Not knowing what to compare too didn't matter at the time. I have the fondest memories of Crysis 2 on the Xbox 360. I played that game a ton. It had great multiplayer. I also played parts in 3D when that was a thing that generation haha
same, but I did essentially play it like a stealth game. I had friends who played it said it felt slow compared to COD (they levelled similar complaints against halo), which I guess is layman version of "its not a stable fps"
New one is more Grey but old one looks straight out of 2010. Grey looks more realistic but old color style is the original feeling and personality of the game
Yeah I like the contrast of the original version. SVOGI is great and it makes everything more realistic but it also makes the game look a bit too bright overall imo.
Still on PS3 I highly enjoyed the game. I don't know why, im 29 now so I was younger then? Or was before I built my PC and now am spoiled with insane fps.
@@TheloniusFabdul yeah same here, PS3 was so amazing and was the starting years of me smoking. COD, BF, GOW, etc were so epic esp with the PS2 to PS3 jump on graphics
You developed your tech eye in 10 years lol. I wasnt as keen on frame rate drops 10 years ago as I am now either. I do remember playing games and looking back now it was obviously the frame rate dropping terribly low but back then I perceived it as the game being in slow motion or stuttering but it didnt bother me as much at 11-13 old years old as it would now. Looking back at the PS3 footage now I cant believe I even played Crysis 2 and 3 on console back then with such horrible frame rate. The ignorance was surely bliss back then lol.
Happy that Crytek are having a win here. It's funny, When I first played Crysis 2 (on a beastly PC for the time) I thought it was far less impressive than the original. After playing thru all 3 titles now about 3 times each over the years I'd say that Crysis 2 is actually my favourite.
I loved Crysis 1 for it's sandbox and openness I loved Crysis 2 for it's well constructed level design, much improved gunplay, and the story while over the top was great Crysis 3 felt like an excellent refinement from 2 and brought back some of the openness of the original in a couple of levels I enjoyed all of the games personally

I actually prefer the color grading, look and intense depth of field present in the original crysis 2. It just looks very cinematic and it reminds of a cooler time in the game and film industry.
Absolutely, 100% agree on this. I prefer the original. I may actually turn down some of the tones on my TV so I can experience this a little bit more. Specially since HDR doesn’t work very well right now.

