  • The FIA and WRC (World Rally Championship) have put new regulations in place for the top-level WRC cars. It's a major change from the 2016-2021 WRC car, but just as exciting thanks to the new hybrid- electric drivetrain and 500 horsepower they produce. We break down the anatomy of the Rally1 cars and explain what they're all about.

    I saw a comment on Reddit over why they think WRC has been shrinking in popularity:
    ”With most of the wrc behind a paywall for spectators it makes it a hard sell for many manufacturers and big-name sponsors, what kind of return on investment are they going to get when the only people who will see their cars and/or advertisements are a few hard-core fans and those lucky enough to live on or near the stages?”

      @@rallybeast You can see it in the past decade. Manufacturers are leaving the sport for different reasons. Years ago you could buy yourself a car with a little bit WRC blood in it. Impreza STI, Mitsubishi EVO, Polo GTI WRC look, Escort Cosworth, Focus RS, Octavia RS and so on. Todays WRC cars have no looks anymore of a sportive street car so manufacturers are selling less sportive cars. Another reason is that manufacturers are investing more money in developing electric cars than in motorsports. As long as wrc is with petrol engines I don’t think there will be more manufacturers coming back. I’m a petrolhead, not a fan of electric racing at all but at my age of 48 and following the World Rally Championship since the late 80’s I only see less competitors every year. I hope it will change but I’m not so positive. Sorry for my bad English, not my native language, but I’ve been to more than 30 WRC rally’s all over Europe and a few hundred national and local rally’s so the sport is close to my heart.

    When the new Rally1 were presented, I got the idea that the connections between stages were made 100% electrically. But they are mostly done with the combustion engine. Even in the service and refuelling parks, often you see them use a combustion engine. I feel that they were not completely honest when they presented the specifications, the power reserve it's not big enough to make those. Great video btw.

      i've watched rally1 cars in transit on public roads here on youtube and they were definitely using ICE instead of the electric motor.
      i don't think it's wise to expect drivers to reserve battery for transit because not using the hybrid power will affect their times on the stages.

    • @IlkkaPrusi
      @IlkkaPrusi ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The hybrid system is used to recover braking energy and to provide boost in the stages. They do use electric in service parks, and there is sometimes a "demonstration" stage where use of it is necessary. I think it was never realistic option to use electric between special stages as the liaison-stages can be long.

    I saw the Rally1 cars live. It was amazing. They are really fast and you can hear them scream from miles away. But i feel like the concept was kinda doomed to fail. There seems to be no interest for new manufacturers to join. Probably because developing a car with 2 different engines (Gas and Hybrid Unit) is expensive. Even if the rest of the car is simpler. Also I got the feeling, there are more breakdowns and crashes than before. Which makes sense, since the cars are heavier, have that E-Boost, but Handling, aero and Setup options are worse

    • @rallybeast
      @rallybeast  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Those are all good points! At least they didn’t go full electric like many of the rallycross series, because that would have absolutely destroyed fan interest. The 2016 cars had a lot of breakdowns at the beginning as well, and since the teams had less time to develop a car, it’s bound to have issues. There have been a lot of rumblings behind the scenes with a couple of manufacturers, but nothing has materialized yet.

    • @GIddyUpRetep

      The hybrid system is plug and play. Another company makes the exact same units for all the teams...I think they are randomly issued as well.
      If I am not mistaken, the hybrid system also connects relatively straight forward to the drivetrain to simplify the design and costs. I can't recall the specifics, but I think WRC has a video that describes the whole process. Overall, it was a pretty well thought out plan to keep costs lower and have a level playing field.

    I think some of these restrictions make no sense. The differential is a massive step backwards. Everybody developed WRC cars with fancy aero, suspensions and drivetrains already, which makes handling better. Why get rid of it? Going full electric would probably be less hassle for manufacturers, because hybrid systems are way more complex.

    Cut costs by restricting aero and banning center differentials, but im pretty sure those hybrid batteries and motors are WAY more expensive than some metal and carbon fiber.
    People need to realize that innovation doesn't happen by authoritarian regulation and legislation, it happens when you let people conduct themselves freely.
    If the FIA actually cared about innovation and a level playing field, they would take away almost all vehicular restrictions, but put a budget cap of 500,000 on every car. That way, the manufacturers are building to a price point, but they are free to build the car that they want - the best car possible. But instead, we get regulations and regulations. 1.6l turbo engine with a 36mm restrictor and a hybrid power unit, no more diffusers, reduced suspension travel, no center differentials... Wheres the variety and innovation there? It should tell you something when it's the WRC and theres no Subaru, Peugeot, Citroën, etcetera.
    The FIA is a joke.

      WRC 2 would be much faster if they weren't disadvantaged by the deliberate use of restrictors to ensure they don't regularly beat the WRC 1 cars ( even though they do sometimes). The WRC 2 cars run a 32mm restrictor, the WRC 1 a 34mm restrictor, a 5 speed gearbox, higher weight, very little aero, etc.

    Always nice to see good quality rally content so thx. IMO, Rally1 is mix of good and bad. The simplifying of drivetrain and cutting cost in half is great but the hybrid system is a marketing gimmick - it’s pointless, expensive and adds another part to break. With all the interest in trying to get on the F1 grid you’d think WRC would be able to find a way to get some new teams to join Rally1, often two or more drivers have trouble of some sort and we’re left with like six drivers in top class and that’s sad.

    • @rallybeast

    The limit of amount of spare parts (transmission, engines...) is a very good thing to stimulate quality and durability in the world of cars where often is stimulated planned obsolescence, consumism and quality is often crap.
    I don't like the limits on the cyclistics of the car (frame, differential, suspensions...) producers should be able to implement the best ideas and R&D to make better, more advanced cars.
    Developping better hybrids is a good thing, awaiting safer EVs (🔥🚒🚑 litium 😒).
    No need for monsters ☠️ with ultra high HP, focus on balanced cars with the best all wheel drive aspects.
    Huge Toyota fan, durability and quality, best customer service and communication ever 👍

    When the car is on electric mode, isn't the engine just charge electric motor?

      Yes, but they also have regenerative braking and anytime they're in service, they plug in.
