When I open TH-cam it defaults to the Suggested Videos page. The first three are always either by creators I’m subscribed to (*if* they’ve uploaded something since my last session) or are videos similar to others that I’ve watched several of in my last session. That’s how it used to work, anyway. Then I go to my Notifications page and see uploaded videos that didn’t appear on my Suggestions page. This is as Shad has said, since maybe January. Today I saw one video by someone I’m subscribed to, but it wasn’t Shad’s video even though it showed on my Notifications page. Nor did any of the other new videos on my Notifications page show on my Suggestions page except the one. I almost always get notifications from channels that I’m subscribed to- it’s very rare that I don’t and it doesn’t seem to correlate with their popularity or the topic of a video or the overall theme of the channel. Basically I’m not seeing consistency one way or another. That’s just my experience with my list of subscriptions and where I live. I consider myself fortunate that I get most notifications.
In terms of accessibility they really are. Like, you're not gonna find kevlar or metal armor in 99% of places, but nearly every high school has a whole team's worth of football gear. Best part is that it's designed to handle blunt force impacts so to a large extent it's the stabs you have to worry about. Pair it with a trash can lid and you've got a real good defense.
Motorcycle helmets are not durable, good blunt force protection, but they are intended by design to be replaced wjen damaged... repairability is nearly impossible which in post apocalypse makes them less disarable.
TH-cam I found if you miss a few videos from someone it almost completely stops recommending them on the home page. As lots of people saw the last video I think this is why this video is getting more visibility.
I had to watch two or three videos a day for three days before I started getting recommendations from Shad again. As opposed to watching two minutes of one video from a guy I've never seen before and then half of my recommendations are from that guy's channel. And I'm still getting as many recommendations for Skall as Shad and I haven't watched one of his in about two months. (Nothing against Skall, he just hasn't been a priority)

They try to limit content that they don't agree with. I'm disgusted by them. Right now though, they are the best content channel online. People need to make that change.
Yet TH-cam has no problem recommending me two channels with like 50 viewers each having beef with each other. Their recommendation system is entirely broken. If the people I'm subscribed too haven't uploaded, it takes me a solid few minutes to actually find something I will watch. This wasn't the case 10 years ago. My tastes have not changed drastically over that time, or at least not enough for that much of an impact. The "Don't recommend this channel to Me" feature doesn't work either, I have used it on Cenk's Nephew's videos so many times, and yet I still get his trash in my feed.

Something to keep in mind is that motorcycle helmets are greatly compromised after the first impact. In theory if you even drop the helmet one time, you're supposed to throw it out. Maybe you could consider briefly shilling your Shadiversity videos early on in your Knightswatch videos---almost like doing an ad? You do cool stuff that's worth watching; I wouldn't mind ads like _those_ in Knightswatch, especially since the act of blacklisting a channel is the kind of political thing worth talking about!
Fun video And you know, Shad's right! I'd not considered that: a motorcycle helmet approach would make an excellent shield! Lightweight and padded vs. heavy blows. Nothing is safe from the Bec, though.
Tbf, I don't even think it did that badly against the bec. Yes, the bec got through, but it did take a pretty big full force swing to do so. It's not exactly easy to pull one of those off in combat. There are ways to do it, but just the fact that you're limited to them reduces the amount of options you have by quite a bit.
I am doing the only 3 things I can currently do, ring that bell, make sure to see (and sometimes, re-watch) your videos, thumb it up, and leave a comment so the algorithm doesn't kill you. YewTub is now over-adjusting in order to convince the gullible that they weren't shadow banning Shad, heavens forbid! Of course, they've regularly shadow banned my comments for imagined "hate" speech, so it's entirely likely this comment will never be seen.
A product designed to keep your head safe from high speed traumatic impact... and they're surprised its doing a decent job holding up against a high speed traumatic impact lol.
Plastic is pretty good when you chose the right type. Polycarbonate and hdpes might be better than wood. Only problem for the modren day is tiny energetic darts tend to melt through them since they are plastic.
to be fair, helmets are designed for highspeed blunt impact. it's expected to have face hit the road. something like a sword or knife is pressure over a smaller footprint which is going to be very different. I'm personally not surprised but, I see why it could be.
Make a shield with carbon fibre layers on top of like an inch thick foam layer, then a plywood layer layer. The foam might allow flex and prevent or diminish penetration.
With how light it is I'm pretty sure you could just put it as the top layer of a pre-existing shield (kind of like the cloth/hide coverings) and roll with that.