@@iamarabicandiloveamericanp7137 people can generally feel a bit motion sick when met with 30fps gameplay after growing accustomed to something smoother. No doctors needed
First two crysis were really playable at low framerate. I remember playing C1 on my 8800Ultra and I was perfectly happy with 30fps in this game. In 2012 I had GTX680, so Crysis 2 was running at 60fps maxed out on my PC, but I have also played x360 version few years later and I had no problems completing the whole game. IDK why, but some x360 games are more responsive at 20-25fps than locked 30fps games on PS4/xbox one. For example GTA5, x360 version runs at only 22-26fps, but I could aim without problems, while on PS4 I had to use aim assists, because inputlag was so much higher (and PS4 version was running at locked 30fps!!). IMO in PS1-3 era games were really playable at 20-30fps, but since PS4 era 30fps feels way more laggy and I no longer can enjoy playing at 30fps.
It's kind of insane how I played this game on Xbox 360 and thought it was perfectly fine - in fact one of my favorite games ever on that platform. I literally could not comprehend the frame drops at that point, I had no idea what any of that even meant lol Absolutely wild
I still think x360 version was really good considering 2005 era hardware. Crysis 2 was one of the best looking games on x360 and aiming was still responsive even at 20-25fps.
@Lov Mir I dont remember any performance problems in Crysis 2 on PC during launch. My Q6600 + 8800Ultra (GPU from 2007) was averaging around 40fps (30-50fps) at 1080p high settings, and on faster CPU I'm sure even 60fps was achievable on something like 720p. That's a far cry from xbox 15-30fps framerate. But xbox launched in 2005 and not to mention it was 4x cheaper than my 2007 PC, so I try to look at x360 ports from realistic perspective. Xbox 360 port looked really impressive considering x360 hardware limitations, especially 512MB RAM in totall (for comparison my GPU alone had 768MB just for textures and I also had 4GB system RAM on top of that). Framerate could be better on xbox, but I could still enjoy playing this game and for 99% of time I had no problems with aiming.
Yeah I think saying it was “never really playable” is super dramatic. I beat the game on Supersoldier, played it through twice, and got up to level 36/50 in multiplayer, and I never felt like the game was unplayable. It’s clearly better on PC and next gen systems but it wasn’t really that bad
@Lov Mir If you turn the settings down to a comparable level then a console-comparable GPU like the 7800 GT(X) CAN run those games. but of course by 2011 nobody on PC was playing at 720p. We were playing at 1280*1024 in 2005, before the 1280*720 console generation even began!!! That's why in practice nobody ended up using a 2005 GPU to run Crysis 2. Not because it couldn't be done.
I'm really looking forward to playing these tomorrow. I played them on the 360 back in the day so it'll be nice to experience it the way it was meant to be. That said I would really like to see what critics could do if they were developing exclusively for the next Gen. Systems and could take advantage of all the features and not have to worry about any kind of scaling down for the older platforms.
I have a question for you.. if you don't mind answering that is- Did you ever experience any issues while playing Crysis 2 and 3 on the 360? I played them both first on the 360 before a (at the time) beefy as Hell PC running@1080p max settings. I don't remember having frame rate issues like they're reporting here especially not so much that it was unplayable. I remember being in total awe at how insane it looked at the time...like an impossible feat was being performed before me and it blew me away. At any rate, I just picked this up for my Series X and I am installing it right now. I can't wait to see all 3 running in 4K even if its variable. I'm off work, don't have anywhere to be, my fiancee is a gamer as well, I juat bought Scarlett Nexus for her for our PS5...it's freaking Crysis time! You have a great weekend my friend and I hope you enjoy playing the Hell out of Crysis just like me. ;)
Sometimes less-realistic graphics are somehow more believable than the super ultra hi res stuff we have now. Something about how your mind fills in the blanks makes things feel more real than leaving no room for imagination. This still looks amazing, I’m just noticing how I somehow like the look of some of the older gen clips a bit more in terms of art style.
I agree wholeheartedly.. something about the "high resolution" games that we get nowadays, is sometimes too crisp, and it leaves nothing to the imagination. I think some of it is also because we are in this uncanny valley, where the texture and resolution is very high, but the polycount and clutter count is still relatively low, which create discrepancy. This will be addressed in the future games I think, especially looking at UE5 nanite.
I agree. Lighting is not just used for technicality, there’s mood and emotion involved. Having more realistic lighting doesn’t necessarily translate to a better experience. All the remasters I’ve see tempered with the original artistic vision: from this to the Batman Arkhams to the Assassin’s Creeds to the Mass Effects, none of them were done as well as the originals. It would be interesting if Digital Foundry hired an artist/illustrator when making these comparisons to have another layer of depth and perspective. Analyzing something artistically is completely different from the technical jargon used here.
@@arioca Absolutely. All they care about is how many lines of resolution ray tracing has... It has nothing to do with how good something looks or how it feels to play.
@@LeesChannel no I am not, crysis 1 was a cool sandbox-like game but it had virtually no story and it really didn't have much to offer after you've played it a couple times over especially since half of the game isn't even sandboxy. Crysis 3 had a good balance of sandbox and linearity and it had a good story, but it was too short although had great replay value and the gameplay way very fun. Now crysis 2 had an awesome decent sized story, great levels with replayability, very fun and enjoyable gameplay but it was missing the sandbox theme which arguably it replaced with the various ways you can replay every single section of every level in the game. So yes technically speaking crysis 2 is the best, now you may have bias towards the others but a bias isn't an objective fact.

