- In the Ninth Episode of The Best Star Wars Character of All Time Series, I go over the "The King of Manipulation", Chancellor Palpatine. In Part 2B of this Emperor Palpatine Character Analysis, I talk about the qualities and events that make Emperor Palpatine such a special character in the Prequels and Original Trilogy.
I'm sure everyone has someone they picture as the Best Star Wars Character, and I know I have quite a few. My goal in this Star Wars Video Essay is to show how many great characters there are and why any one of them could be considered the greatest star wars character of all time.

Who is the smartest character in Star Wars and why?
Palpatine, maybe.
Thrawn
Thrawn, in both Legends and Canon probably.
Beside the obvious, Githany maybe. The only thing holding her back was the blindness of the Sith-teachings to that time which she recognized a bit to late
Palpatine by a long way
I get the dislike of Jar Jar, I get the dislike of "I hate sand," and parts of the prequels don't hit the highs of the OT, but Palpatine's master plan is brilliant and brilliantly written. Great job with the videos
My dad calls him Laughing Boy when dueling Yoda because of all the cackling. His sheer unmitigated glee from finally letting loose and fulfilling every dark dream of revenge he ever had on the being he had to hide everything from for decades. His entire life’s work is fulfilled and he’s already won, he’s having the time of his life fighting Yoda basking in the Jedi’s failure.
Indeed, Yoda was irrelevant because only the Chosen One could end the Sith.
The funny thing is that Lucas even said that Yoda knew he had already lost even before his fight with Sidious began because it was at that moment, Yoda understood that the Sith had grown and evolved for a thousand years while the Jedi didn't. Sure, he had to try and fight anyway, but he knew the outcome. Sometimes you can't win in the sense that kill your opponent, all you can do is survive by escape.
Just a thought that not only is anakin choosing palpatine over windu because of their personal connection and palpatine offering an actual argument, but Mace's words (which are the same as palpatines earlier) actually prove to him that the sith and jedi aren't that different.
He did the same as Anakin but without any Palpatine persuasion and manipulation. They fell down.
@@lamaahruloma4270 Pretending Mace wasn’t 1000% right in that moment is wild
There is zero way any Jedi survive if Palp leaves that room alive
You’re missing the forest for the trees. From Anakins point of view, Mace DID prove Palpatine right.
Auto generated captions are awesome. 6:15 "Only then, will you be strong enough with the dark side, to save Batman" 😂😂
Palpatine told Anakin only one has achieved the power to cheat death. And then, told him, if he kills all the jedi, only then will he have the power to save Padme. He really pulled the wool over his eyes. And she died anyway, by Anakins hand no less. The Self Fullfilling prophecy.
Palpatine wasn't trying to run, that's the clear thing, he's not trying to escape Yoda, he's drawing Yoda in. Palpatine has already won. He is completely victorious, and he knows he will win, but he is also still careful ultimately to maneuver everything to his advantage. He moves to the Senate, where it is to his advantage. It's also made clear, ultimately, that Palpatine is the victor of the fight with Yoda, that he's just toying, really, with how casually he takes most of it. He knows he's won, and while he is thrown off and threatened in Yoda's last attempt to fight Palpatine, he remains laughing and gleeful over it. I think the novelization best describes this, how Yoda grows to understand he had lost from the beginning, not the beginning of this fight, but from the very moment he was born as the Jedi had never prepared themselves, even when the Sith made their return, for the new Sith. They had been planning to fight the old Sith, the previous Sith, to battle in armies as they did in the Old Republic, to wage war and to rely on the same techniques and power and code that they had of that time. The Sith had changed, the Galaxy had changed, and so the Jedi had lost long before Sidious ever ignited his lightsaber, for not only was Sidious more powerful in the Force, but he drew from the masses, and had maneuvered everything into his exact demands. The only hope was to escape, to preserve what could be.
