Jataka tales - The bird that dropped gold grains : Once a hunter was hunting in the forest. Suddenly he heard a song of a nightingale. Following the song, he reached the tree where the bird was singing. He was shocked by what he saw. When it was singing, gold grains were coming out of its mouth. Before the bird could fly away, he quickly threw a net and captured it. He took it home and locked it in a cage. Everyday when it sang, the hunter collected the gold grains and sold them. He became richer day after day. But 1 day, the hunter thought, '' If the king comes to know about this bird, he might be angry at me because I didn't tell him about it. He can punish me or kill me. I must give this bird to the king as a gift. He might give me a big reward then. '' Thinking so, the hunter gave the bird to the king as a gift and received a big reward from him. The king became richer day after day by collecting the gold grains in his royal treasury. But 1 day, the king's prime Minister said to him, '' Your Highness, please don't keep this bird with you in your palace. Let it fly away freely. '' When the king asked the reason behind it, the minister replied, '' Your Highness, how can a bird drop gold grains from its mouth? There must be something bad about it too. It could cause your death or the death of your family. It can be unlucky. Please let it be free and go away. '' The king agreed and let it fly away. The nightingale flew on top of the castle and shouted to the king's people, '' There are 4 fools in this kingdom. First I was a fool that I got captured by the hunter. The 2nd fool is the hunter who did not keep me with him but gave me to the king. The 3rd fool is the minister who advised the king to set me free. And the biggest fool is the king of course, who agreed to the minister's words without thinking. So I won't stay in this kingdom anymore. I am going. '' The nightingale flew towards the Himalayas mountains, never to return again.
Jataka tales - The Blacksmith and the Death God : Once in a kingdom, there lived a poor blacksmith near the edge of a dense forest. One evening a powerful and learnt sage appeared in front of his house looking for a night shelter. The blacksmith welcomed him, served him good food and looked after him very well all night. In the morning the sage said, '' I am very pleased by your service. Ask me 3 wishes and I will grant them. The blacksmith said, '' Kindly grant me a life of 100 years. '' The sage said, '' Granted. You will live for a 100 years. The 2nd wish he asked was that his business should flourish a lot over the years. The sage granted this wish too. The clever blacksmith said, '' Lastly, I wish that whoever should sit on the chair you are sitting must be stuck to it till I allow him to leave. The sage eyed him suspiciously but granted him this last wish. After the day he turned 100 years old, the Death God Yamraj came to his house to take his life away. The blacksmith asked him to sit on the chair. Without suspecting anything fishy, Yamraj sat down and to his surprise, was stuck to it completely. The blacksmith laughed and said, '' Now you can't move from this chair till I permit you to.'' He was very happy and thought that now he can live for as many more years as he wants because Yamraj was his captive. When it was evening, the blacksmith thought to have chicken for dinner. He cut off the head of a hen to cook, but to his surprise, the head joined back and the hen was still alive. When the same thing happened to a lamb he wanted to eat, the blacksmith realized what was happening. As long as Yamraj was stuck to the chair, no creature in the world could die. The blacksmith said, '' Because of my foolishness, you are stuck to this chair and no living being can die. As a result, there is chaos arising. The numerous birds are eating away all the fruits and vegetables everywhere. Hundreds of snakes are roaming around. There are animals, pests, insects and other tiny creatures troubling all the humans. Now I understand my mistake. If there is birth, death will always inevitably follow after it. To maintain the balance in nature, every living being must die. '' He finally said, '' Oh Yamdev, you can get up from this chair and go. Take me along with you. Now I know that one's death is equally important as his birth. '' Yamraj replied, '' I am glad you understood that. '' Finally, Yamraj took the blacksmith's soul with him and earthly creatures began dying again. The balance in nature was thus restored.