@@forasago This is exactly what I think. They took an old game and made it a little less old, but certainly not new. A AA game like A plague Tale: Innocence or Kena: Bridge of the Spirits have better lights and environments. I'm still impressed with how good the PS3/X360 version looked, I remember when I was playing it back on 360 when it came out and blown away with the graphics and the framerate wasn't really something I noticed back then.
I like Crytek's use of svogi here for more natural lighting but the darker areas of the game are way too much bright now. It'd be neat to see Crysis 4's levels being built with svogi beforehand.
@@forasago The whole point of SVOGI is its scalability. You can have it be high quality through console commands and still not need ray-tracing to look and perform well. Trying to rely more on a demanding version for very minimal differences is not efficient.

Digital Foundry isn't the owner of the truth of how well something plays or looks. If people played Bayonetta or Crysis 2 at 30 fps on the PS3, had fun and enjoyed the graphics, that's all that matters. It doesn't mean that it's not a good game on that platform or it's unplayable. Digital Foundry has free access to all the latest tech, often takes them for granted, and loves to promote everything that's latest as the greatest and the only or ultimate way to play something. I wonder if their Achievements and Trophies profiles are open to the public to see how much they actually played the games they compare since they're also criticizing AI and gameplay besides graphics.
Thanks for the video and good to know that there is a HDR prob in this game. If there comes a fix out in the next weeks, will you do a second review video of the game to see the different and how it works then? That would be great.
It's crazy for anyone that remembers Microsoft from the 90s, that they're so pro consumer now compared to their rivals, and are even beginning to embrace Right to Repair. If there are no pixel-counts, it's a win for PS5. You can be rest assured that is the better version. If the Xbox-version wins, they scream it of the rooftops. Thats how you know which version to get.
He did mention that Series X looks clearer, but they all use DRS, so don't expect 4K all the time on ANY console. I'd recommend PS5 due to the Dualsense since IQ seems identical across the board.
Series S REALLY needs a high fps/lower res and a high res/lower fps option as standard in every game. I understand that a majority of subscribers on this channel could prefer higher fps but I know so many people that would ALWAYS prefer a crisper/prettier game at a stable 30 over anything else.
Below 1080p is kinda a no go for me. On a 4k TV that's just a blurfest. On a 1080p display you can get away with it though. So imo devs should aim for: 1080p being the minimum at 60fps Or 1440p being the minimum at 30fps If either of these can't be reached at least put a mode in for the other.

I loved Crysis 1 for it's sandbox and openness
I loved Crysis 2 for it's well constructed level design, much improved gunplay, and the story while over the top was great
Crysis 3 felt like an excellent refinement from 2 and brought back some of the openness of the original in a couple of levels

When i was 11 i played this game on PS3 and loved it, i didn't know what fps were, now seeing this video i am shocked on how bad the performance was.
I literally could not comprehend the frame drops at that point, I had no idea what any of that even meant lol

I still think x360 version was really good considering 2005 era hardware. Crysis 2 was one of the best looking games on x360 and aiming was still responsive even at 20-25fps.
Agreed, I played this game to death. An amazing 360 game
@Lov Mir Any trash-tier toaster crushed Crysis 2 at launch - it wasn't a good looking game
@@sololoquy3783 Totally... PS3 version looked so much better. More "organic". Not it looks very "plasticky".