Exactly. And how did Luke manage to turn Vader back to the light? By appealing to the emotions and attachments the Jedi constantly warned Anakin to avoid.
I loved that novelisation so much!
@@elmermedina1713Exactly.
I was never a fan of Star Wars, but Palpatine is a brilliant character and for me made Revenge of the Sith by far the best movie and even made me appreciate the other movies more.
Agree, Episode III is great.
@@gumdeo, not only episode 3, the prequels are great. The story is told in three episodes and is only interesting in the way it is told. Episode 3 without episodes 1 and 2 is pointless.
Palpatine didn't plan to loose against Mace. Lucas said himself that Windu won the duel... Other that that, good analysis
Yep Palpatine lost legitimately, only used Anakin as a get out of jail free card… quite literally I might add.
The speech at the end of the movie is such a big middle finger to the jedi, guy just is straight up wearing a sith robe kekw. Great video also, very well thought out and written
Alien "Lord sidious said we would be left in peace"
Vader "no, Lord sidious said I was to leave you in pieces"
Commenting again for the algorithm. Still think your channel is super underrated.
Lol, you're too kind
I wholeheartedly agree. I went to subscribe to his channel and I noticed there were only 941 subscribers at this time. He deserves a lot more given the quality of his videos.
@@KraziKazi But he/she is totally right
While I think the greatest Star Wars character is Kreia from the expanded universe, Palpatine is still in the top 3 and easily the best among the films and other canon material. Hes the embodiment of evil yet you can't help but like the guy despite his lack of any redeeming qualities.
Palpertine is the best starwars character ever put to screen by the best actor to ever portray him.
Will you be doing an analysis of Count Dooku in the forseeable future? I really like his character and i think he is underrated
My only disagreement is that the Emperor did love Anakin. Not, more than himself, but he did love him. Psychopaths often love their children, but not more than their own plans or desires.
At 4:30 omg plot twist of the century. Anakin is Darth Vader? The way palpatine stretched out the delivery of the name it was like it was supposed to be a surprise
Great video and an interesting study. I liked your use of the popular saying "all roads lead to Rome" (back in part 1) and also the saying that "the ends justify the means" , witch is the philosophy of the Jesuit order (the military power of the Roman Catholic Church). It is almost like these films parallel the decline and fall of the Roman republic, and rise of the Holy Roman empire (Europa's darkest hour). Your last point about drawing parallels with Palpatine and the Devil hit the nail right on the head. Excellent observation. God bless you and keep up the good work.
this is a fantastic series. some great points you made and it shows what a genius Lucas is.
Fantastic video, yes! Every single line palpatine utters is fantastic, George writes an incredible villain.
Couldn't agree more!
As someone who wants to create my own story someday and adores Star Wars.
Loving these character analysis, l look forward to part 3 and the many more to come.
You deserve more subs this is such a great series.
Thank you so much, I appreciate the kind words! I just want to do the story and characters I love justice
@@KraziKazi Oh l think you are, got me excited for certain characters for sure.
Same
Good Luck with your story, my friend 👍
Your analyses are so spot on and a great joy to watch. Can’t wait for more!
I'm glad you like them, and there will be plenty more to come!
It's obvious...PALPATINE killed Padme. There's no way he could have Vader dividing his wants and focus between himself and Padme. You can see the smile on his face when he informed Vader of not only her death but the lie that Vader himself killed her.
Bravo yet again!!!! The Star Wars community needs channels like this
Hey Krazi, after you finish up with Palpatine's Character analysis do you think that you could do Anakin/Vader's Prequel/Original trilogy Character Analysis next? Do you already have an plan on which Character you'll do after you finish with Palpatine?
I'm still holding on to Anakin/Vader, after Part 3 for Palpatine, Obi-Wan will be the next character in the series. And that will probably also be a multi-part analysis. But no worries, Anakin/Vader will definitely have his time to shine.
@@KraziKazi Cool, I was hoping for Luke or Obi Wan to be analyzed soon anyways.
