Imagine if someone came up to you and asked if there is an enemy to hedgehogs in our country. How would you answer?
If the first thing you think of is a human behind the wheel, you're going in the right direction. The dozens of dead hedgehog bodies I see on the roads every year always make me wonder if people are doing it on purpose. In fact, hedgehogs often cross my way, too, but they're always pretty easy to avoid, as are e.g. marching toads. You just have to look out.
But if we focus only on the natural predators that prey on hedgehogs, we don't have many options. Literature says that hedgehogs can be threatened by the European polecat, in whose burrows spines are regularly found. I have no experience with this myself, but why not. Personally, however, I can think of a different animal. Bigger, more majestic and more feathery...
In the last video clip, I showed you what it looks like in an eagle-owl's nest, when the youngsters are still defenseless and mom is guarding them most of the day. But move forward in time a month and everything is different on the rock. The nest is full of nice plump feathered bogeymen, the parents keep an eye on them from afar and regularly bring them catches that don't even need to be torn into smaller pieces anymore. And because on May 29th the wildlife cameraman got lucky, in today's video you can watch the struggle of the chicks with a typical eagle-owl's food - a hedgehog.
Yes, you read that right. Hedgehog skins are one of the most common food scraps lying around eagle-owls' nests. Although the spines on the back of the hedgehog provide sophisticated protection and really deter most predators, they don't stand a chance against the sturdy claws of an eagle-owl. The adult will pick up a defenceless hedgehog like a piece of cake, the cubs will conveniently eat the insides out and only the discarded skin will remain on the ground. If you come across such spiky rubbish in the countryside, you are sure to be in an eagle-owl's territory.
In the video you can also see the ornithological rings that Ivo Hertl gave to the young eagles. I'm gnashing my teeth a bit, because I would enjoy the footage more without this decoration, but scientific research takes precedence of course :-)
Oh, and not to forget - the video contains a bit raw scenes, so theoretically it may not be suitable for extra sensitive natures.

Taky mě napadlo, že ty zvířata někteří dacani přejíždějí s nějakou zvrácenou radostí. Já jezdím 25 let poměrně intenzivně a ještě nikdy jsem žádného zvířecího chodce na silinici nepřejel a že jich bylo. Stačí sledovat prostor před sebou a včas reagovat.
