Fasting vs. Flavored water | Which Flavored Water Breaks a Fast? - Thomas DeLauer…
Sweeteners (Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium & Aspartame)
    Sucralose:
In studies, oral dosing of sucralose did not induce a cephalic insulin response - appetite was not affected either. However, the commercial version of sucralose, Splenda, is cut with dextrose as a bulking agent - dextrose is essentially glucose, which elicits an insulin response
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...
    Acesulfame K:
In studies, direct transfusions of acesulfame K increased insulin secretion in rats in a dose-dependent fashion. Studies haven’t seen people orally taking acesulfame K in a fasted state and having an insulin response - yet
    Aspartame:
A study of forty-eight healthy volunteers found no evidence that aspartame has an effect on insulin levels. Phenylalanine is an amino acid normally found in the brain. People with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot metabolize phenylalanine - leads to dangerously high levels of phenylalanine in the brain. Excessive levels in the brain can cause the levels of serotonin in the brain to decrease, leading to depression -phenylalanine levels of the blood increase significantly in human subjects who chronically consume aspartame
    Aspartic Acid:
Aspartame in diet sodas, or aspartame in other liquid form are absorbed more quickly and have been shown to spike plasma levels of aspartic acid. Too much aspartic acid in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as "excitotoxins." They "excite" or stimulate the neural cells to death.
    Methanol:
Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison. Methanol breaks down into formaldehyde in the body, which is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol "is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed.” Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication and causes birth defects.
    Maltodextrin & Dextrose:
Maltodextrin is used as a thickener, filler or preservative in many processed foods - it’s an artificially produced white powder that can be derived from any starch, most commonly made from corn, rice, potato starch or wheat. Although maltodextrin comes from natural foods, it’s highly processed - the starch goes through a process called partial hydrolysis, which uses water, enzymes and acids to break down the starch and create the water-soluble white powder. Maltodextrin’s glycemic index is even higher than table sugar, ranging from 106 to 136 (while table sugar is 65)
Bodybuilders often use it post-workout in order to restore the body’s glycogen and glucose levels - can raise glycemic load, which may contribute to fat storage. However, maltodextrin is processed with GMO corn and, as such, can cause gastrointestinal distress in some people. Although the difference isn’t that much, dextrose is absorbed by the body slightly faster than maltodextrin. The body has to break maltodextrin down from its multiple sugar construction to single sugars, or monosaccharides, which are used by the body for energy and to restore muscle glycogen stores.
    Vitamins (B & C)-
    Fat Soluble B Vitamins:
These are often added (i.e. Mi0) to support energy, but as they’re naturally fat soluble (and B12 is usually in the form of cyanocobalamin) they’re not fasting friendly.
    Water Soluble (Vitamin C):
Other brands, such as Stur, use stevia as a sweetener, which is otherwise safe, but add in vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid. The study from Rejuvenation Research finding that vitamin C & E supplementation negated the elevated Sirt3 benefits that usually arise from fasting - cells were sheltered from oxidative stress. Note on Food Dyes - (Red 1, Blue 40, Yellow 6)
Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 may contain contaminants that are known cancer-causing substances. Benzidine, 4-aminobiphenyl and 4-aminoazobenzene are potential carcinogens that have been found in food dyes. These contaminants are allowed in the dyes because they are present in low levels, which are presumed to be safe.
Lakanto - Liquid Monk Fruit Extract:
Ingredients: Monk Fruit Extract. Monk fruit sweetener is made from extract derived from dried fruit - the extract is 150-250 times sweeter than table sugar, has zero calories and carbs, and does not raise blood glucose levels.

I used to drink diet soda all the time as a kid, and also got severe migraines. My uncle suggested I stop drinking soda, so I did (in 2007), and I have rarely had a headache since then. I learned it's the aspartame ingredient in foods and drinks that causes it. I haven't had soda since 2007!

Regarding this video, could you give us your method for making your own liquid monk fruit sweetener? You said you add some monk fruit extract to some apple cider vinegar (ACV). What amounts do you use and do you add anything else? Seems to me the monk fruit wouldn't be enough to overcome the bad taste of the ACV, no? Thank you again for all that you do!

Ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, purified water, citric acid, malic acid, natural flavor, stevia leaf extract, sodium citrate. 0 calories, 0 sugar, but it does have 1 gram of carb per serving (1 squeeze of bottle). I like the rasperberry lemonade flavor. And I was unaware about antioxidant vitamins breaking a fast. I took them during my 6 day fast this past week. I still lost 8 lbs. And I was already very low carb, fat adapted, so it wasn't just water weight.

You've crushed my heart! I practically live on Stur flavors because I hate the taste of water most of the time. I have been using it while doing Keto and doing my intermittant fasting...so apparently...I was not really fasting. Ugh... thanks for your videos!

A little off topic, but I'm hoping to get in the next Q&A vid with a question about HMB supplementation during a fast for its anti catabolic properties. You often talk about building muscle and protein synthesis, but perhaps you can touch on the flip side of that coin which is arguably equally important, the prevention of muscle breakdown, specifically while training fasted in a state of ketosis.

Just wanted to say thank you. I've been using mio for a while and wasn't sure if it was breaking my fast. I still have a little bit left in the house but I'm immediately stopping the use of it until after my fast stops. I will only use it during my window of 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. outside of that it will be clear water or coffee. I tried to order Lakanto but it says their website is sold out. And splenda zero is at Walmart but they want almost $8 a bottle. again thank you This helped me make a better decision for myself. Keep up the good work. I'm loving the content

Is the Dextrin in Lily's chocolate bars the same as maltodextrin? I was surprised to read that in the ingredients on some of their chocolate!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. I've got this Cirkul water bottle and I've relied on it heavily to get away from soda. But I recently decided to take on fasting to lose weight and have been paranoid that the Sips for my Cirkul bottle are breaking my fast. Even though you didnt specifically call out this product, the close up shots of the labels on the approved flavors have eased my mind about the water flavoring that I use. Thank you.

what are your thoughts on apple cider vinegar and sea salt together (and water )? would this break a fast?

    • @tblub.9270
      @tblub.9270 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Depends on your reason for the fast. I believe ACV contains protein which mean that it would probably halt autophagy. Now if that is not the goal and youre only interested in weightlosss, then no. However, if body recomposition is something that you'd want , don't drink the acv during your fast.

I don't use any of the flavorings, i alway use a plant based, or use lemons, limes, acv or just salt water, mainly because i knew nothing about them, now its a little clearer thanks Thomas 👍

That's sad to hear about the two mios, however what about the stevia leaf mio? Many of the ingredients you listed are not in this version of mio.

Not all MIO products have sucrose acetate isobutyrate (SAIB). Some have additional sodium, some with/ without sucralose, and some without SAIB. Just look at the ingredients listed at the side of the package and look for SAIB.

Thomas, I’m wondering about “natural flavors” that I see in many ingredient lists. Can I trust that a sparkling water drink with “natural flavors” will be ok during a fast?

Hi I’m a new subbie 🙌🏾 and new to IF I’ve been doing the 16:8 and it’s going well so far. I’ve recently purchased some liquid flavour drops from ‘my protein’ the cherry flavour has the following ingredients: Cherry Flavour: Flavouring, Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Sweetener (Sucralose), Concentrates (Radish, Carrot, Blackcurrant, Sweet Potato, Apple, Cherry). And 0 calories across the board on the nutrition section and even when I scan it on my fitness pal. Would you say this still could break a fast?

With sucralose in question for years I'm finding that it does more harm to the body than previously thought... But I thought it would spike insulin because of how it's made and what it does in the body. I'm a bit confused now... And good sales pitch on lakanto

Original (not flavored) Topo Chico ! Carbonated magical Mexican mineral water from an underground Spring in Monterey that taste like little razor blades hitting your tongue. Taste amazing with lime and salt. Nice chaser for espresso drinks. Rarely found outside of Texas, however, you can get it at Whole Foods.
