    what has always frustrated me with this dance is how the main step seems to repeat itself after 3 beats (2 eighth notes, followed by two quarters) while almost every mainstream country song is in 4/4.

    • @imatifoso2782
      @imatifoso2782 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You are correct that the music is in 4/4. The means there are 4 quarter notes or beats per measure. But the dance measure is 6/4, that is, 6 quarter notes or beats per phrase (my term to help you understand). Put another way, each phrase is 1 1/2 measures. You repeat the phrase so you take 3 measures to get back to where you started. Total 12 beats. If you learn fox trot, swing, polka, or other 4/4 dance, it is the same. Even triple time swing is based on 4/4 even though the beat is more complex. The phrases do not match the measures. You dance to the beats, not the measures. Hope this helps.

      alfredoking14 As a beginner, work with slower songs. "All My Exes Live in Texas" or "Mercury Blues" are two to begin with. There are websites with lists of songs you can two-step to. Some sites even list the tempo.

    This is the Two-Step done in the UCWDC...which is basically made up of 100 different weekend-long events around the world (most done in the USA). Each event is a weekend that is filled with Country Dance Competitions and Contests. They compete in 8 different partner dances...and yes, Two-step is the most popular by far.
    That said, what he showed is the basic movement. If you ever actually watched them dance...it doesn't look like this...becuase they are not basic dancers.

    What a horrible explanation... 2-Step Is done to 4/4 time music. There's downbeats and upbeats. Two step dance dance on the down, up, down, down Beats... With heel leads... heal ball heel heel...
    Without framework The leader can't lead and the follower cannot follow.!

  • @ToolsnFire
    @ToolsnFire 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The easy straightforward understanding of 2-step is 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, not quick quick slow slow, that's more confusing, since it's a six count, not a four count, in sync with the music beat.
    Be simple. one two three hold five hold, it's all there. quick quick slow slow aint all there

    • @clarisawheeler
      @clarisawheeler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree. I can hear the beat. I can't count and think about my feet. I can think about my feet and tell them quick and slow and stay with the beat. I count when I'm doing zumba or a class of some sort, but I don't want to think that much when I'm dancing.

    • @ArsiniC11
      @ArsiniC11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds like the same thing. Based off your description, and starting at count 2, it goes something like 2,3,hold,5,hold,1 or quick, quick, slow (hold, step), slow (hold, step)

    This is the best-produced dance instruction video I have ever seen. (I've not seen super many of them, and those others have all been amateurist.) Ultra-basic dance concept here, but really well presented. Bravo!
    From my perspective as a long-time social dance instructor, this video should have been titled either "Texas Two-Step", or "Country-Western Two-Step". The "classic" two-step uses a different footwork rhythm, but "two-step" in the U.S. in my understanding does now refer to this three-count, four-step basic pattern. If you really want to learn how to dance, go out dancing at good halls with good music! There are a lot of great social partner dances out there!
    The two-step, of whatever style, is a great social dance!!! Thank you for this really fine video!

    It's important to point out in each & every video that there are ONLY two (2) dance styles done on ANY social Dance Club/Lounge anywhere in the World. Spot/Rhythm & Progressive/Traveling. The congestion Problem (s) we all run into these days is that Dance Instructors do not continually reinforce (Over & Over/ Ad Nauseum ),...... All Spot/Rhythm Dance Styles should be done in the CENTER of the Dance Floor,......Progressive/Traveling Dance Styles are done in the two (2) outside lanes of the Dance Floor. Slower Progressive/Traveling Dancers on the inside Lane & the faster moving dances in the Outside FAST Lane. This way, we can ALL perform our dance of choice at the very same time to each particular Music Selection. Thank You!

  • @candacesmith5329
    @candacesmith5329 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This is not a traditional two step, this is a modernized dance class two step. The two step is traditionally a diagonal /side to side step. Fast. Fast, slow. I don't know how you would dance the way they teach in this video because two stepping music is three beats. One, two, and three-ee. Add one more fast step to the dance in this video and you've got a west coast swing. Fast fast fast slow slow. This is what I have learned dancing in two stepping bars. Just sayin'.

