      Yeah, for me the most surprising part was the response we got from iKamper. So many people say the post purchase customer support is outstanding, and I guess my expectations were too high. In retrospect this probably could’ve been resolved if iKamper would’ve sent us an alternative mattress solution, like an Exped or something similar.

    You are supposed to stack one mattress on top of the other before closing. That is why it is leaving a mark on the pad. Most recommend keeping a window open on each side to allow the air to escape as you close the tent.

      Thanks for the vote of confidence! We went with the roofnest FalconXL but CVT makes the same style tent in different sizes and better colors IMHO. So far this is our favorite style RTT. The only con is the weight of the XL. We have our eyes on the GFC super light next.

    Guys, thank you a bunch for your honest review. Also, thank you a lot for putting this video out. I agree with you it
    is very frustrating nowadays to find genuine reviews of the product pretty much anywhere you go. I salute your for
    taking the time to make this video. After hearing your story I do feel disappointed cause I really would like to give
    them a chance and this is really a premium price for the tent. It is not cheap and receiving this level of customer
    service is unacceptable. Damn, you can buy a good used car for this kind of price. Do you mind me asking what other products did you study, please, see if you can share.
    Also, which mattress did you end up buying to ensure the tent was closing, was it comfortable? regards.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We started with the first gen Smittybilt Overlander XL. I loved that tent but we kinda wanted to try some other tents out. We sold the Smittybilt and got the iKamper. As you can see from this video the iKamper Skycamp was a nightmare for us.
      To make it close properly we ordered a softer memory foam from Amazon. We cut it to size and that did the trick for the most part. The best option I have seen to date if you must have this tent is buying your own Xpeds. They are inflatable mattress. You will need two, which will cost you another $700 dollars on top of the $4K for the tent.
      The good news if you do this is you will be able to leave bedding inside the tent when you close it. The bad news is your tent is now closer to $5k dollars.
      We got a roof next Falcon XL next. We love this tent but it is a bit smaller than the tent sizes we are accustomed to.
      Hope this information helps.
      Thank you for watching commenting and subscribing!

    Thank you for the honest review. I was looking at this tent for my jeep and been reading allot about the mattress issue and closing..
    I dont understand how hard it can be from an engineering standpoint to just make the overall shell 20mm higher and solve this issue all together! With 20mm higher shell, they can add a bigger foam mattress AND it will close without an issue..
    Instead they do this... oh well!

      @KRTLyfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the R&D department really dropped the ball on this one. As more people come forward iKamper might do what’s right eventually, and offer a solution. Personally at this price point I expect the best of the best. Especially when there are products out there for a quarter of the price that deliver as advertised. CVT, Roofnest, Smittybilt…

    So at the 3:18 mark, your iKamper sits lower than my iKamper Skycamp mini sits and I do not have anything extra inside my tent. I even did the mattress swap with memory foam which helps it close easier and still I spend quite a bit of time getting it closed up. Great and VERY informative video!!

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So that time lapse you are referring too was after we did the foam swap. It made a huge improvement in getting the tent closed but we still had to force it.
      I also suspect for some reason ( this is only a theory) temperature seems to have adverse effects on this tent. That night when we camped and it was 20F we literally messed around with that tent for almost an hour the next morning trying to figure out why it wouldn’t close.

    • @GX470adventure
      @GX470adventure 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KRTLyfe I believe temperature makes a difference. This weekend I was in North Georgia mountains and Sunday morning it was low 30's and it took me 40-50 minutes to close mine even with the mattress swap. The day I swapped my mattress it was in the 60's and it closed very quickly. The last time I had struggles closing mine was about a month ago it was in the 20's and lack of coffee and patience I'm sure didn't help haha. Thank you again for the honest videos and honest feedback. My iKamper is for sale now and I'm going a different route haha.

    I had the Skycamp 2X (2 person) version and I added a 30mm mattress topper to soften it up for my wife. We were able to close it with all our bedding in it, which consisted of a dooner, sleeping bag, fitted sheet an 2 full size pillows. It was tight but doable. I think issue with the 4x is that the section that folds over takes up alot of tge space. I sold ours afterwe took delivery of our offroad camper trailer.

Sounds like the V 1.0 is definitely more roomy over the V2.0... I bought mine through bigtents outdoor in Canada and their customer service was dang good. We did lol we showed several times lapses of us trying to close it.
      You are right we should’ve showed a focused clip on the actual cable and hook.
      Getting the braided cable over the hook on ours was very difficult with out someone else pulling or applying pressure on the cover of the tent. Closing the latch after that would take an unreasonable amount of force (body weight) To the point that area where the latch is mounted would start to flex.

