If we go back to 2018 and listen to Virgil or Allison give a post-match interview it is all about the clean sheet. We lost the league by one point but only lost 1 game we were incredible that Liverpool side would absolutely annihilate this current Liverpool side not even close. We need to go back to being defensively resilient and feared
You don’t need to spend the most, the two players mentioned in this podcast being Mane and Fabinho were both modest 35 mil signings, value will always win out as long as you get quality, signing 3/4 great players is better than 1 world class unless that’s the last piece of the puzzle
All respect to Kelleher, he was fantastic this year. Honeslty had a mega run of games given he came from the cold.
But World number 1 Alisson gets injured and it’s a massive blow, but it’s stupid goals and mistakes that cost us ultimately.
McGinn might be worse than Bruno when it comes to crying to the ref. Was still moaning about that coming together with Alexis at half time. He does it every game and is never shown a yellow for excess moaning, absolute crybaby.
Cynically, I’d say it’s because he’s not a foreigner + a bit of a hard man so gets a pass from refs and pundits alike
Well we have plenty of time to plan this season. Last season we lost five midfielders and were left with two midfielders with long term injuries and two kids Jones and Elliot. We bring in four midfielders, three who have never played in the Prem with one of them who hardly kicked a ball at Bayern the previous season. Gravenberch and Endo were panic buys. Then the one midfielder who played in the Prem we play him out of position??? Does that sound like a club well run?? We have time to address things this summer
Really enjoyed this debate the issues pointed out are exactly how I and other fans I talk to feel. I think hard decisions have to be made if we are to compete at the top both domestically and in the Champions League. Send Bajectic on loan for a year to play regularly and build himself up we have Endo and hopefully Bajectic can replace him the following season, I would sell Tsimikas the fact that Gomez played ahead of him yesterday says it all, big decisions need to be made in relation to Jones he hasnt progressed. I would have concerns going into next season with the our current front five, Jota's injury and to me Salah is in serious decline. For me a quality DM, CB, RB, attacking midfielder and wide forward player.
Our defensive woes are tied to our poor midfield. Very similar to the worst of last season. Theres no control and little confidence and the opposition after about 5 minutes are pretty much walking through right on top of our defenders with ease.
Id hoped Klopps all-important engine room was getting upgraded not just replaced when Hendo, Gini and Fab went. Instead we ended up with a plucky, cheap hole filler in Endo and an over worked Macallister. A paper weight in Szoboszlai and a lucky dip in Grav. Both Jones and Elliott are of a level to support an established, solid and organised midfield but this group are hardly a combination to build a team around. No wonder our defence is a mess. They cant do it all. It mirrors last season so much.
Partner Mac with a really good, top level DM (dont *ick about anymore FSG, get the cash out!), add in an inform Jones or another quality player and watch how it comes together again.
As much as I resented Klopps overly defensive midfield setup at times during peak times, where our midfielders were always kept on a leash. it worked really well.
Without Klopps ability to make up the deficit in player quality and FSG's unwillingness to buy genuine top level players instead of hopefuls, its gonna be interesting to see how Slot gets on. I can only hope that he can add even half as much of Klopps magic dust to get us into the odd cup final.
There’s been other reasons besides our abysmal form, especially the PGMOL, but we can’t expect to win the league when we’re conceding 41 goals in a league season.
Even the days when we had Mignolet in goal, i think our worst was 52 goals conceded.
That gives a clear indication of how bad our defence has been this season.
Slot needs to rip up that high line forever and make some solid defensive signings. And please sign a young defensive midfielder that prevents us getting walked through for goodness sake.

I think Slot plays a high line but his defensive record is usually the best in Holland. PL isn't the Eredivise though, so who knows how well he adapts.
Not sure you have a clue to be honest, the high line isn’t the issue, Arsenal and city have a high line and barely concede, it’s because they play 4/5/6 players that could easily be centre backs at all times, we play 3 at most and Gomez really isn’t one anymore.
The problem isn't the High Line, it's the personnel. LFC needs defenders who can and want to switch between 2 DEFENSIVE positions (i.e. Stones or Rodri).
What we have are attacking full-backs (Bradley, Tsimikas, Robertson and Trent) and stay-at-home centre-backs (Van Dijk, Konate, Quansah and Phillips).
We don't have enough VERSATILE defenders to switch from 433 to 3-Box-3 or 3-4-3. Matip progresses upfield like a DM, but he's been out since December 2023.
Gomez can play all positions across the back line, but for "the system" to have worked for Klopp this season it needed 4 more FB+CB or CB+DM type of players.
Look at City: Rodri (CB+DM), Stones (CB+DM), Gvardiol (FB+CB), Akanji (FB+CB), Ake (FB+FCB), Walker (FB+CB) and you see why their defence can change shape.
In Tsimikas, Robertson, Bradley & Ramsay are FOUR full-backs whose 2nd position is to play the wing. Then Trent is aiming to be an '8' in central midfield.
That's 5 players who we know won't take a 2nd position on or behind the halfway line, with 2 CB+DMs already injured (Bajcetic & Matip), leaving stay-at-home CBs.
You can predict where the LFC defence is going to be at any moment and where the gaps will open up. It looks like a "defence problem", but it's a versatility one.

