What is Wassenaar? Elaborate Explanation: There are some high tech conventional arms, technologies and Dual use goods and Technologies. Obviously we do not want them to go into hands of irresponsible nations. So, this Wassenaar Arrangement is an non binding agreement between a group of responsible countries who are responsible and possess high end goods and technologies. These countries must not give away (export) technologies or goods to irresponsible countries. In Short: It's an Export Control Regime of Conventional Arms and Dual use Goods/Technologies What are Dual Use Goods/Technologies: These are Goods/Technologies normally used for civilian purposes, but can also be used for military purposes 4 such Groups in total: >> Wassenaar Group - Export Control of Conventional Arms and Dual Use Technologies >> NSG (Nuclear Supplier's Group) - Export Control of Nuclear equipments and technologies >> MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime) - Export Control of Missile Equipments and Technologies >> Australia Group - Export Control of Biological and Chemical Weapons and Techologies Advantage to a country if it joins any of the above groups - Access to high end technologies Background of Wassenaar: >> It is a successor to COCOM formed by US and allies to restrict technology flow to Soviet and its allies >> In 1996, Wassenaar was formed as the COCOM lost its relevance on collapse of Soviet >> Wassenaar is a place in Holland, Netherlands Wassenaar Arrangement and India: >> India is now the 42nd member of the group - which implies that world believes that India is a responsible state >> As a result, India's NPT credentials will improve although India is not a member of NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) >> This provides a strong case for Entry of India into NSG NSG and India: >> NSG was started making India as a target (India did nuclear tests in 1974) >> But this is now nullified as India showed responsibility in past few decades. Many countries including US support India's bid to the Entry >> India is now a member of MTCR and Wassenaar. And soon India's chances are high to get membership in Australia's group. >> For NSG: Although India has a support of many countries, Entry to NSG looks unlikely for few more years due to strong opposition from China
john doe Hi, you don't get technologies straight away. You have to ask other countries now like USA for certain conventional arms technologies - These include naval, airspace and army. I don't know the names of any technologies specifically. But previously they would not give due to Wassenaar Arrangement, now that we are a member, it will be easier

Elaborate Explanation: There are some high tech conventional arms, technologies and Dual use goods and Technologies. Obviously we do not want them to go into hands of irresponsible nations. In Short: It's an Export Control Regime of Conventional Arms and Dual use Goods/Technologies
What are Dual Use Goods/Technologies: These are Goods/Technologies normally used for civilian purposes, but can also be used for military purposes
4 such Groups in total:

>> NSG (Nuclear Supplier's Group) - Export Control of Nuclear equipments and technologies
>> MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime) - Export Control of Missile Equipments and Technologies

Advantage to a country if it joins any of the above groups - Access to high end technologies

>> It is a successor to COCOM formed by US and allies to restrict technology flow to Soviet and its allies
>> In 1996, Wassenaar was formed as the COCOM lost its relevance on collapse of Soviet
>> Wassenaar is a place in Holland, Netherlands
Wassenaar Arrangement and India:
>> India is now the 42nd member of the group - which implies that world believes that India is a responsible state
>> As a result, India's NPT credentials will improve although India is not a member of NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty)
>> This provides a strong case for Entry of India into NSG
NSG and India:
>> NSG was started making India as a target (India did nuclear tests in 1974)
>> But this is now nullified as India showed responsibility in past few decades. Many countries including US support India's bid to the Entry
>> India is now a member of MTCR and Wassenaar. And soon India's chances are high to get membership in Australia's group.
