- It's time to start Side 2 of Hemispheres! This Rush reaction includes our first-time reaction to Circumstances and The Trees. We also check out a Richard Cheese cover version of The Trees.
This is our first time listening to this album. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.

RUSH The greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be.
G.O.A.T. This band will never be copied.
Imagine being an 11 year old listening to this on his sister's stereo system after saving up his allowance to get the album? Well, that was me and I absolutely soaked this stuff up and became a life-long Rush fan.
It was fun and somewhat magical listening to this as a 10-11 year old boy. Thanks people!
Love the reaction, thank you as always. Hemispheres is easily one of my fave Rush albums, very heavy, intricate and whimsical. But don't be dropping' Jethro Tull references if you don't listen to any Tull. You guys seriously need to rectify that. Tull were a big influence on Rush. Geddy considered 'Thick as a Brick' to be the best live performance he ever saw, the band appreciated Tull for both the level of musicianship they exhibit but also their dedication to put on great shows, and Neil has said he was influenced by Ian Anderson's lyricism. Time to roll out a Jethro Tull album beyond a cursory skimming of Aqualung. Make it so!
I wouldn't say they were still finding their identity at this point. They found it long before this, and it was basically whatever they wanted it to be.
Hemispheres contains some of the finest music they have ever produced. Pure 🔥
Like Neils wood block section as a nod to trees speaking😊
Death is the equalizer for all living things.
While it’s certainly true that Peart said in interviews that he hadn’t intended to pen an ideological message with the song, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t contain such a message. After all, he said that the idea came to him in the form of a question: what would trees do if they acted like people?
The Trees was only written a few years after Anthem, and immediately after 2112, so it’s not a surprise that his [then] ideological predilections would be reflected in the story he wrote.
PS - my understanding was that the idea of cartoon trees fighting amongst themselves just appeared to him, rather than having been seen in a newspaper.
Hemispheres is such a fun album. It was VERY ambitious in how complex it is. Circumstances is good rocker, and The Trees was an instant fan favorite. It's so..... Rush. It's different and quirky and odd and jumps all over the place.
Some drummers who also write music are Dave grohl, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Ringo Starr, Roger Taylor from Queen
Of course you will listen to the live version of "The Trees" from Exit...Stage Left... I must recommend you start with "Broon's Bane". Which is Alex's virtuosity on guitar, prelude to "The Trees"... and if you let it run through to "Xanadu" you can appreciate the amazing marathon endurance of the lads... LONG, yes, but soooo impressive.
Cheese sounded a bit like Phil Hartman or at least I can visualize Phil doing this. Miss the guy!!
I've always wondered if Neil had to have his drum kit bolted down...to the stage?

We are all equally the same. A station doesn't define ones status.
One of the best side b's. My 2nd favorite Rush album after Permanent Waves.
Dick Cheese to be precise. It’s not quite the Weird Al treatment obviously, but there is something to be said for artistic freedom of expression which he took liberty in, and killed it.🤔🖖🤘✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🪗🎺🎷🪘🪕🎻🪇🎼
Ahhh, the guitar sound. The 'Canadian' Hiwatt DR-103. The Boss chorus pedal. The magical white Gibson ES-355. Lots of echo. And Al's fingers
Great great album, the writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote the french saying.
If I'm thinking correctly, the percussive sounds Dev seems to like are called "Temple Blocks". Thanks for your reactions. Love them.
I dunno, maybe it's the w33d, but I was kinda diggin that cover.
Great song, but I only listen to this song (or Xanadu) as part of 3-part musical medley on the live album "Exit...Stage Left". Broon's Bane-The Trees-Xanadu. This is peak Rush.
We're doing that medley after we finish the Hemispheres studio album.
I love both of these songs and Hemispheres is my favourite Rush album!
Wow. What a cover version 😂😂
I know how to pick 'em, don't I? 🤣
@@MusicforBusyPeople I was expecting another one from the morose clown 😂
The Trees is the first song I ever learned on bass. I learned it on 12 string as a matter of fact about 8 years before I actually started playing
One thing you have to do with Rush is enjoy the lyrics separately as genius as a poem. The music is on another level also so if you try to process both at the same time it's too much. You'd have to have an IQ greater than mine to do that
Another great Rush album....
Thank you both for all the amazing rush reactions
Why did you stop the cover short? Why? WHY??
That cover sounded like the comedian Steve Martin singing and...I was LOVING it!!
Sorry about that. Lol. I put a link to it in the Description.
I would imagine with a name like Richard Cheese he is somewhat of a novelty act
With a name like Richard Cheese, it's gotta be good! 😂
Looked it up, it's a guy named Mark Jonathan Davis.who does a comedy/big band act. Sounds like the late Phil Hartman
Circumstances has the best guitar transition riff into the chorus they created
The Trees was an anti-collectivist song. Peart was still in his Ayn Rand phase, and this speaks to the issues equally. Oaks are the wealthy and the maples are the poor. Both think they have a point. But the communist or collectivist method is to cut everyone down to the lowest common denominator. It is the only way to keep all equal. Peart's lyrics from Anthem, 2112 and The Trees all point to an anti-collectivist political philosophy. In his early writings he put a lot of effort into individualism and the authenticity of the individual within societal constraints. Brilliant stuff if you understand the influences.
