i have been fortunate enough to attend two ND-NAVY games ... those young men from the Naval acadamy are total CLASS !!! it never hurts to be associated with CLASS !!! Let the series continue !!!
People who want this rivalry to end don't understand the history of the university or how unique this rivalry is. While our rivalry with USC is built off animosity, a history of bad beats, close games, and wanting to take long trips to the west coast, the Navy rivalry exists because the Navy (big Navy, not just the school) kept the university open during WWII. Without the ROTC program funneling money into the university to train their cadets, and with all the able body young men going off to war, the university would have gone under and would NOT exist today without the Navy. To this day Navy ROTC has the most cadets at Notre Dame every single year by a wide margin. Because of that history, and because the Navy saved the University from shutting its doors, the story/myth is that the university agreed to play the Naval Academy every year until the Naval Academy decides they don't want to anymore.... I value the university holding to its history and long held agreements, and if you ever come to campus on a game day you are going to see midshipmen welcomed into tailgates, and treated like family all over campus. It is a rivalry now built on mutual respect and honor, and that is part of why the teams sing each other's alma maters at the end of every game. We shouldn't disrespect our commitment to an Academy that trains men of value that are going to go on to sacrifice so much to protect our country.... We should value our promises to them especially when that promise is as simple as playing 1 football game a year against them
The service academy games are part of Notre Dame's National fan base building. Playing on neutral NFL fields makes it easier for that fanbase to see ND.
That is true. Fun and 'edgy' Mailbag! LOL, loved it- and as you probably guessed, I save any salt for the other 'controversial' comment... 😉 My two points: 1) I do like the three year idea, where it is a celebration of the relationship, every three years, in a special out of country exhibition, or otherwise iconic location (Hell I would NOT complain if we just went to Dublin every three years!) - special uniforms, special celebrations and revisits of history of the relationship. It would be a punctuation point, not a yearly drubbing of the Academy, or disregarded win that teaches our men the lost art of defending the option each year to literally no purpose for the rest of their careers. No I don't think it is disrespectful, and no, I do not align myself with those that would pitch it out because some nod to tradition IS who we are. But to disregard the possibility of change is not a good recipe for being flexible in times of change. Shall we likewise turn back the clock in our reaction to and ignore: NIL, Transfer Portal, expanded playoff, and concentration of power and money in leagues and networks that are inimical to our independence as well as our success? Shall we continue to do no great aid in nearly all years to both programs? Bevacqua, he of one of those schools that you so diss in this cast, is possibly an agent of future change, and a child of one of the networks that cause the planets to spin around the football galactic center. But- And sure, nothing will happen in the short term. Certainly there is more than just a myth to the idea that only Navy can end the series, as there is the rather unequivocal Hesburgh utterance "As long as Navy wants to be on Notre Dame's schedule, they'll be on Notre Dame's schedule" - Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, former Notre Dame President. A powerful voice, even after his passing, he once threatened to expel not only myself but a whole class of student protesters (I can still see him coming out onto the Admin steps where we all were collected, and sort of shouting at us to disperse. No security, no minions. Just Him! I'll never forget it, still makes me shake my head!). I don't see any current-day president being the one that reneges on a Hesburgh promise. On the other hand, I never thought we would have an official NIL collective, let alone two. 2) On the Connecticut schools...just... Wow. We have just gotten over the bereavement for Traore, and now this?? (Of course I am joking quite a bit, but you had better hope all those Bloat and BrunSwishers are no good! Hated rivals to me, they are still fellow nutmeggers, and if any of them are any good at all, I will point it out endlessly until you ban me.) 😉 Go Irish
Im not the biggest fan of the rivalry with Navy...but ND wouldn't be a school right now without the Naval Academy. We will play Navy as long as they want. Think of someone else other ND for a minute.
I say YES Notre Dame should continue to play Navy. I also believe Notre Dame should resume their rivalries with Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue. I remember Notre Dame playing these teams every year. Huge mistake dropping games against those teams.
You cannot have 1/3 of the schedule against these no longer significant ‘rivalries’ USC is never going away, & a lot of people think Stanford should be an annual event as well. So with that you’re up to half the sched., and that’s not sustainable with the partial affiliation with the ACC. An every other year home & home with Mich. is something I could get behind. Same with Navy. Keeps the tradition, but doesn’t put too much emphasis on a game that 90% of the time is a lose/lose proposition for ND. Beating up Purdue annually is pointless, & MSU can maybe be a rotational game every 4-5 years. But you just can’t keep scheduling the same old tired BIG teams for nostalgic reasons. In the current national landscape, with the 12 team playoff system, scheduling teams from other conferences is imperative to get the brand seen by a national audience. USC is a must every year. They aren’t gonna suck forever, so keeping them around will be a huge national interest game much more often than not.
