Folks, let me tell you something. The Qing market is a blessing, because lumber and fabric is Qing cheap. Furthermore, there are events that allow you to leave the Qing tribute when they collapse. Furthermore, you can allow yourself to build at a French pace at level one of construction due to the fabric/wood price. Furthermore, colonising in Indonesia/Australia will give you rubber, gold, whales and oil, allowing you to grow late game. You have all the resources for all the game stages. Qing market also allows you to have infinite paper for universities in the early game.

Small fact: Joseon in the early 19th century is supposed to have 14-16M population. Paradox probably referred the population history of South Korea which only counts the half of the entire peninsula.

@@user-fi2fk2ei7o Yes, V3 does. The country info tells you how many population it has instead of “pop”. As far as I remember, V2 showed the population number in the world statistics sheets that is exactly 4 times of “male adult” pops thou. V2’s HPM mod had Korea with 16M population which is equivalent to 4M country pop size at the starting screen.

Another thing to note is that since you’re literally an equal owner in the Qing market due to the customs union, you can export any excess material that Qing owns and you’ll get a ton of shopkeepers thereby increasing the wealth of the poor and middle class and giving you huge trade centers.

Well done mate, a question: how can you keep the number of radicals so low during the whole game? In my previous game their number was always above 70-80% of the population, even though the standard of living in my country was in the top5 worldwide. I always tried to enact laws that dont piss off many Interest groups, my tax rate was in the middle, and many times when i checked, their number increased because of the standard of living.

you can however over pops to see what is pissing them off, usually i find that some luxury good being slightly more expensive than for a country that is actually able to produce it locally is what causes mine to get angry, they dont quite seem to understand that tobacco doesnt really grow in sweden so I can't really get them cheap tobacco until I've fixed the state enough to go colonizing

Sadly universities have at best a minimal impact on literacy; education laws then wealth are the biggest indicators of 'education access' (you can see this under population and checking an individual pop group)
the qualifications given from the uni do help pops to upgrade more rapidly at least

Universities are also a good way to build up your Intelligentsia's political strength, as well as industrialists and PB to a lesser extent. Religious IG also gets a big boost from clergy in universities because there are more priest pops.
I really enjoy going into the political map and seeing how my Intelligentsia might be powerful in Munich but my industrialists have their power base in the Rhineland and the Landowners and Farmers are based in the farms of Brandenburg while the Trade Unions and Petit Bourgeois and Church have their HQ in Berlin because that's where my trade center, universities and urban centre is biggest

the heavenly kingdom is a peasant rebellion that actually happened around the time in-game. In real life, it existed from 1851 to 1864, and it was lead by a man who claimed to be Jesus's younger brother and another prophet, the Chinese version of Mohemmed, if you will.

I wonder, is it possible to get Heavenly Kingdom to industrialize more quickly than Qing? Does their Protestantism help in any way? Could they Westernise more efficiently and then win the war? I haven't played the game but I imagine the Western religion + fewer provinces to manage might make advancement easier.

thing is... westernization isnt really a thing in vic3 but yes logically speaking they would have it easier to westernize if it was a mechanic in the game as european powers would very much like a weak china that is reliant on them and if their entry point into china was more likeminded because of religion it's just a bonus for them