    Interesting how some companies have such bad customer service...!! Glad I found this video it gives me some things to think about before I spend so much money on a RTT.
    I guess to try and get the tent depth down they have sacrificed too much room inside the tent. I noticed that the gas struts have crushed the mattress and therefore this would put unnecessary stress on the gas strut hinges, along with making the lid harder to close.

I never had a problem closing the iKamper however, was unable to close it with my deflated air mattress and sleeping bags. (2ea). By adding the carpet I have enough room to close the iKamper with all my bedding placed on the far side of the entrance. Mattress deflated of course.)

      Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing. We hade a very good experience with the Roof Nest Falcon XL. Depending on your family size it is an excellent choice. We also really like the Smittybilt Overlander XL, it is our personal favorite minus the set up time. iKamper just released a revised Skycamp. They literally addressed all of the problems we had with ours and they included a part in the product video where they open and close the tent with a timer and no tricky edits like they did in their old product videos ( very misleading). They might be worth a second look but of course we are very hesitant to spend money with them again.

    Ordered mine through REI today, will be picking it up next Tuesday, no six week wait there, plus a 10% dividend for 2022. Can't wait to get this bad boy installed, and to start putting it to use. Thanks for sharing your experience, sorry things didn't go well for you guys with this tent. I have watched multiple other video reviews of this same RTT, and this is the first one that I've seen with this issue. I'm hoping mine doesn't do the same. Too bad to hear about the unresponsiveness of iKamper. I feel you could have left out the parts in the video of the other users calling you guys frauds, as that is just something that happens on social media in general and really has nothing to do with the performance of the tent itself. There area few reasons this is the first Vlog you’ve seen addressing this. I won’t get into all of them but there are two main reasons.
      Most people that get this tent already have in mind to spend another $700.00 roughly on Exped mattress.
      The other reason is iKamper goes above and beyond to hide negative feed back.
      We are one of a handful of reviews that actually paid out of pocket for this tent.
      Since we have no contractual obligation to iKamper we can speak our minds freely.

    Thank you, I was leaning towards the iKamper and because of this post and a few others like it, I have decided to go with another company. It is a shame that a company that charges the money they charge, has to set up a FB Page that discredits legitimate complaints, that right there is shady and a big enough reason not to buy their RTT. I believe it is laziness in the R&D part along with the cheapness of the company to use a top of the line mattress. They remind me of contractors that sell themselves as the top of the line and use the cheapest parts to do the job, it never ends well.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is exactly what they are, the thing that baffles me the most is how certain users make so many excuses for the tent and the mattress. When you can go buy a Smittybilt for a quarter of the price that will actually work as advertised out the box. Now that we have used 3 different tent designs the Roofnest Falcon XL style is my favorite. CVT also makes the same style with better options IMHO. This design is the easiest we have tried so far especially after that awful iKamper debacle. If you need the space and are on a budget the Smittybilt Overlander is a great buy. You can find them slightly used sometimes for as low as $800.00. I really got my eye on the GFC racing tent. It is a bit smaller but so convenient and easy to remove from the vehicle.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thanks for watching, the information I got was from the iKamper FB group. You can go on there and read the thread we mention in the video. One user in particular really did his homework and measured and compared various iKamper Skycamp tents. From that information we concluded this.
      The Skycamp V1 is very easy to spot. It doesn’t have the world map on the ceiling. The V1, however, is the easiest to close and can fit bedding in it. The differences between the different manufacturing dates Version 2s is harder to tell. We ordered ours in October and it was very very difficult to close. We also met someone local to us that had a Skycamp from the same timeframe that also had difficulties to say the least. He also sold his tent.
      I can’t 100 percent say the date range and source of the problem, but we have been contacted by many people that recently ordered the Skycamp 2.0 and had issues with the tent. I don’t know the internal details of
      iKampers manufacturing process for different regions, when final assembly happens etc.
      From what I gather tho the parts are all made in Korea, may or may not be the same factory and then shipped to different regions for final assembly. The issues could be originating from the front end or the back end of the production process, but with out inside information I can only speculate.
      I suggest trying your tent, because as far as I know you can’t t send it back now. Maybe you got a good one, if you got a bad one tho you will definitely know it. I hope this information helps you out.