Yeah I agree ^ need to workout some deal to do a game a year versus a good SEC and good Big Ten team ss well as USC. Idk how ND gets it done but if there is a will there's a way.
God, Country, Notre Dame…right? Get away from the ACC and align more with the big ten. This not only improves strength of schedule but also allows us to continue the USC rivalry and play some older rivalries as well.
Why would they do that ? It’s part of their history and tradition. If people want to complain about how much the game helps or matters to ND in terms of the playoff then tell the SEC teams to stop playing FCS schools in week 9-10 every year to give themselves a bye week basically. There’s a double standard for ND when it comes to schedule.
ND needs to get into the Big 10. The Irish have an embarrassingly weak schedule and will have more trouble scheduling power conference schools. They need to keep the Navy rivalry out of respect for their history together.
I’m old school but in today’s CFB Landscape it makes no sense to play Navy every year! Every 3 years would be perfect to still RESPECT HISTORY and what Navy did for Notre Dame! Another note:… ND COACHES have made a Big mistake in keeping CJ CARR at 4th QB… he should have been promoted to the #2 after his awesome SPRING SHOWING and put the narrative out there that he’s the future starting in 2025. This would have eased the minds of many BIGTIME WR prospects to come to the IRISH… instead they keep passing and going to other schools! This is a huge DROPPED BALL by the coaching staff for sure!! GO IRISH 🏈☘️💪🏼
Oh boy, I just love it everytime ‘paragraph guy’ comes on here to post the history lesson as if any Notre Dame fan over the age of 30 has t heard the story 100 times.
Make it every 2-3 years or something. We have really nothing to gain from it. Even if we kick their ass it’s “wElL iT5 nAvY” We’re so focused on our past that we never really move forward into the future. The Navy game always sucks horribly to watch.. let’s be real
Can never get rid of the ND Navy game. ND would have been closed if it wasn’t for teaming up with Navy during WW2 . So if you think they should , then you don’t understand the History and Tradition Go Irish ☘️
I completely understand the history & tradition. And I 100% believe that the every other year Home & Home vs. Navy keeps the tradition alive without becoming victim to a litany of potential negatives. With the Playoff selection process the way it is currently structured, ND literally cannot play them every year. And they don’t play Army every year anyway.
@@Willie_McBride I could get with an every other year schedule for sure 👍 I just don’t think it would be honoring to either school to just to stop playing each other for ND to have better playoff outcomes.
Let's educate you even more about the series with Navy, Tyler. Yes, what you have said is correct about the rivalry. I had a cousin that played for the Naval Academy and in our family it was a big deal and we are diehard Notre Dame football fans as well. To say that Notre Dame doesn't have enough "mutual respect" for Navy because they don't play them at Navy is insulting to both Notre Dame and Navy. If it wasn't for Navy, there would be no Notre Dame and South Bend would be nothing more than a story in a history book. And your comments about the debt of gratitude that "the debt has been paid a million times over." is so arrogant and it shows you really don't know the meaning of this series. The reason this game is not played at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium is because the stadium only seats 34,000. Plus, there is no reason for Navy to have a stadium bigger than that because they don't play many big-name opponents. For Navy, when it hosts the game every other year it is played at "neutral" sites because this is by far Navy's biggest gate every other year and it helps the Academy financially when they can fill a 75,000-seat stadium when they play Notre Dame. And it is a huge recruiting tool for the Naval Academy knowing it plays Notre Dame every year and they play them in NFL stadiums and for Navy players it is a big deal. And it is rare for someone from the Naval Academy to play in the NFL. But these Navy guys are incredibly smart individuals. These Navy players were very good high school players that chose to have a career following football rather than pursue a dream of playing professionally. There are college football fans that make fun of Notre Dame fans like myself every year because Notre Dame plays Navy. Yet, when one of these school's fan bases that make fun of Notre Dame takes on one of the military academies, they aren't laughing as much. They are so relieved when it is over that they don't want to play them again. Ask Oklahoma and Michigan fans what it was like to play Army in 2018 and '19, respectively. They both had to sweat it out in OVERTIME to escape!! And name any other school that is a major player in college football that plays Navy or another service academy team EVERY year? Now, that being said talent-wise Notre Dame clearly has an edge. But Navy runs a great system that starts when they get there and they play a Junior Varsity schedule against some of the other small colleges on the East Coast (navysports.com/sports/2021/7/21/2018-jv-football-schedule) . So they have at least two years of learning the system before they step up to the Varsity level. That is why they have been successful. But when it is all said and done, I sure as hell want these guys protecting my country!! So before you disparage Notre Dame playing Navy, maybe you should spend a day in Annapolis and find out about what these guys go through each day. They have such a regimented schedule and everyone there must take part in a sport. Football is the easiest part of the day for these guys. There is not one class they have that is considered an "easy class". And if you want to talk about the schedule, Navy belongs on this year's schedule more than some teams that are currently on the schedule.
