    Pro Gear is an important game in the history of Cave and the DNA can be seen in Akai Katana which is one of my favorite Shootemups of all-time, horizontal or otherwise. I play the original 360 port of that game. A touch of Akai Katana's DNA can be seen in Rolling Gunner. Try playing all 3 games in chronological progression.

      Funny you should say that. I just got Akai Katana and the first game that came to mind was actually Rolling Gunner - maybe moreso even than Progear.

      Rolling Gunner is an amazing game. I hadn’t gotten around to playing this yet but I’m on it tonight. So glad I watched this.

    The biggest issue with Progear is that Cave messed up the X and Y movement due to the oddness of the CPSII resolution. The art is done in 4:3 ratio but the mechanics are programmed for the strange widescreen CPSII ratio. So it either feels off when playing in 4:3 or the artwork looks horribly stretched but the gameplay feels correct... not the best. It's far less noticable on a traditional CRT display which has been adjusted properly.
    That asside it's a classic and I do enjoy it but it is a wee bit odd.

      Wow! That explains perfectly why it always felt odd when trying to play it both ways. Always thought it was down to poor emulation which is why I never bothered to persevere with it, even though wanting to. So it’s a case of stretched 4:3 which is a pet hate or deal with it and have less janky mechanics.👍🏼

    Great review. I think this is one of those games that gets better the more you play it, but doesn't give the best first impressions, particularly scoring (which is awesome once it becomes second nature but kind of awkward until that point). In contrast, the other 4 games you mentioned felt instantly enjoyable.

      @ShmupsOnSwitch  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the thing I still don't get with the scoring is the push and pull with rings / stones. I'm pretty sure I read or saw there are ways to use one to boost the other and points at which you can kind of 'cash in', but, to be totally honest, I just can't quite get it.

      @@ShmupsOnSwitch Yeah, I'd recommend watching the commentated live run by Meriscan at Shmup Slam 2 or the guide by BareKnuckleRoo, both here on youtube. They helped me understand the system better.
      The rewind feature in CAS is great for experimenting with those mechanics as well :D

    Im curious bout this as ive heard good things, but I hate not being able to see my hitbox and having to guess. I see its visible in the plane select screen,what good is that? Give it to me in the game or make it an option to turn on.

    I have to say man, I've been really digging your reviews. I have watched/listened to you for a while now, probably since you started and now you've become content I get excited for. What I mean is, I don't scroll past and save for later, I click as soon as I see a new vid. With that being said, i think all of your points are valid on Progear but I think if you give it more time it will grow a lot on you. Once that scoring clicks you won't be able to put it down. Thanks for the informative entertainment.

      Thanks a lot! And yeah, I definitely plan on playing it more. Often it just takes some random moment for things to click and then you start enjoying a game on a whole new level. Will definitely come back to it one day.

    It’s great to see this review of Pro Gear from you and I must admit I pretty much agree you.
    It’s got some beautiful visuals but they do seem very disconnected from the action, more so as there are no environmental impacts to be wary of.
    This is very much the same for Akai Katana but the visuals do blend better for me, giving it a far more striking look!
    Cave did opt for a similar homing shot like this in Katana but the mechanics on offer in that title are far more involved and really come in to play when scoring is involved.
    Great review 👍

    • @ShmupsOnSwitch
      @ShmupsOnSwitch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you mean about the visuals in Akai Katana. Hard to say why, but even though they kind of do the same thing, they just seem to come off better / more holistically.

    Game might be THE best visually of any shootemjup, it's mindblowing to look at, so much detail, so much chaos on screen. I can't play it though. WAYYYYYY too difficult for me. I have no idea how you prevent the entire screen from being full of bullets and i see no way to manouver through it. This game is just death after death after death after death for me, like ill play for a few secs and die. Not fun.

    Never did manage to understand the scoring system, and moved on to other shmups that felt much more playable (to me) like Ketsui, BG, and the Mushihimesama games. Definitely one of the Cave's lesser games imo.

    It's funny, this is actually one of my favourite Cave games (for a while it -was- my favourite). But I definitely appreciate an alternate viewpoint on it.

    Oddly enough, I originally got this game because of the soundtrack (mainly Senatus). I’ve been meaning to get around to trying it, but I was always unsure of the system. Thank you for explaining it!

    I’m really glad you showcased this game. I have it on the Capcom Arcade collection and hadn’t gotten around to plying it yet. I’m really glad I watched this as I’m going to dig into this immediately (starting tonight) and give it a serious play. Lots of plays that is. ;)

      Amazon Japan will deliver to the UK. Or you can get it from Playasia.
      There's also just been a Limited Run edition announced if you don't mind waiting.

    Nice review. I didn't feel like this one was one of Cave's easier titles though. The later levels really kick my butt. That and I'm never sure of the hit box.

      I think it's about where the pilot's head would be. One of them has a yellow/blonde spot you can use as a reference (at least I think that's what it is).

      Oh, hey, agauante Argentina!
      (I know everyone (outside France) was supporting Messi yesterday, but since Scotland almost never qualify, I've always had a soft spot for Argentina since I was a little kid at the World Cup. Amazing game yesterday!)
