tragedy, scope, mystery and excitement of it. The best.

    Most fantasy books will never be considered classics outside of their genre. This book will probably escape.

    Hello. First comment here. This was a great review. JS&MN is one of my most favorite fantasy books of all time. I have searched a lot for a book which evokes the same sentiment and have found nothing really (perhaps Gormenghast but that is unique in a different way). A true modern classic and you discussed it beautifully.

    • @PonderingsOfPete
      @PonderingsOfPete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I really love this book. But if there were others, it wouldn’t stand to be such a classic, would it?
      A similar, but altogether different book I think would be the Magicians by Lev Grossman. It definitely reads more modern, but the bones feel right enough to call the two brothers.

    • @Paromita_M
      @Paromita_M 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree! The Magicians trilogy is another favorite (though perhaps not at the level of JS&MN) and I am actually rereading it now! Part of me just wishes for the sequel with Childermass and Vinculus at times but of course the author's wellbeing takes priority.

      @@Paromita_M i also wish for the sequel. But you are correct. Susanna Clarke’s health comes first.

      Thanks! Yeah, there are a lot of different eras in English History but you could break them down into a smaller number of categories more easily. I doubt the average person understand when the “Regency Era” was, simply because I had to look it up lol

    I'm rereading this now so watched this again. Childermass is my favourite character. The liveshow was really fun to watch.🙂

    Also I've returned to IJ. Third time's the charm, right? 😔

    • @PonderingsOfPete
      @PonderingsOfPete  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chiller mass is 100% why I want a sequel. I need more of him and his backstory and the whole reading the book thing.
      Loved the footnotes, especially all the stories and such because of the depth they give the world.
      Third time is indeed the charm. How far did you get last time?

    • @Paromita_M
      @Paromita_M 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PonderingsOfPete Last time I got to the end of the chapter with Hal and the conversation therapist.
      Third time was not the charm. I failed again and I'm sad (even got a reader's guide and everything) 😥 I usually have no problem DNF'ing but I don't dislike this book, it just keeps eluding me though I'm intrigued by it and DFW's thought process. 😔

    • @PonderingsOfPete
      @PonderingsOfPete  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Paromita_M I completely understand. I have to take it in chunks and instead of rereading the things you've gotten through, have you tried starting where you left off?

    • @Paromita_M
      @Paromita_M 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PonderingsOfPete No I start with Hal and the college panel every time because I've read that it's circular and the first chapter is really important.
      The main reason why I want to complete this book is DFW made some eerie predictions about the state of entertainment etc in the future along with the frighteningly real portrayal of depression and addiction. Now that we know what happened to DFW (NB this is no apologia for his treatment of certain people in his life, I am just able to separate the art from the artist in this case), I want to read this and his unfinished work The Pale King to get a better understanding of his thoughts on entertainment vs banality in daily life. I don't think he is just showing off (which many critics say) or copying Pynchon, I think there is a meaningful message here (for me at least) but it's getting lost in his stylistic choices as an author.
      TL;DR: There is something about this book which makes me keep coming back to it despite my struggles to read through. It's like The Magicians - the book was by no means an all-time favourite when I read it. However, it has always stuck with me as an intelligent and honest book. I think if I finish IJ, it will be like that for me.
      (So sorry for the ramble, you're probably used to this by now)

    • @PonderingsOfPete
      @PonderingsOfPete  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Paromita_M always happy to read a ramble, for certain
      The thoughts on depression and addiction really resonate from IJ. And his predictions for the world of entertainment are so interesting to read about, so I completely understand. Other than his suicide and personal struggle with addiction, I don’t know all that much about his life, so am approaching it relatively clean in terms of seeing the author influence