    • @DanceRuidoso
      @DanceRuidoso 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To be honest the bar dancing is the problem. Many people side step, very few understand line of dance, and even fewer understand a 4/4 count. This is a traditional two step in its most basic and best form. As he said there are regional variations and of course they all think they know "the right way to do it".
      But if there is any "right way" this is exactly it. Stepping to the side is basically drunk cowboy dancing, dancing backwards and bumping into everyone to impress your gurl is drunk cowboy dancing, pumping your arm up and down to the beat of the music is too, not caring about line of dance is drunk cowboy dancing.
      There are a hundred ways of doing it wrong and a few to do it right but this video is a failsafe way to do it right.

    • @imatifoso2782
      @imatifoso2782 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Robert Kelly Both are correct. There is Two Step (QQS) and there is Country or Texas Two Step (QQSS). You will also find regional variants. Anyone who tells you that such and such a version is "wrong" or "not traditional" has seen only a few forms. None of them is "wrong". They are just different. As you progress as a dancer, you learn other variants and, often, take steps from one to include in another. The Michael Thomas web site teaches a variant different from that taught by Brett Long, for example. In the old videos with Valerie Moss, she is doing a basic step more like polka basic. The Joe Baker video is QQSS and includes nearly 40 steps.

Wherever you do it, the Correct way is to keep your eyes open and adjust your steps as needed to avoid colliding with other couples.

    If it's six count it makes more sense to say it 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, that makes easy sense to the brain and to the feet.
    Lot's of people have difficulty applying the concept of quick quick slow slow,... since aren't the first three steps at the same time in between?: 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold. Doing 1,2,3,hold,5,hold, you're directly counting each beat with no vacant pause,... 'hold' takes the vacant spot in quick, quick, slow, slow,... after the two slows of course

      I'm 5'10" and have danced (and still dance ) with guys who who are 5'5" (and some even shorter). It's still possible to reach your arm to her shoulder blade, unless the leader is 5' and the follower is 6'7". (!)

    easy way to explain L.O.D. is nascar racing , i use it all the time

      ...which would mean nothing to people with no interest in or knowledge of Nascar. Clock-wise and counter-clockwise are concepts understood internationally.

    Like every TH-cam video, too much talking! Nobody cares. Teach the dance

      Everybody else cares -- at least, the people who care about learning how to do it right and who aren't attention-deficit. I've taken classes from Robert Royston and he is a SUPERB teacher...not to mention a hoot-''n'-a-half with an over-the top sense of humor.

    From what I've known, the time between first and second steps, and, the second and third steps, is the same time.... "step step step pause step pause", not "quick quick slow slow", that's silly. When I did like what this guy shows, time was off basic six count, girls were NOT diggin it. It was terrible. Do one two three hold five hold,... magic,.. no problem,.. per the appropriate song.

      QQSS is correct. But the first slow refers to the pause between 3&4th steps, the second slow refers to the pause between the 4th and 1st step. You are right there are 3 steps a pause and the 4th step and pause before starting over. No pause between 2&3.. 2 steps=2 beats then 2 steps for 4 beats . Pause between 3&4 and 4&1- rinse and repeat.

      But it just doesn't 'feel' right to say quick quick slow slow,... because the third step is a quickly stepped step,.. it's not a slow step. And hence 'slow' means: gap step gap, - they way I use it: Quick quick quick..slow..quick quick quick..slow..quick quick quick..slow..quick quick quick..slow.
      Works fine, I don't see any evidence of that not working in practice and theory. And it clearly makes sense to the body's feel and mind.

      ***** I understand what you mean. It feels right for me because I was taught that way and teach that way. The first slow is a prep for slowing down and skipping the 4th beat. But hey whatever works for you. I dance with some pros and they can get so technical its not fun anymore. Dance is art and fun for me thats all. I do ballroom, latin and country. I dance hours every week: country two step, nightclub two step, waltz, swing, east coast swing, west coast swing, cha cha, salsa, blues and polka, etc. I don't compete I just have fun and if you ever get to Ruidoso, NM come by Win Place & Show we have live music 364 days a year!

    The first music of America was Native American music, followed by religious music made popular by the slaves singing of hymns. The roots of county music lies in Appalachian folk music which is a combination of many influences included African and European (Irish etc). It also borrowed heavily from blues. So, yes, perhaps it is an amalgamation of the diverse music backgrounds of America, but not America’s music. Nice tutorial though.

      so what does aren't mean?... a contract is used when you shorten a word and the letters omitted are represented by an apostrophe ... learn English... am not ... the contraction would have been amn't.... is everyone in America complete morons?...