This was a great series, Man. I was hyped for each episode 🤟🏽
I'm glad you've been enjoying it, and there will be more to come.
This analysis was excellent. Palpatine is the ultimate master of manipulation and the BBEG of Star Wars.
Great job as usual.
Thanks! I appreciate you
The story of the prequels is basically summarized in the line:
What if the Catholic Church gave the second coming of Jesus to Satan, in a silver platter
The problem with that description is that the assumption is that the Republic is a functioning, almost paradise before the events of the Phantom Menace.
It wasn't.
On Tatooine, Citizens of the 1000 year old Republic live in Slavery on a planet controlled by the overtly Criminal Hutt.
On Naboo, the Trade Federation - basically a Transport Conglomerate - first Blockade and then invade a Sovereign planet.
Meanwhile, in the Galactic Senate, the self-same Trade Federation have at least equal Representation to the Sovereign planet they invade.
Palpatine MAY be the one counselling and facilitating this invasion - but who gave the Trade Federation a voice in the Senate? While the enslaved Citizens under Criminal control on Tatooine are both voiceless and hopeless?
Or ya know how the Pharisees, Jewish officials, and romans treated the first coming of Jesus lol the “dogma of code” and “chosen one” and “prophesy” make it pretty clear George might’ve had a little inspiration from the greatest story of all time.
@@michaelodonnell824 when has the Catholic Church been a paradise? I’m confused as to how you read into that assumption haha
@@michaelodonnell824 I think they meant the Jedi Order is the Catholic Church in this metaphor but that’s just my opinion I could be totally wrong
@Farb, Except that the Catholic Church is not represented in the Star Wars universe, as Lucas has explained many times in his interviews he was mainly inspired by Buddhism for the Jedi. But the catholic spectators, lobotomized by their stupid and lying religion, are not able to see anything other than a reference to the only thing they know. The reference to the devil is there only because he represents the absolute bad guy, the universal baddest character possible not a reference to Catholicism. And the rather vague similarities to the birth of Jesus are only there to introduce a universality that includes all religions. This is the goal that Lucas had in mind, as he explained.
Palpatine: "To cheat death is a power only one has achieved, but if we work together I know we can discover the secret."
Anakin: "So you're telling me you don't actually know how save my waifu. Oh hell naw m'fker."
Anakin: *ignites lightsaber
15:10 "...So I threw the Senate at him! Hahahaha! The WHOLE Senate! Hahahaha"
Loving these analyses, great work
Glad you like them!

“With thunderous applause “! Yikes ❤😂😊😅😬😳😱😱

So many people miss that Sidious threw the fight with Windu. Completely ignoring that dark siders as powerful as he, constantly dick with their victims. When I first saw ROTS, I thought the turn was too quick. In the years since I've realized how much Anakin was manipulated up to this point. By the time the Clone Wars movie came out 3 years later, ROTS was my favorite prequel
Yeah, and many will go out of their way to convince themselves that Windu actually won because George Lucas said so in the commentary, ignoring the fact that it would make no sense for Sidious to actually try to win that fight.
Windu beat him in a Lightsaber Duel but it didn't end when Sidious had his back to the wall. I thought him begging for his life was legit.
@@jeffreymeehan3116 Windu didn’t beat him, knowing what Sidious is truly capable of he absolutely let Windu win. He was not legit begging for his life, as shown throughout the trilogy and the clone wars Sidious is an amazing actor and got right back to the lightning the second Anakin chopped Windu’s hand off. It was simply Anakin’s last test.
@@erikstrickland96 That sounds like a bad interpretation.
@@jeffreymeehan3116Why exactly? Everything I said is completely consistent with Sidious’ character and power level
Don't forget why we are stronger then the jedi sidious because we are not afraid to feel we embrace the wide spectrum of emotions from the hights of transcended joy to the depths of hatred and despair
FANTASTIC closing line haha. Well done man. Well done in this whole series!