You don’t win this league without playing a high line in certain scenarios because pressing high and winning the ball high is a great way of scoring goals and having less shots on your goal.
This isn’t the 90s, you press high and have a deep defence you get demolished every other week like united have been, you play deep if you’re relegation threatened, not going for the league, it isn’t as simple as you clearly think it is otherwise everyone would just sit deep you prat.
This has all just been a waste of time because your tiny brain can’t comprehend what I’m saying but oh well I tried.

Phil blundell is bang on. I’ve been saying this whole time. People focusing too much on the finishing and not the defence. Which is the real reason we ain’t winning this league. A lot of our players don’t have the appetite/ concentration to defend compared to arsenal. A lot of it is tactical too. But having the best gk and best cb we should be keeping way more clean sheets than we have.
Darwin nunes is more to blame than player year of the year virgil.best keeper in world who missed half a season both trent and robbo was basically the same.our defence never played together and to blame the kids who replaced them is crazy.yes we have been wide open but Jurgen sets up the team to play high risk high reward.if nunes scored when he should have and took the most simply chances created for him we would not be 6 points behind.we are talking crazy chances here.mo without pens is also a worry.jotta has been our best forward and played 5 minutes.if cash come for mo now we need to take it.if an Arab club where stupid enough to somehow pay 150 for him and we got 50 for nunes.200 million new rebuild

so good i heard it twice.
Think we are seeing what certain players are now and that’s Endo, who is a 15m 31yr old CDM and Quansah who is a young prospect.
Fantastic squad players with futures at Liverpool but these need to be replaced with world class talent to challenge for the title I feel.
The drop of Szolosz form and lack of quality finishing by Diaz and Nunez is what cost us the league.
First thing Slot needs to do is teach this team how to defend again.

I actually thought the only two that were decent was gakpo and Gomez, everyone else was poor. Subs included.

@@markkavanagh6046 maybe I’m being harsh on quansah because of their first, plus I don’t get why konate isn’t starting as good as quansah has been for his age in the crucial moments against the big teams he has faltered a few times. Elliot I wasn’t impressed with, great set piece for the quansah goal but that was it, didn’t do anything of note and was wasteful with the ball.

I wouldn't be angry at Darwin staying but if a club came in and offered close to what we paid for him, I think it would be a big statement to accept it and go for Oshimen. His pace, work rate and most importantly his finishing would only improve us
Osimihen has the same numbers this season in a poor league
@@Ruscococo1 he is 15 in 25 apps this season with a 22% conversation rate. Nunez has 11 in 35 with a 12.8% conversation rate.
Also important to note Osimhen has had injury issues, played under a more defensive coach and had the whole thing with Napoli's social media account. This has been a bad year by his standards.

I think inexperience leads to bottling. We’ve bottled in every aspect this season. I hate the word but it’s just a simple way of describing what happened. You have to be good to get in a position to bottle and it’s the first season of this new team, not too worried just disappointed