I think it could be a good way to combine Navy and BC and play then back and forth every other year. We then can do a similar thing with Stanford and USC that we already kind of do.
Yes they should continue having an annual game with Navy and Army. They've been a great rivalry. Navy saved ND back in the mid forties. I really do enjoy watching the games.
Ok, first of all it was the other way around, Naval contracts to use ND for Training & education, kept ND afloat during WWII. The issue is that this game is a lose/lose proposition for ND almost every year. Generally Navy is a much lower rated team. So beating them does nothing for SOS… the national trope on that is ‘It’s Navy, ND SHOULD best Navy but the potential to lose to Navy would destroy ND season. Plus with the Navy ‘Cut Block’ scheme it’s extremely dangerous to the ND lineman. Secondly, ND doesn’t play Army on an annual basis, so that’s out, and the ramification of the win/lose proposition is the same as Navy. Win, so what, it’s Army, you should win. Lose and it’s ‘OMG ND MUST SUCK THEY LOST TO ARMY’ see, lose lose. I’d do Navy on an every other year home & home… maybe rotate Army in with another occasional ‘formerly traditional rival’ on a 3-5 year basis. The schedule needs to be more diverse with the current playoff format & selection process, the old school ‘stick with traditional rivals’ is the same as saying ‘I dont ever want to win another Natty’
🙄 as an ND grad, you should be ashamed for bringing up this topic!

On the Connecticut schools...just...
Ten on the field vs. OSU says it all! Can never be repaid, allways in their debt.
You cannot have 1/3 of the schedule against these no longer significant ‘rivalries’
USC is never going away, & a lot of people think Stanford should be an annual event as well.
When ND joins the Big Ten the rivalry with Navy will go away.
You’re right about the lose lose situation. All respect to the naval academy but tired of watching them play dirty and f up our seasons
You guys have f’d up more of your own seasons than Navy ever could
ND needs to get into the Big 10.
ND coach stinks! He is the worst. Navy is undefeated, so us Army. Watch out!
They already lost to N Illinois😢hello!! At home now less! ND is beatable! No coaching. ND better get a coach, this guy is a loser!
When one dominates the other its not really a rivalry
Oh boy, I just love it everytime ‘paragraph guy’ comes on here to post the history lesson as if any Notre Dame fan over the age of 30 has t heard the story 100 times.
You don't "blame Navy for running the triple option?" How big of you!
Make it every 2-3 years or something. We have really nothing to gain from it. Even if we kick their ass it’s “wElL iT5 nAvY”
We’re so focused on our past that we never really move forward into the future. The Navy game always sucks horribly to watch.. let’s be real
Drop, Navy! Nothing to gain from playing them
SHIT CAN THE NAVY GAME TO ME ITS WORTH LESS😂🎉🎉
Can never get rid of the ND Navy game.
ND would have been closed if it wasn’t for teaming up with Navy during WW2 .
So if you think they should , then you don’t understand the History and Tradition
Go Irish ☘️
Did you listen to the podcast? He covers this.
@@Footballfanatic10008 uh yea did you ?
Cause he told us to LEAVE OUR THOUGHTS IN THE COMMENT SECTION ……
Never
Sorry yall we owe navy forever for keeping notre dame still existing durring ww2 so we play them as long as they want.
Are you scared?
Yes. The debt has been paid, end the series.
every 4 years play in Ireland or San Diego hahaha
Time to stop fighting our military
I agree!!!
🤮🤮🤮 pinstripe jerseys
I think it could be a good way to combine Navy and BC and play then back and forth every other year. We then can do a similar thing with Stanford and USC that we already kind of do.
No. USC must remain annual. You wanna rotate Stanford on a 3-4 year basis with maybe Purdue or MSU, or something like that, that may work.
its time to join the big ten
You know it’s NEVER going to change and the only people who care about this are NOT ND fans or graduates…like the dip sticks at ESPN. Every other “News” organization is will bring up this dumb topic because they are ignorant. I expected more of you! 😒😕🙄
Navy is a dirty team. Which ND DL will suffer season ending injury Saturday?
Dirty? They are undefeated, so is Army!
I'll bite: which ND DLs in recent years suffered "season ending injuries?"
Zero benefit playing Navy. Drop them.
Afraid ND might get beat!
Army and Navy are tuff well coached teams. Niw you want out. ND coach stinks, guy cant coach at all. Ten on field last year vs. OSU! Guy stinks and ND. Will go no place with him coaching!
SHIT CAN THE NAVY GAME TO ME ITS WORTH LESS😂🎉🎉