9:27 That compressing is how they are supposed to work in order to mitigate the impact of falling off a motorcycle at high speed, so the results of this test doesn't surprise me. The piercing test you highlighted earlier is where the rubber will meet the road so to speak. Edit: 11:54 Yup, there it is. There aren't really any practical helmets that can withstand that type of hit.

I sincerely hope things pick up for you in the future because I see the passion and effort which goes into your videos, and that you have a genuine love for the stuff you talk about. I've always had an interest in medieval castles, but you have taught me quite a lot which I never even thought about. The world needs people like you to bring this stuff to life, and for the type of content you create, I really can't think of anyone better to create it. You're doing an awesome job. Best of luck going forward, and please try to keep your chin up. Just subscribed to THE SHADLANDS - Don't forget to claim a username for that channel.

I'm impressed with how good that helmet turned out to be. I'd definitely love to see a shield made out of it too & tested again arrows from different draw strengths.
Hey Shad, After TH-cam randomly suggested your previous video, I felt compelled to share my thoughts. Although I didn't watch most of it (as it was roughly 40 minutes long, and I felt I already grasped the content), I did explore your most recent work. I watched this video and another from a long time ago to help me gauge what has changed since your LOTR castle review 7 years ago. About 5-7 years ago, which seems wild now, I was almost exclusively watching your channel. I was absolutely hooked. The topics you covered drew my interest significantly. Eventually, I took a break from your channel and, surprisingly, haven't returned as I have with others. I wanted to provide a list of reasons, based on my honest, constructive, and transparent criticism/opinion, about the state of the channel. My intention is not to be mean but to possibly help you attract more viewers. (Note: This is my personal opinion and how I personally choose to watch content in my feed, only applying to videos similar to this in this case. If you disagree, feel free to share your own opinion. I'm simply here to offer my perspective based on my experience with the Shadiversity channel.) Most Recent Video (Motor Helmet): • The test didn't start until 8:44. • There was too much talking. • The video is 23:39. • The test results were somewhat disappointing given the viewer's time commitment. • Consider changing up the title. Now, to expand on each point: • In a video presented as a damage test, the actual test should be spread throughout the majority of the video without too much filler and should start sooner. A structure like Intro > brief presentation of test equipment > brief explanation > Test > closing results would be ideal. • "Too much talking" might be misleading. Dialogue is necessary, but it should be accompanied by visually stimulating elements like slow-mo shots and your initial reactions, similar to what the Slow Mo Guys do. Including a compilation of all the hits in the "closing results" would also enhance engagement, whether through side-by-sides, slideshows, etc. • Consider shortening the video to around 15 minutes or less. The video's length is a significant factor for viewers deciding whether to commit their time. • While the test results weren't bad, the average viewer in this category tends to seek more visible destruction rather than mere dents and cuts. • The video titles could be more captivating. Titles that pose a challenge or question, such as "Can ____ beat ____?" always grab my attention. Summary: Your competition for viewers is, in essence, channels like DemolitionRanch. It's an oversimplification to compare swords versus guns, but the average viewer is drawn to destruction, drama, and excitement. Look at DemolitionRanch and How Ridiculous' most popular videos for insights into their video lengths, titles, and how quickly they engage the audience. While I understand you're more than just a damage test channel, these suggestions are aimed at potentially increasing your viewership based on the types of content I personally prefer when I watch this "damage" content. Focusing on snappy content, straight to the point narratives, avoiding misleading clickbait (not that you have done this), utilizing TH-cam shorts to advertise your latest uploads, and ensuring constant visual stimulation during discussions could enhance viewer engagement and attract a larger audience. Hope this helps Shad, hope you all have a good day.
I think you mentioned that you posted videos on rumble, I've heard youtubers speak about how if you post on that platform that youtube essentially blacklists your channel. I do not know how valid this is, but it might be worth investigating. Either way its terrible seeing what they've done to your channel. Ever showing the importance of pushing external platforms like discord even, so that when you notify people on those platforms youtube cannot prevent them from seeing it.
Ok so what I think was sorely missing in this test was a visor. Or more specifically the motorcycle goggles that are usually paired with these dirt bike helmets. I would love to see how well those hold up against impacts, especially from arrows and bolts, considering they give a massive visual advantage over a metal visor. Also this part here, 5:38, gave me a good idea of something I'd like to see on this channel. Basically I'd like to see a discussion on how modern materials and manufacturing techniques could enhance medieval weaponry. If we had medieval knights today, what would their gear be made of?
The weird thing about this is that I still get notifications for Shad's videos, since I clicked the bell icon and all. I genuinely get confused whenever people say they don't see the videos in their feed because doesn't that mean they just don't have notifications on? But there's also the fact that I saw a comment saying that even after clicking the bell, they weren't getting notified. I usually check the notifications to see what channels have new uploads for the day and then save them to my watch later playlist.
Hey, the notification bell worked this time. I hope you had fun wrecking that helmet^^ Can you repair the loose hilts/crossguards and rattling of the swords?
Technicaly the motorcycle helmet would protect you from more damage. The metal helmet would transfer waaaay more force to your head. Even though it would last longer than motorcycle helmet.

