    There's no video or sound system in the world that can convey the scale of this thing. You absolutely MUST experience it in person.

    What a treat-hearing the National Anthem on the Wanamaker Organ-could have used better brass-but still a thrill to hear! Folks,you can say what you want about Macy’s-but at least they have kept this legacy store-and its organ-ALIVE!!!

    Organ matched Trumpet! Lovely! But be highly careful, most settings like this sounds good but what happens when we're in a room that doesn't have any good acoustics like this?

    "the altered chords played by the organist were out of place"
    Presumably (obviously!) the vast majority of people don't attend high-church Anglo-Catholic services anymore, where it's considered a de rigueur display of an organist's ability to reharmonize an entire verse of a hymn, or two! Doing so heightens the interest in the selection and its message. 5 chords in the National Anthem is nothing at all in comparison.
    Anyhow, nice video, it's too bad the sound of this organ is so hard for amateur cameras/rigs to record. Yours is better than mine but still a bit too muddy.

      @RealRaynedance 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In fairness, the organ didn't sound too much different in person at the time. Muddy as it may have sounded, the brass being played did overpower the organ at times.

    Would have been nice if the horns and organ were using the same key and arrangement.

      I don't think so, the trumpet and the side drum gave it more effect.

    I find it mildly infuriating that Usonians simply write “National Anthem“ as if it was obvious whose national anthem are we talking about. 😅

      The Wanamaker Organ - largest currently operating in the world - is understood to be in Philadelphia, a city widely recognized as being in the United States. So I think it's ok to title the video they way Ian did!

    Peter Richard Conte will never play as fluently or with the range and elecution as the late Keith Chapman. Conte is downright painful to listen to. Sadly, few remember this. With such a treasured instrument, one would hope Macy's would research and hire a true Organ Virtuoso.

    • @Salmagundiii
      @Salmagundiii 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Wow, that's an interesting perspective. I would rate Conte as one of the greatest living organists and organ arrangers. I'll have to look for some older videos of Chapman.

      @fingerstoes316 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you completely. Keith Chapman was superior as an organist both technically and musically. It is very sad that few remember that and if he had not perished in that plane crash, he'd still be the organist at Wanamakers today.

      Honestly, I’ve seen videos heard this instrument in person and there is no doubt that dr kieth Chapman was amazing on this organ I just think that Peter Richard conte is plays this organ how it was meant to be played as a symphony orchestra. I personally think that he is the greatest organist alive.

    • @jakedarmstadter6943
      @jakedarmstadter6943 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And I’m sorry I forgot that you were a virtuoso. If you can do it better than you go apply for a job there. I think that it is terrible for you to say something like that. Peter Richard conte knows more about this organ than Dr Kieth Chapman did because Peter Richard Conte has played the organ for longer. And Keith Chapman never saw this organ fully playable. I am not trying to be rude or mean about this I just think that Peter Richard conte plays this instrument more how it is supposed to be played.

      I agree with the fact that Keith Chapman was a fantastic organist, however I completely disagree that Conte is “painful” to listen to. I think he is a phenomenal organist and a pleasure to listen to. They’re both fantastic just different

    Why do pipe organs seem to always have trouble with timing? Kinda sloppy and never with the beat….

    • @prod.bluemedia

      Have you play pipe organ before?

  • @wallybrown4392
    @wallybrown4392 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think the altered chords played by the organist were out of place, and he definitely was dragging behind the conductor. and I thought only drummers set their own pace and paid very little attention to the downbeat.

    • @Petman1325
      @Petman1325 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Wally Brown To be fair to the organist, he only sees the conductor via a video screen on the console since the organist faces away from the conductor in addition to being on the opposite side of the building.

    • @jamesp8391
      @jamesp8391 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Disagree completely. I agree with petman1325. He’s seeing him on a screen (that probably has a delay), and is also far from the organ and brass, so there’s definitely another delay there. When you have an instrument that big, so far from you, there’s always going to be a delay that messes with you as an organist. It feels like you’re playing a massive building that you’re trying to move out of its own way. A very heavy massive feeling, relatively sluggish. A good example of this is St. Patrick’s Cathedral when they’re playing the rear gallery organ from the chancel console. It’s quite humorous actually how dramatic and sloppy the delay is. St. John the Divine also when you’re using the state trumpet in the back. You literally have to completely block out the sound of the trumpet and play like you’re deaf so you don’t get screwed up.