Same here. Its funny how people way have different experiences. I was happy af to have any video games to play, so xbox 360 was amazing to me. Then u got these high and mighties pooping all over it lol
Glad you did not ignore the pro and the one x
I pray that Crytek brings Warhead with a remaster, best game in the series with the original even following, closely, behind. :)
Me too, but they can't. If I remember correctly they admitted in an interview that they lost the source code
@@xFabi99 That's a shame if it's true. Warhead is just a much better game all around.
@@judgejudys3xdungeon94 I know right! so sad...
Warhead has bad ass level design and pacing. A shame lots of people haven't enjoyed it.
Really happy to see this. I'll be picking this up for sure.
Still blows my mind they haven't done a Psychonauts 2 video.
Well that 💵 didn't arrive 🤷🏽♂️ to DF.
Like he said they didn't recieve their bribe mohney
Ohh John is doing the video so we know it won't be a fair comparison
I loved Crysis 2 and never had a problem with it on Xbox 360.
Back when people were playing games not counting frames
@@eljusticiero322 I didn't even know what FPS was back then lol
@@eljusticiero322 I think it's great that people are asking for 60fps or at the very least stable 30fps. I started to notice that PS3 performance caused me headaches at the end of generation.
I forgot how popular that blue tint look was back in the early 2010s
Crysis 2, you mean the CoD clone that has nothing to do with Crysis, ditched the unique alien design for generic robots, the iconic jungle for boring New York and the iconic Nomad... for random soldier #23 and the awesome wide linear level design with tons of destructible elements for a bunch of corridors and almost no destruction? Ah, I remember. What a classic. /s
1:49 The XBox One version crashed so hard it threw up a PlayStation error screen.
Can't wait to replay on ps5.
Thanks all involved.
Used to be a console guy. Crysis 2 on Xbox 360 was one of my favorite games of that console gen. I don't remember any notable performance issues, but I've always been less bothered by low frame rates than many or maybe most other people. The textures and lighting were incredible for the time. Musis remains one of the best soundtracks in a game to me.
Can't wait to get this for the Switch.
You want your switch to light on fire 😂
@@joiion913
Ugghh, what 🤦♂️
@@joiion913
I mean, it's already on the platform, I'm still going through the first one myself on the system..
It's pretty good..
I had no idea about gaming rigs when I had this on 360, and I had a helluva time! Cloak engaged!
I played this on my PS3 back in the day, I loved it, and never really realized the bad performance. Guess it was something I was used to
DF I love you man! Perfect timing.
Really happy Alex came around to the level design of crysis 2. My favorite in the series since it was the most fun to me although I know it gets a lot of flak for its console "pandering" great video as always and love the upgrade
60fps for a 10 year old game is AMAZING !!! -WOW im without words...
Loser begging for meaningless attention from strangers WOW your life 👏
I prefer the green tint on the original’s visuals, mainly in the city environs - looks more artful and distinctive
No pixel counts on the PS5 nor Series X? How do I know which machine to buy this for? :(
If there are no pixel-counts, it's a win for PS5.
You can be rest assured that is the better version.
If the Xbox-version wins, they scream it of the rooftops.
Thats how you know which version to get.
@@Countless_Relics true
He did mention that Series X looks clearer, but they all use DRS, so don't expect 4K all the time on ANY console. I'd recommend PS5 due to the Dualsense since IQ seems identical across the board.
@@RandomGamingMoments925 Its not a PS5 native app so items like adjustable triggers won't be active.
Xbox has more tera flops (system power) while the ps5 10 so xbox will run most of the games at higher resolution targeting 4K
DF crysis video!!?, today is special..
So imo devs should aim for:
1080p being the minimum at 60fps
Or 1440p being the minimum at 30fps
If either of these can't be reached at least put a mode in for the other.
Nice work Crytek
Definitely looking forward to playing this again on PC, really glad to see it running so well on PS5 and Series X. FPS games really do benefit so much from 60 FPS.
I literally cannot wait to replay those games. Just waiting for my Steam Deck to arrive
I fuckin loved Crysis 2 even on the PS3 lol It was pretty rough tho yea
Voxel Cone Tracing + Screen Space Global Ilumination, very good next gen GI.
Damn you can hear the pain in Alex's voice when talking about the PS3 and Xbox 360 ports. It's sad but also hilarious.
i remember that k- volt shit was so op that you can kill aliens so damn fast but it also kill you fast because it drain suit energy so fast, man i really miss these type of games now a days :( when the pc version is coming