Jataka tales - The magic spell, the fox and the royal priest There once lived a very learnt royal priest in a kingdom. He desired to help the king and his subjects become more prosperous and happy. For this reason, he decided to learn a magic spell that enables one to control all humans and animals. He went to the forest and did penance to repent for his past sins. He did a ritual and recited the mantra of the spell 21 times. After the ritual, he said, '' Now I have the power to control all humans and animals. I will use this power for the well being of my kingdom and its people. '' Suddenly a fox came out from the bushes behind him and said, '' I have been hiding behind the bush since the start of the ritual. So I too have gained this power like you. Now I can control all the animals in the forest. '' The priest said, '' Oh God. But promise me that you will never use the power in a wrong way. '' The fox replied, '' I won't give any promise like that. I will use it for my own benefit and personal interest. And you cannot stop me from doing that. '' Saying so, the fox ran away in the forest. One day, the fox saw a beautiful vixen. With his magic, he made her agree to marry him. The fox now was afraid of no one and controlled all the animals in the forest. He troubled all the animals who teased him by making them do funny things. Whenever he wanted a chariot, he made 2 elephants stand together. He made a lion stand on top of the elephants and he sat on the lion with his wife like a king. The fox became so arrogant that he thought that he should become the king of the royal priest's kingdom. He gathered all the animals to act like his army and marched towards the kingdom to attack it. Upon reaching the castle, he shouted to a soldier, '' Tell your king to surrender his kingdom to me. I have a magical power due to which he cannot defeat me. If he refuses, I will kill him myself.'' The king could not believe his ears when the soldier told him what the fox said. Upon seeing the army of the fox, the king became worried because his army could easily defeat a human army, but not an army of animals controlled by a magic spell. He quickly called the royal priest who said, '' Your Majesty, by accident the fox learnt that spell from me. So it is my responsibility to rescue the kingdom from him. '' The royal priest went on top of the palace wall and shouted to the fox, '' You are claiming that you are very powerful to control your animals. I don't believe you. Can you make your lions roar? The arrogant fox replied, '' Yes I can. '' Saying so, the fox used the spell to make his lions roar. The lion on which he was sitting with his wife also roared. This thunderous roar frightened the 2 elephants who dropped the fox and his wife on the ground and ran away. Seeing the elephants running, all the other animals began to run away too. The fox and his wife were trampled to death by the frightened animals. Seeing this, the priest went to the king to tell him that the danger was gone. The king praised him for protecting his kingdom and being very clever.
Jataka tales - The arrogant bear There once lived a big bear in a forest. He was so arrogant about his strength, speed and good fur that he always criticised other animals. When he saw the tortoise, he would say, '' Oh Mr tortoise, how unfortunate you are for having to bear this heavy shell. It makes you very slow to walk or run. '' To the rabbit he said, '' You have such long ears but such a small tail. This makes you look funny. It should have been the opposite. '' When he saw the elephant, he said, '' Hey big Fatso, your long trunk is a disgrace. You should get rid of it.'' The elephant was offended by this and chased him. But the bear was faster and in the end, the elephant had to give up. This made the bear more arrogant and he said, '' Ha Ha! You are too heavy to be able to catch me. '' All the animals were fed up with his arrogance and rude behavior. So they decided to go to the wise chevrotain and ask him to change his behavior for good. Mr Chevrotain found the bear resting under a tree. He greeted him and said, '' You know, Mr Bear, it's really not good for you to make fun and criticise other animals. You can find yourself not having any friends due to this.'' The bear replied, '' Maybe, but who is good enough to be my friend ? There is no one like me. I am fast, strong and handsome while the other animals are not. '' Mr chevrotain was very surprised by his arrogance. The bear walked away, lost in his thoughts and didn't realise where he was going. Suddenly he fell into a big hole in the ground where there was a huge beehive. He crashed against it and disturbed all the bees. The furious bees began stinging him and over his body, making him shouting loudly in pain. Hearing his screams, all the animals came running to the hole but everyone was scared to help him for fear of getting stung by the bees. After some seconds, the bear became unconscious and all the bees went away to construct another beehive. The strong elephant used his long truck to lift the bear out of the hole. Mr chevrotain bought a herb and all the animals started rubbing it on his body to cure the stings and make him conscious. After regaining consciousness, the bear thanked them for helping him. He promised that he would never be arrogant or rude again because he understood that they were always worthy of being his friends since the start. All the animals accepted him as their friend.