Oooh, this is an idea I haven't seen yet!
Love ya shad. Been around a long time. Sad to see how youtube is treating you.
Happy to see anything you do.
Machicolations!!!!!!
praying for you, Shad. We love you.
I am doing the only 3 things I can currently do, ring that bell, make sure to see (and sometimes, re-watch) your videos, thumb it up, and leave a comment so the algorithm doesn't kill you. I've followed you from the very beginning, and I really hope you pull of a magical recovery of sorts. All the best!
I've been queueing up some videos that I want to rewatch and just have them playing in the background whilst I clean the house, cook etc. when I'm WfH I'll even put them on my personal rig whilst I use my work laptop with the videos turned way down.
@@galenwolf Same man, I'm really hoping he manages to survive. However, our current society is a piece of garbage how'd rather waste 2h in a sempiternal doomscroll instead of watching a 15mins video of proper content. I am fearful for the future of some of my preferred channels.
Ooh, one of the OG’s. It’s a pleasure to meet you.
I can confirm, I have been subscribed for years and I legitimately have not been recommended any videos for at least two months. I get a lot from Knight's Watch and regularly watch those, but this is the first Shadiversity video I have seen in a long time.
"Recommended" aren't for subs, they're for what the algorithm thinks you might be interested in (which may or may not include subs). If you want your subs use you subs page, that what it's there for.
Fun timing. Very recently, I bought 2 moyocycle helmets specifically for sword sparring. I had previously learned the hard way how messy it can be when a practice sword hits titanium glasses frames…
Cannot tell you how excited I was to see the opening clip!
I’m getting notifications again.
I literally had the bell on but it didn’t give me them.

YewTub is now over-adjusting in order to convince the gullible that they weren't shadow banning Shad, heavens forbid!
Of course, they've regularly shadow banned my comments for imagined "hate" speech, so it's entirely likely this comment will never be seen.
That's why they are called NOtifications. Sometimes youtube says no.
Shadow ban 🔨

0:14 Ho mama. One day I’m gonna get a bec de corban and call it The Can Opener
The Man Opener is more accurate.
It's all well and good, until you get your bec stuck in a can and other cans rush you while you try to pull it out
A product designed to keep your head safe from high speed traumatic impact... and they're surprised its doing a decent job holding up against a high speed traumatic impact lol.
@@TGPDrunknHick Still went the exact way I expected. I knew the helmet would tank everything except for the pick.
Ooh, been curious about this for a bit, excited to see what happens
Shad et al., I truly hope that this channel does not die. I absolutely love your content. I would be crushed if these videos are taken away!
I love the Shadlands! The shorter videos really work for me. Thanks Shad and company.
The chemistry and timing between the three of you is great.

21:50: Thing is, if you look at historical paintings, in many cases there are clear thic padded hoods under helmets.
Okay, so can we get modern armor made with all the technologies?
Fiberglass.
Kevlar.
Impact Gel.
I know it's a simple thing but I love when you all flourish the swords. You obviously practice and you have such confidence. Whereas, I watch the dang blade like a hawk so as not to smack myself. Also, I love your videos. Please don't quit. You're one of my favorite creators.
This video was in my recommended tabs at the 42 minute mark after creation. So, at the very least I can confirm it was recommended to me, a subscriber, close to its upload time.
My favorite weapon, THE BEC DE CORBIN!!
I second this
Wife had been unsubscribed to her shock.
We have been binge watching your episodes
I've literally been wondering about this for about a week, randomly.
Shads channel is the best, I love all his content
It really is sad that TH-cam has done this to such an amazing channel. I hope you’ll be able to continue making videos in the manner you have been, but even if not. I as well as many of your other fans will support you no matter what.
I watch often, but haven't subscribed until today. Now I can see if they stop recommending. Great stuff as always guys.
Love that we are getting the answers to lifes most important questions.
Always love these videos. God speed Shad!

