Even though I've had the RF16mm lens for a few months, I wasn't totally satisfied with it. The first week or two, I was downright disappointed, and thought about sending it back. However, this week, I took it on two very different shoots and it really came in clutch! This lens blew me away with it's sharpness, high-performing autofocus, and the powerful focal length that outperformed the other lenses I had with me. One shoot was during the Fullerton Ghost Walk one night, and the other was during Venice Beach photowalk where I was teaching street photography.

14-35 is my baby, also my most expensive single purchase ever!
@@bsant7 that's the RF? Fabulous. What type of photography do you primarily use it for?
@@WesKriesel landscape, architecture and real estate 🏡 mostly but its very versatile, done a couple of outdoor couples portraiture shoots with it as well, very sharp and focuses super close.
Its also the best way to vlog on the eosRP in 4k all the way down at 14 the 1.6 crop turns it into an arms length holdable 24mm
Nice job Wes I’m considering getting this lens since I don’t have that super wide angle and 299 is hard to beat. My favorite lens is my RF 24-70 that’s on my R 90% of the time. Great stuff sir!
My favourite general purpose zoom lens is the 24-105mm F4L. My favourite prime was my 85mm 1.4 but now it's the Sigma 70mm 2.8 Macro Art lens. For wide angles I do have and love the RF 16mm 2.8.
The RF 24-105 is such a great lens. I think it's underrated and underappreciated. Best "kit" lens out there!
@@WesKriesel …find it somehow boring, besides the fact that it’s formally a competent kit….
oooh @@fragu123 , how can you say the RF24-105 F4L boring ? 🙂, I get awesome shots. Lived on my EOS R for years . Now I have the IBIS with the R5, I can shoot hand held is much darker situation and get sharper shots.
The biggest value for me is the portability of the lens. That has so much value. I love my 16-35, but to have a tiny 16 is very tempting. I have a question on the wobble, is it caused by the IS in the lens? or the IBIS in the camera? Cool video, I like this lens. Canon is making some great budget lenses. :)
There is no stabilization on the lens so I'm going to test disabling the IBIS and shooting handheld to see if it works better. I think disabling IBIS will eliminate wobble.
Thanks for the review, would you say the RF16mm combined with the R5 would be good for very low light interior shots for things such as Cathedrals and dark chapels ?
Yes, absolutely
I might pick this lens up
I can definitely recommend it for photography. What's your current favorite lens?
@@WesKriesel I am using the RF 24 -105 in the U.K. they are gone up in price. The RF 16 I wanted to use it for vlogging 👍🏼
@@TetraEzio The RF 24-105 is a great lens. It's not too, too expensive, but yields really stellar results. I think it's a very underrated event photography lens, or even a product photography lens.
@@WesKriesel it's a one of the first RF lens out on the canon EOSR but a great video lens also.
You can. Its not heavy at all
Favorite all time lens is the Canon EF L-series 50mm lens. Does that count?
Yes, great lens! Just use the EF to RF adapter, and you're set!
Nice vid man.... How was it at 2.8? Can't wait to see the Astro review.
Hey Carlos! Thanks for watching and for the question. I mostly shot at F/2.8 and since it was bright had my shutter speed very high to cut the light at Venice Beach. On the ghost tour, it was dark and at night so I shot almost everything at 2.8, except for the light trails images where I opened up the shutter for longer. I'll double check in Lightroom but I would say it was good. However, I didn't shoot any real traditional landscapes where you might scrutinize sharpness of the scene from corner to corner.
This video looks great. What lens did you film this on?
Thank you for asking. This was the RF35m lens, which is probably my favorite RF lens.
It's a shame that Canon doesn't release firmware update more often...if ever. 🤠
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment.
Hey Wes, Thanks for this!
Were you able to test it out for Astrophotography? Was looking into it for that purpose :D
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment! Unfortunately, I have not been out to test this lens for astrophotography.
@@WesKriesel Thanks for getting back to me. Would be looking forward to that review if you ever make one ;)
If it’s ok to tag along, I’d love to go on a photo walk with your group sometime
Hey John! Sure!
Is this the best lens for vlogging? Is it stabilized?
It is not stabilized, but it's a great focal length for vlogging. My recommendation for vlogging is the RF15-35mm lens.
is it good against bright light ? Flare resistant ?
Great in bright light. I noticed very little flaring .
@@WesKriesel Thank you for your response 👍