This was the first Rush song I remember hearing. I was 12 when I heard it on the radio in 1979. It hooked me for life!
I was 12 in 1981 when I heard this album. Had already heard Permanent Waves and 2112 and this album was different but incredible!
Great reaction!! Two undeniable banger tracks. Only Rush could make a song about class struggle, apply it to the trees in a forest, and have it absolutely ROCK!!
Circumstances is a song that really flies under the radar, unfortunately so. It has such a killer groove, great lyrics (including en Français! And as a Canadian, I understood it!), and chorus hook! Short & sweet - but as you pointed out, NOT simple! Cheers.
I listened to Hemispheres every day for months when I was 16. My little brother had been listening from the shadows the whole time until one day I caught him putting it on the turntable. He was about 9 or 10, and without any encouragement he had become a Rush fan without me even knowing about it! Lol..
Yes, good wood, save "The Trees"> La Villa Strangiato! Great Album. Thanks!!!
The metaphors in "The Trees" are not the most subtle you'll ever hear, but I still love that song!
That cover was hilarious, but I don't think that's what he was going for. 😂🤣
Careful what you ask for you just might get it
2 things come to mind when I hear these lyrics Russian revolution 1917 (Tsar's family were executed) and French revolution in 1789 "off with their heads" la guillotine!! When French bourgeoisie lost their heads
Like this song on Hemispheres. Thanks for getting to these two songs.
Adjective for Mike - "Lucky Guy"
Love the work you guys put into these videos, right from the Thumbnail's to the reaction, addition of live performances, and Album artwork etc.
The Trees is commentary of the Canadian issue of the French Separatist (the maples) wanting to become their own country from Canada (the Oaks). It was brought up in an interview with Bob Colburn on Rockline.
Bien sûr, must sing in Français to bring the point home, estie!😊
This was a metaphorical story of Capitalism (the Oaks) and Socialism (the Maples) and ultimately about Communism (the Axe that cut them down), but also be interpreted as the Corporations vs the Workers, etc... It was always very much up to the listener to determine.
When Neil wrote the lyrics they were purely about a cartoon he had seen, no message just a funny cartoon.
Cue Bill Murray! Hah Thks.
If they dig the way they're made!!!! 😂😂😂😂 Oh my gosh totally made my morning I'm laughing so hard how in the world did you find that?!?!?!
Lots of searching. We try to only listen to "interesting" ones. Lol
The song’s lyrics are based on a short story Neil read. As always the bookworm.
The Maples represent Canada and the Oaks the USA, our struggle as neighbouring nations, and the Oaks don’t care about the maples.
Just found your channel and instantly fell in love, got so many rush videos to catch up on!
That should have been an " UNDER cover" of "The Trees"
I always preferred sausage and pepperoni on my pizza rather than cheese. Still, nice try, Richard.
at 2:19 and some I see You are not comprehending playing that bass line while singing the song. Go listen again
at 3:22 is you started to catch on. It took me about a thousand hours to be able to sing and play this at the same time and the secret is you can not think about either part.
I love rush and I love your reactions to them. But it must be said that Richard cheese is hilarious. Famous rock songs done in campy lounge lizard Las Vegas Style . Check out his covers of Hot for Teacher by Van Halen and Rape Me by Nirvana. Not for everybody but I find it hilarious👍🖖🍻🇨🇦
Actually Dev, most axe and hatchet handles are (were) made from the wood of Ash trees, White Ash to be precise (also still used in high-end baseball bats.)
I do enjoy your reactions. I have never heard the covers that you play! Don’t like them all, but they are interesting. How do you find that crap? Lol
It takes a bit of research to find all that crap 🤪
Unrelated question: Has Dev ever done any modeling, acting or media work? She looks familiar to me besides this channel obviously. 😊 ❤ from 🇨🇦
Not really
Dean Martin must be turning over in his grave with that cover song.
No, he wasn’t dedicating the cover song to the trees. No way. Just the oaks!
The lyrics here were a bit of a farce. Inspired by a cartoon in a newspaper of two trees squabbling over something. Neil thought it would be funny to imagine, what if trees behaved like people and how would he craft that into a lyric? It was rudimentary, but it is perfectly applicable to our world today. Where once the driving force was equality of opportunity, it has been bastardized to become equality of outcomes, wherein personal performance, skills, passion, drive, and excellence are inconsequential.
"What I know about this album, the last one is an instrumental." The last one is THE instrumental and possibly the most complicated piece of music the band ever did. 🙄
It has nothing to do with trees.
Unfamiliar with metaphors, eh? You really think it's about trees? First blush chumps? Guess the forming of a union and all of the other obvious allusions went past ya?
A metaphor for communism
the trees is not about trees. go deep into peart's lyrics. it is about society and racism. it is not a fairytale.
Super relevant today considering Republicans want to only help the Oaks and Democrats are sticking up for the Maples. Trump wants to come along and cut them all down and build high rises.
