  • Did my first ever solo expedition. Packed up the yak and brought along my new Hennessy Explorer hammock. I got to say that kayak camping was a pleasant experience. The trip was a quick one-night expedition in Bjørnefjorden, Western Norway.
    The kayak is a Boreal Baffin P2, and the hammock is a Hennessy Explorer Asym Zip.

    I have used a Hennessy Hammock for over a decade. Best nights sleep I ever get is in that hammock. I have hung it off rock cliffs, between trucks, trees, burned out buildings, inside my house.... the mistake you made was using the mattress.
    Few tricks to staying warm in cold weather.
    2 pillows. Place the pillows under your body and a good cold weather sleeping bag and you can weather horrible weather that can kill.
    You will get to the point that putting up the hammock will only take 1 minute.
    Ohh yeah I always bring ear plugs when camping. Nature is overtly louder then most people are prepared for.
    Also ... I highly recommend the kelly kettle.

    • @Ocean4Life
      @Ocean4Life  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrMDK187 I had to look up the kelly kettle, never heard about it- looks good!
      You’re right, that mattress wasn’t the greatest success... tried with no mattress in a warm part of the summer and that was bliss.
      If you lived around here I’d ask you to come along for a trip so I could pick up a few tricks :-)
      The installation is taking shorter time already. So convenient compared to a tent!!!

    Hammock sleeping is the only way I can sleep (spine issues).
    If your still hammock camping try splashing g some cash on the Amok Hammocks from Norway 🇳🇴. Now THAT is a fantastic sleep.
    It’s like like a bed and turns into a seat also with its adjustable straps.
    It is a nightmare to get into though but no regrets once your inside one.

    Very neat video editing. Good for summer etc... synethetic bag. Cheap, dries quick if gets wet. Also can use bag liner only, with small blanket.
    I use a windburner MSR.... very quick, valve adapts to altitude and cold, as long as u use msr or similar fuel works good in cold. Use a long spoon... only thing it dosnt simmer easily. Can turn off, cover , leave a few mins, then,reheat while stirring.

    What a wonderful spot ...... and an even better restaurant. May in the north when warm & sunny is just heaven. Duncan Ritchie Now that the boat is sold we’re learning to enjoy the coastline in new ways. I have to say this was a real treat, even if the sleep was short. I definitely came back home with a rested mind. And thankfully I got to do this last weekend as we’re now back to 8 degrees and 🌧

      Ocean4Life Ah, I wondered if you'd sold it. It's said that the 2 best days in a sailors life is the day he buys a boat & the day he sells it. Even so, you'll always miss it but not the expense. Good onya. It takes a few days for the body to adapt to a hammock. No mat needed unless its quite cold... cld use zrest ( store on top.of rear hatch). Ive done quite a few trips in the whitsundays, and other tropical areas. Open sea can be a challenge... but i can always do a wet entry roll using the paddle float . And i have a plb...

    • @Ocean4Life
      @Ocean4Life  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not having a buddy means that safety net of another person is gone. You have to rescue yourself and you have to carry everything in your own kayak. But sometimes I just prefer solo. Life is so busy that once in a while it’s good to just enjoy your own company 😀

      I've got a boreal baffin P1 and a P2, as well as a feelfree fishing yak. For me the baffin seems like an ok compromise between fun and practicality. Camping by kayak is great, you don't need to carry a heavy backback :-)

      Outside Ambition just watch out for how much stuff you need to bring. The rear storage room is fairly low and has a bit reduced volume (to give the kayak better handling for rolling re-entering, less push in wind etc). It’s a compromise

      Jason Roberts I’m in Norway, the west coast. Nature is INSANE but we have too much cold wet dark weather ... I lived in Parramatta 2000-2001. Travelled in a swag from Adelaide to Darwin. Too many venomous snakes for my liking though 🐍
