Funny story, ever wondered why still has the shorter, less powerful 120 mm L44 main gun on the Abrams instead of the more modern L55? It's because of exactly this reason. When the US adopted the Rheinmetall 120 mm L44 they thought it was too complex and replaced the hydraulic recoil mechanism with what is essentially a large steel spring on the M256. When Rheinmetall then developed the longer, more powerful L55 gun they designed it in such a way that it could be dropped into tanks already fitted with the L44, same center of mass and all. The modified M256 had a different center of mass. When the US then trialed the L55 designated M256E1 they found the stabiliser on the Abrams couldn't handle the higher weight and center of mass, requiring a complete redesign of the stabiliser, which congress deemed too expensive. And that's how the Abrams still has a 80s gun. The Germans are currently on the L55 from the 90s, and currently introducing the higher pressure L55A1 from the late 2010s. They are essentially two m,ain gun generations ahead because the US thought a hydraulic recoil system is too complex. Way to handycap yourself. Since then Abrams fanboys have made up dozens of theories to justify it. Ranging from "DU ammo makes up for it" (it doesen't) to "shorter L44 barrel is better in urban combat" (well yes, there however also is a higher pressure L44A1). In reality congress was just stingy.

But the PZH2000 had just one loss in the entire war. It is pretty hard to kill with counter battery fire or drones due to its armor. The lifetime of the barrels exceeded the expectaions my a magnitude. Main limitation is it weigth and maintenance needs. The later wouldn't be so much of an issue with NATO. Problem here is that ukraines capabilties in field maintancen are far below NATO standards and that is something noone thought of during design of this weapon system. Of course there are systems that do the job for less money, but these all lack protection and are vulnerable. So when you hit the thickest artillery combat in mobile defensive or offensive operations the PZH2000 is the system to have. But it is far to heavy, expensive and maintenance intensive for beeing the overall solution over a 1000km front. There is no weapon system that can do everything. But in the purpose the PZH2000 was designed for it excels.

Well, the autoloader tended to overheat, but mostly due to the Ukrainian Crews really using the artillery. They handled more fire requests per gun and day than the Germans expected. Also, insufficient crew training made some things worse, but now, the Ukrainian soldiers likely know the PzH-2000 better than most German soldiers.

This is a bit speculation but i would guess that the Pzh2000s maintenance effort is also caused by the fact that it survives. A M777 howitzer doesnt need any maintenance if it gets hit by counter artillery fire after having shot 200 rounds.

Yeah, that Säbel's series is very interesting to watch. The part about the autoloader kinda opened my eyes - they went for this design because it can be faster as only one round is in motion instead of the whole drum or belt/chain. While i still think that it's possible to design a simpler system, even when sticking to this principle, I now at least know why they did it that way.
it's not over-engineered if you train bright European conscripts or well educated contract soldiers on it and have good maintenance crews within reach. maybe it's 'over-engineered' for your average US soldier. look at the M109 and see what the US military deems 'easy enough' for their soldiers to handle.

You forgot about the Computer assisted targeting system. It’s able to fire automatically 5 rounds in chain to hit one or more targets within a few seconds difference. The system calculates the angle of shooting so good that they fire 5 rounds and all 5 rounds hit within a few seconds, so the target(s) have no time to react. And like the others said, if the Autoloader is not working because of a lack of maintenance or damage you can still reload the old fashion way. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
you forgot the best thing about it, it can fire 5 rounds in a special fire mode, so all 5 are hitting the target area at the exactly same time, while the PzH has already moved away. This Artillery was designed especially for that, it was a huge success to make that work.
There are at least three main reasons for the Zweitausend's low losses, and two of them are its disadvantages, so I wouldn't use Ukraine as an example:)
The successor is fully automated and needs two people only and nobody needs to leave the vehicle for shooting. It can also shoot while driving and the computer will crack the shot when the barrel is on the target only. Needs much less fuel too.

Overengineered? Only if what it was designed for could have been achieved with a lesser technological solution. That is however not the case here. In this case every part of the solution was technically necessary. So not over engineered per se; just to the specifications required.

It was designed in the late stages of the Cold War to survive enormes potential Soviet counter battery fire. To do that, the Germans wanted a howitzer that could fire 10 rounds really fast and get out of its position even faster. It was not designed for staying stationary and fire all day round.

The PzH2000 is the best SP howitzer in the world. It's reliable and not over engineered. It's far better than the American M-109A6 Paladin, the Britisch AS-90 or the French Ceasar howitzers.
The successor is already engineered. It has the same gun but needs only two people, is fully automated, can shoot while driving and still hit because the shot is cracked when the computer has the barrel on target. And the chassis is on wheels what needs much less fuel.

But it is no longer state of the art, that is now the RCH-155. The first self-propelled howitzer that can fire accurately while moving and only needs a 2-man crew and can also travel long distances without a transporter (railway / low loader).
God, that thing… The RCH 155 is overhyped, and that's its main "feature". Firing on the move decreases accuracy compared to firing while stationary while providing no real benefits. Yet another example of "German (over)engineering".