    Sorry you didn't have a good experience. I have had mine for 2 years and my family has camped in it 20+ times. It is a phenomenal tent and I looked at ALL of them before purchasing this one. It was expensive and well worth every penny - we haven't regretted it for a minute and particularly when the weather has turned gnarly while out in it. The quality of the construction, hardware, mounting brackets, struts, cover and tent material are excellent - as is the design and how it functions. It is very sturdy and extremely well made. Maybe you should have purchased from an authorized local dealer, like I did on the front range in Colorado. The service has been exceptional and so has the product. I have never had an issue opening or closing the tent and it is as easy to do both as it is supposed to be and represented to be. For those who allow one person's negative experience to influence what RTT you buy and spend your time in, you will unfortunately buy an inferior product and miss out on a very good investment/experience. Great video. I wonder what the difference is between the older version 2.0 and the newer ones. Perhaps due to the high demand for rooftop tents and the backlog of 10-12 weeks, in some cases, maybe they went with alternative materials as Covid as created shortages across the board. Either way, this is a horrible experience to have after waiting as long as you had waited for a $4,000.00 tent. iKamper should have handled this better instead of sending a BS generic email that did nothing to help.

      @@KRTLyfe I don't blame you guys one bit. BTW thanks for the recommendation in the other iKamper video...for the updated mattress. I got it today and tried it out for 5 minutes and already it makes a world of a difference. The mattress in the iKamper sucks unless you like sleeping on what basically amounts to a lightly padded brick. If it wasn't for you guys I wouldn't have even spent the money on this updated mattress because I didn't think it would make much of a difference for the money, but it does. My hips are thankful! Thanks again.

    I've been looking at RTT's for a long time now and kept coming back to iKamper...definitely not now!!!
    I am more interested in the Desert Armor Tank (great price, package, and lifetime warranty!!) or the Roofnest Condor XL.
    Both brands are made in China, but I can't find negatives on either.
    However, to speak bluntly....piss on ikampers trash product. They pay a TON of money on advertising and positive marketing! Hence the price tag. Very similar to name brand athletic wear.
    Either way, I think I will be ordering a Desert Armor RTT. The complete package and warranty are just too good to pass up.
    Thanks again for both of y'alls time and information.
    I'm not affiliated with either/any company. Just a country family in the Badlands of NW North Dakota!!!

      Interesting, I’ll need to check out this Desert Armor Tank. We got lucky and found a Roofnest Falcon for sale in our area and I must say it is a much better tent than the iKamper. Especially if you drive on trails that have branches and low vegetation. The Falcon is so low and the design is solid bs the Skycamp 2.0. Hope you find a tent that fits all your needs best of luck and keep us updated!

    I agree with your opinions 110%. Is so sad that after spending what you guys did that they gave ZERO support. It is extremely disappointing that they run and "control" the FB page. To me that is morally wrong and definitely a conflict of interest. I am curious to know what tent you have gone to or are thinking of. I am starting the research process myself. Thinking of the Smittybuilt but i do want a hard shell.

      The Smittybilt is awesome! It was our first tent and still my favorite. We have the Roof Nest FalconXL now and we love it but it definitely lacks the space of the Smittybilt. I think dollar per dollar the Smittybilt is unbeatable. Just my opinion.

    I can understand the problem. I have the smaller one and it took me about 4/5 times to be able to close easier. Ikamper customer service is non existent. I have figured out a way that works for me, but not ideal. I just learned to live with it. May sell after about a year and try something new.

      @@KRTLyfe push all the bulk stuff to the rear towards the left or right (depending on the tents orientation) where there is more room. As you are closing pull both straps at the same time. I know this is an obvious step, but if the sides are pushed in late tent won't close. If the bulk stuff isn't in the perfect place it also won't close. I guess I just got good at doing it. My wife and I also camp almost every weekend. I replaced the stock mattress with an air mattress that is much thicker so now I have to make sure all the air is out before it will close. The closing process now is much longer, but we learned to live with it. At least we get good sleep now, but being able to close the tent in under a minute is impossible. I feel like I've been dupped by all the brand ambassadors. Roofnest is my next tent.

    I was actually looking into getting this one and this info has for sure changed my mind. It’s already priced very high and with bad costumer service ( that I’ve heard from other places also) it just seems smarter to shop elsewhere for now. Maybe the 3.0 coming out will be better, but I guess they’ll jack that price up even more and you still get the bad costumer service.

      Yeah, the thing is we aren’t the only people that have had this issue. We got responses from people around the world that are having the same issue with recently purchased Skycamp 2.0.
      Unfortunately a lot of them are doing what we did and coming up with their own solutions.
      One person even said they have their child sit on top of the tent while they secure the locks lmao!
      However I’m sure a some people have to be contacting iKamper about this issue.