We concede so many because we’re playing a player that doesn’t defend at right back, note how I said doesn’t rather than can’t, remember he was a right winger at youth level, he doesn’t have the physicality to bail out his poor effort/positioning. Our centre back is playing his first full season in the prem (when we have konate on the bench by the way) and our CDM was either endo, who I love but isn’t elite at anything or mac who is both knackered and not a lone 6 in any other team in the top 6, compare that to city and arsenals defence/6 and you will see the issue.
Bang on. We dont act like a big club. (15:00). We're constantly striving for cheaper hopefuls. Klopp couldnt have done much more with what was brought in.
Those fine margins in the CL finals or PLs gong down to 1 point wouldve been settled if FSG has have brought in real world leading talent but not once did they dip their hands into their pockets for Klopp to give him the kind of players he deserved.
Hes had to give so much more to keep the club where they've been because the players arent upto that level. No wonder he's going and looks drained. Pep looks exactly the same as he did on day 1 at City because their players are of a quality that ensures they play at the kind of level required to win things. Pep doesnt have to carry so much of that weight and can focus on coaching.
It makes all the difference.
If Klopp is a rarity and an almost one-off, I can see how we might be back to being a top6 or top8 side for some time to come. We will see soon enough.
Love Klopp but my god can’t wait the Klopp Farewell Tour ends!! It has become a sad and pitiful adios. Arne Slot has serious work in front of him. Something is not right with this squad, the downfall since Manu FA cup is unbelievable.
a change of formation and three/four additions hopefully will sort it. Matip, Thiago going, Bajectic needs to go on loan to get regular game time and come back to replace Endo following year. The fact that Gomez played ahead of Tsimikas a natural right full back shows Tsimikas needs to go. A decison needs to be made in relation to Jones he hasnt stepped up
It’s hard for them too think believe they are at the start of something and then get told in fact its the end. They should be commended for winning a trophy, making a good fist of the title and getting back in the champions league.
End of the day, we concede goals because we've not got a Fabinho/Rodri/Rice player in the team and we've still got attacking full-backs, rather than the hybrid CBs Arsenal and City like to use. Endo had a nice spell of form but he started the season and ended the season looking like a guy from a bottom table Bundesliga side. Unfortunately for us, there's not many top tier holding mids knocking about.
You can't just get any DM in this system you need one who can cover right back areas that is why Geertuida is being looked at Fabinho played right back loads so he could have the intelligence to cover that space
I think your a bit harsh about Endo. He has been overplayed and his legs are gone. I would be very happy to have Endo as a back up or rotated DM. Agree we do need a quality DM
Apparently our priority is a centre back in the summer. We'll do what we do every summer and leave ourselves short going into another season

LIV need a CB as badly as they need a 6. Fwd positions and attacking mid are not the issue.
Not really a CB issue though. No cover for Trent when he comes inside, players are too passive and there's not compactness when the opposition is attacking.
Signing a CB isn't going to fix those issues. Need to sort out Trent's position and sign a proper DM who can get around and break up play.
Diaz and Nunez are massive issues and need to be sold
Paul Senior 100% about Diaz a lot of razzle dazzle, end product consistently poor, selection and weight of pass plus decision making when in on goal.

There needs to be an investigation into what happened after we won the league cos we’ve just been downhill since. Who was making decisions on transfers and systems etc? From last season especially we are so open. It’s like Klopp and Pep thought fuck it let’s wing it. Although Not replacing fab and gini adequately has killed us. Endo and Thiago being the replacements is a disgrace. So happy edwards is back. Just need the backing from Fsg but we all know that ain’t gonna happen. Rocky times ahead.

8:16 Phil our defence is not helped by Klopp playing kamikaze football from the first minute i.e. both full backs spending most of the game in the opposition half.
This leaves us with only three players who are interested in defending which are our two CBs and DM.
Yes personnel has played a role in our poor defending but for me it is more down to the fact that we don’t actually have any interest in defending at any point in a game. It’s really naive and I’m glad we are getting fresh ideas next year.
Hooper is truly the worst official that PGMOL has to offer. And he's screwed both us and City over this year - not sure about Arsenal, but I'm sure there's one kicking around. And you can tell he can't keep up - he's sweating constantly. Looks like I would out there if I had to run with two fully trained football teams.
Unless we sort our defence and midfield being easy to get past we are going to slide down the table faster than Man Utd!
We need to change our set up in defence, Trent leaves our centre backs totally exposed. What Trent offers going forward is far outweighed by how much he leaves us exposed in defence

Macalister has been the biggest disappointment for me, mainly because I thought he would be better!
They've been making the same mistakes since 2020, Diaz saved his bacon when he arrived 2nd half of the 21/22 season. Maybe the coach isn't as much of a genius as I keep being told.
having 3/4 seasons of finishing the league with 90+ points on half the budget of his main rival is pretty genius. He absolutely has faults but we ain't finding anyone whos going to be any better.

Having to overhaul an entire midfield in one window. Losing you captain and vice captain. van Dijk is probably the only starter who has been fit for 90% of the season. Forward players missing sitters every game. And don't even get me started on the amount of game changing decisions that went against us.