Since your latest video, TH-cam has been recommending your videos non stop, and I'm so happy for it!
that sword shaved some steal off the helmet. that was impressive.
Don’t give up Shad! You have the best medieval content on TH-cam!
You got it. I'm doubling my pledge. I wanted to do it for a while but the Patreon app doesn't allow custom pledges. But today I did it on my PC.
This is the first shadiversity video that i've seen recommended to me in quite some time, and i've been a sub for well over a year...probably two.
Dang, the warhammer is a beast, but that motorcycle helmet took the beating like a champ, i wonder how well my department's old riot helmets would hold up.
Have to go to bed, but I hope this interaction helps 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 will watch in full tomorrow.

Keep doing the great work you do!
You guys should take advantage of shorts to boost engagement. I know some people whine about it, but I've come across many wonderful long-form videos because of shorts.
Just pick a minute from your latest video and post it as a short, and in a pinned comment and the description, add link to the full video.
Ugh.. shorts.. youtube trying to be tiktok to fuel these short attention spand knuckle draggers
It was good to see this, I was looking at that getting that two hander for a while now. Good to know it can take a beating
Wear all the armor you want, put as much distance between yourself and your opponent as you want. You cannot stop it. The crow's beak is inevitable.

Is there even the slightest chance that TH-cam realized we were on to their shenanigans and stopped blocking the notifications to avoid fallout?
Nope
@@rockinHurley777 😭I wish we were capable of triggering genuinely epic fallout
Kmart was put down. It can happen to youtube. Nasty ads encouraged at least a few people to get blockers. I know I have had rumble a few years but just am not useing it. (Yet). There are not people makeing stuff for it an I am not going to. (For now). Im sure youtube can get scared. When what their pushing gets rejected harder by at least half of the people that should I dont see them surviving with all their employees or all their algorithms that stalk you.
its all done by an unfeeling bot.

This video was recommended to me in the top row of the front page as always 👍
Hi Shad, I watched your video where you explained that, due to the changes in traffic, this channel might not be viable for much longer.
I can't say for others, but I was recommended this video within an hour of it being put out.

For the first time in forever I actually saw this video on my feed! Love your stuff Shad and others
I didn't even get a notification for this video. Only the patreon one. Bruh.
I instantly got recommended content from Shadlands some time ago before you really made an announcement at all, so that is interesting.
YES youtube is finally giving me the notifications. Great to see you again shad
liked and replied so youtube knows we support this channel
Keep at it guys! I enjoy the mix of serious weapon history and fun fan fiction of weapons.
Everybody feeling tough and gansta until the Bec de corbin enters the chat.
I really appreciate the safety focus!
Shad you and your crew have some of the best content on TH-cam. Dont get discouraged
FYI, I've seen this and the new Shadlands videos showing up in my feed on TH-cam without having to search for them.
Never have had issues seeing your content. Everytime you post it always comes up
Are you finding them on the home page or your subscriptions page?
I'm impressed with how good that helmet turned out to be. I'd definitely love to see a shield made out of it too & tested again arrows from different draw strengths.
I owned one of the broadswords from Honshu.. Very nice blade . I touched up the edge a little and it was slicing very nice .Great blades over all .
Hey Shad,
After TH-cam randomly suggested your previous video, I felt compelled to share my thoughts.
I'm simply here to offer my perspective based on my experience with the Shadiversity channel.)
Most Recent Video (Motor Helmet):
• The test didn't start until 8:44.
• There was too much talking.
• The video is 23:39.
• The test results were somewhat disappointing given the viewer's time commitment.
• Consider changing up the title.
Now, to expand on each point:
• In a video presented as a damage test, the actual test should be spread throughout the majority of the video without too much filler and should start sooner.
May I suggest adding a 1 or 2 usd membership option? Specially for places with a weaker currencies.
I feel like the best way to help now is watch up vote and comment asap. Good video, I hope it does well!
This is the perfect length for a video like this.
I support you guys, I want you guys to succeed!
I can’t believe Shad didn’t take this opportunity to wear his gauntlets

We will fight for this channel to survive!
Nice video! 👍🏻 Glad to see this make it's way into my recommended tab!
Very epic thumbnail guys, way to go on the visual design for this one.
On here as soon as it appeared on my feed!
I'm happy to report that this video showed up in my feed as i would expect it to! have my watch time and engagement
Hey, the notification bell worked this time. I hope you had fun wrecking that helmet^^ Can you repair the loose hilts/crossguards and rattling of the swords?
I was reccomended this and got the notification, too. Maybe things'll get better.
Technicaly the motorcycle helmet would protect you from more damage. The metal helmet would transfer waaaay more force to your head. Even though it would last longer than motorcycle helmet.