@@schuckycheems ah. well a friend of mine serves on a PzH2000 in the Bundeswehr. he voiced no complaints so far, on the contrary, with the 5 man crew, maintenance is quite easy. Ukraine struggled, due to lack of maintenance schooling (due to sped up training) and having to conduct life video calls with the german maintenance crews, to fix minor issues of the system, that would be fixed on the routine daily service of trained crews.
PzH-2000 is the fastest artillery system in the world with 10 Rounds per minute aside from the SK K9-Thunder which can do 6 rounds per minute. Is it Over-Engineered? It certainly is but is it the most complicated and the most sophisticated Artillery System in the world? No, that one belongs to the K9-Thunder with its K9A2 Variant which is completely autonomous and only requires 2 personnel on-board being the Driver and the Gunner/Commander and also can do 10 rounds per min just like the PzH 2000 an only minor difference is that the PzH 2000 is a semi-autonomous autoloader system that required a Propellant Charge Loader.
Ukraine has ordered 100 of them - unlike what was said in the video. This can be looked up in the Internet. And it's not the most modern one. The most modern howitzer from KMW is the RCH 155 which can even shoot and move faster than the phz2000.

The AGM turret itself? Actually a decent design, as it improves on the Zweitausend's main issue (the autoloader's poor reliability when the vehicle's interior is dirty) by getting rid of the turret crew. The whole system however (the AGM turret on the Boxer) is designed around a flawed concept of firing on the move, so it's a bad design from the very beginning.
Actually, the ukrainian war shows that the "duration of use" from pzh is not so good developed, but for defense, this is the very first time that the pzh is beeing serious used. I detest when someone claims something is "over engineered". All it shows is their lack of understanding of WHY it's engineered the way it is. While trying to make out it's "too complicated" because that's easier than admitting they don't understand something made by people far smarter than them

That is however not the case here.
In this case every part of the solution was technically necessary.
So not over engineered per se; just to the specifications required.
It is very much the case here, the autoloader design is about as overengineered as it physically can be (it's the most complicated one out there).

If the quality of your stuff is better than the other guy...and you can still produce your stuff in decent numbers, then you will be victorious. The problem is that having just a few very high quality war machines ,because you chose to spend so little on your defense, isn't going to amount to much when the stuff hits the fan.

It was designed in the late stages of the Cold War to survive enormes potential Soviet counter battery fire. To do that, the Germans wanted a howitzer that could fire 10 rounds really fast and get out of its position even faster.
It was not designed for staying stationary and fire all day round.

The PzH2000 is the best SP howitzer in the world. It's reliable and not over engineered. It's far better than the American M-109A6 Paladin, the Britisch AS-90 or the French Ceasar howitzers.
The pzh 2000 isnt really overengineered. It's working quite well in the AFU right now. They are getting good feedback.
The successor is already engineered. It has the same gun but needs only two people, is fully automated, can shoot while driving and still hit because the shot is cracked when the computer has the barrel on target. And the chassis is on wheels what needs much less fuel.
They are putting the ssme functionality on a new variant of the pzh2000

The RCH 155 is overhyped, and that's its main "feature". Firing on the move decreases accuracy compared to firing while stationary while providing no real benefits. Yet another example of "German (over)engineering".
@@olekzajac5948no. The main feature is automation and modularization. It's faster, equally as accurate as the PzH2000, more modular (the AGM can be used on various vehicles) and on top it can also shoot while driving.

he voiced no complaints so far, on the contrary, with the 5 man crew, maintenance is quite easy.
Ukraine struggled, due to lack of maintenance schooling (due to sped up training) and having to conduct life video calls with the german maintenance crews, to fix minor issues of the system, that would be fixed on the routine daily service of trained crews.
Germany has always made the best weapons. Luckily their only weakness was Hitler's ego.
PzH-2000 is the fastest artillery system in the world with 10 Rounds per minute aside from the SK K9-Thunder which can do 6 rounds per minute. Is it Over-Engineered? It certainly is but is it the most complicated and the most sophisticated Artillery System in the world? No, that one belongs to the K9-Thunder with its K9A2 Variant which is completely autonomous and only requires 2 personnel on-board being the Driver and the Gunner/Commander and also can do 10 rounds per min just like the PzH 2000 an only minor difference is that the PzH 2000 is a semi-autonomous autoloader system that required a Propellant Charge Loader.
The Chassis is elongated to the leo 2, to fit in the autoloader. Thr project that was based on the leo 2 chassis was a failure.
Ukraine has ordered 100 of them - unlike what was said in the video.

And it's not the most modern one.

The AGM turret itself? Actually a decent design, as it improves on the Zweitausend's main issue (the autoloader's poor reliability when the vehicle's interior is dirty) by getting rid of the turret crew.
The whole system however (the AGM turret on the Boxer) is designed around a flawed concept of firing on the move, so it's a bad design from the very beginning.
