I like the way the young men are so respectful of Mark and Mark has no airs and takes them seriously as well. As a non-music teacher of 25 years, I know that MK is a Master teacher. So patient, humble and an expert in his content. Joy to watch.

Backstory - Jimi used to be my guitar teacher back when this was recorded. He was approached to be on this since he was a very well known guitarist from the Newcastle area. He was really excited to sit with Mark and play for him. Jimi is an excellent metal guitarist and was a couple years into expanding into jazz. He was pumped to go there and show off his shredding skills to Mark. When he arrived the production staff basically told him he needed to change his guitar tone, use no distortion and slow everything down. The whole thing was filmed after these poor guys had their wings clipped just so they could sit with him so it's not surprising the whole mood was off for the shoot.

I met Jimi back in 2004 and he didn't speak too highly of the whole experience. Mark's disdain for hard rock and metal is evident the moment Jimi mentions his love of Iron Maiden and Van Halen. Jimi is a wonderful guitarist and a top bloke too.

Honestly, I’m not big into full on heavy metal, but I really respect the skills that guys have in that genre, and frankly it speaks ill of Knopfler if he takes an attitude of disdain towards metal or other musical genres.

a little late but watch it again. he made a mistake and did the thing at the wrong part and too early that's why you don't hear the part of the song "way up high" which is where he did it earlier correctly. that's why afterwards mark asked "was that where you did it?". so it's maybe not frustration but disappointment. it could also look like he's trying to hold his laughter but seriously though there's no way you can hold your laughter at that part.

Those dudes were very well respected guitarists in their own right who were established in the industry and with their own styles. They were probably expecting to learn about the peculiarities of Mark's approach rather than having their own technique taken apart and have him tell them the 'problems' with their style.

Good point! Definitely a different way to look at it. I just know if I was lucky enough, I'd have done whatever the man said, you can always take it or leave it later. Just a matter of respect I guess.

I guess if I was on camera I would try to just take the criticisms, but I think I would be a bit worried in the moment that people who see this would view my technique as less than the pro standard I had worked hard to achieve, and my reputation based off of that would suffer. Mark was talking to them like they were learners, rather than this being a meeting of technical peers, and it would have probably thrown me too to be honest.

That's if I was in those guy's positions, as a respected guitarist with a rep. I am nowhere near as good as them and I would have tried to do everything Mark said!

I realise these guys are so stressed playing infront of the master, however could they have picked 3 players anymore average than these guys!

Mark appears annoyed and bored at times. Don't blame him.

Grillmeister Baconator The only guy I ever thought uses it tastefully is David Gilmour. I took mine off my strat years ago. They are such a waste of space.

These kids aren't listening to Mark at all. Especially the second guy with his whamalamadingdong bar!
Dudes, when Mark gives you an instruction you stop what you are doing and do what he tells you, or next time he won't give you any instruction thinking you are too dense to learn.
Why even take a masterclass with Mark Knopfler if you are so full of yourselves?... lol

I'm not a musician, but I think the whammy bar is stupid. It might be good for an occasional trick, but overall it's a tricksy gimmicky dumb thing.
