A CHALLENGE FOR THE ACTOR is a very fine book, loaded with insight as well as good old theatrical common sense. Currently reading Jared Brown's THE FABULOUS LUNTS, a dual biography of Alfred Lunt & Lynn Fontanne. They hired Uta Hagen when she was 18 to play Nina in their production of Chekhov's THE SEAGULL. Fascinating reading!
Uta Hagen was one of Charles Nelson Reilly's teachers. He talks about her at length in the play/film Life of Reilly available on TH-cam. His beginner's class with Miss Hagen had a who's who of great actors. And as he said of them as beginners, they couldn't act for shit! Mr Reilly was well known in TV and was a noted theatrical director and acting teacher. Do yourself a favor and watch Life of Reilly!
This is really good stuff and the last exercise is very good. Mamet's book is mostly bunk. Anyone who thinks that Jimmy Stewart was a good actor should look at what Paul Newman did in Mamet's script The Verdict. That fine performance is what Hagen is talking about here--transference.
i am intrigued by the book and author you speek of. But, what concerns me is the question of 'mechanical' acting. It would be ignorance to dismiss the teachings of Acting as a artform, such of those of Stanislavsky and the concept Uta Hagen is trying to teach.
Watch Out; Uta always played style and overacted. Uta never worked in film because she tried to find behavior outside herself. Uta never understood Stanislavsky
+itillbeme1 She was pretty good in "Boys from Brazil" but I know what you mean. BLA BLA BLA and then the curtain goes up and you should listen, stay in the light and make sure you can be heard. enough said.
You're used to film acting where several takes are spliced together in the editing room and called "a performance." Bull Shit, lady. Sustained character and devotion to craft is what Uta Hagen was about, not the confetti movie stuff you're used to. Her Martha was so good it comes alive on the recording without even seeing her. (Yes, Taylor was great, too. Just not as much Martha as Edward Albee wrote into the part.)
Uta was a great actress. I saw her on Broadway in "Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolff?". A powerhouse performance.

This is one teacher who could ACT!! Who could back up everything she taught. Amazing talent.

I eat up everything this woman says. I just ordered her "Challenge for the Actor" book on eBay -- I can't wait to read it!

As well Uta always thought behavior was found by physical enviroment or activities, she never understood motivation over style or words.