That last line in this video gave me goosebumps
thanks for these videos. hope to see your channel get more recognition, you're making some amazing content.
Your videos are genuinely amazing and it’s insane you don’t have 1 million followers already. Keep it up!
You are extremely talented. These video essays are 10/10. Keep up the good work!
Found your channel yesterday, watched about half a dozen character breakdowns. If ever there has been an earned sub, it is now. Fantastic work
Fantastic analysis have my comment for the algorithm :)
Didn’t really give Vader a second chance more like a punishment. The Suit had many flaws in its design making it was difficult for Vader that is not to mention that the suit was not capable of standing lightning so it made Palpatine able to best and control Vader in other words man planned ahead in case Vader confronted him in a one on one fight.
Palpatine actually eventually allowed Vader to construct a better suit, but Vader refused saying his current suit fuels his dark side.
I’m so glad I stumbled across your channel. Balanced, detailed, thoughtful analysis - and I’ve only watched the Palpatine eps. Great!
Absolutely loved this series!!!
How the hell don’t you have more subscribers it’s outrageous. Keep up the good word it’s so nice.

Excellent videos and very well narrated
great video
incredible analysis!
Love your videos. Keep it up!
Really nice here
I've been hooked since the beginning. Subbed!!!
any plans to make part 4 analyzing god-tier Palps in IX?
Not letting politicians play into your fear to trick you into giving up your freedom for safety rings hella hard currently =_=
That's an eternal political principle. Politicians playing into fear isn't a "this generation" thing. It's a "flip open a random page in a history book, and you're guaranteed to find it" thing
@@hebercluff1665 Oh I know, it's just that people always seem to think "it can't happen here" and that's a dangerous mind set.
@@TheRyujinLP that's why people need to study history on their own, with the intent of knowing how people are. History classes nowadays are just indoctrination courses.
I am glad that you called the Jedi Purge what it was: Genocide. For 25,000 years there were Jedi. In a day those 25,000 years became a rumor. They never happened. Ask Han Solo. It was the first Genocide of Palpatine and Skywalker's era. At the minimum, another six would follow.
The first genocide in the orginal lore was against what would become the sith, making the so called "heroes" in the jedi more of a lesser evil than actually the representation of good. Therefore transforming the stereotypical story of good versus evil, into more of a complex and intricate epic that mirrors our own reality. A reality where everything isnt oversimplified as black and white like shown in most stories. One of the many reasons why the orginal EU is better then most, if not all of the "canon" material that replaced it
I love the series man; I personally would've called this one "The Puppet Master"
Your videos are truly great!
The arrogance of the Jedi is what lead to their undoing. The belief they were always right. ObiWan actually says " only a sith believe in absolutes" ...but the Jedi believed in the "absolute" of their own righteousness. Satan's biggest power is the ability to couch his lies on a big obvious truths, and PALPATINE was a master of doing exactly that.
I loved the videos. Nevertheless it is annoying that at times the sound gets so low so one can barely hear.
Nice
Obi Wan Kenobi next
This is the best character ever in starwars
Man such a well written tragedy. I could only wish for an alternative Revenge of the Sith where Anakin chooses to follow the light and reject the dark side despite knowing the faults of the Jedi.
Brilliant analysis
Palp is the GOAT
ok but when do we get a Maul episode
Ah, Part THREE
0:00-8:40-12:59-20:00! “Democracy dies in clapping “ yikes ❤😂😊😊🤩✨⭐️😬😳😱
10/10
Wow
Could you please do one on dooku?
🐐
George Lucas is a genius!
PALPATINE says..."once more" the sith will rule the galaxy... Once More!???
How about a video about the previous time or times the sith ruled and how their rule was defeated?
Who defeated them, How were they defeated?,How long did they rule?, And what sith ruled.
KOTOR rings a bell?
AGLORITHM BE APPEASED
You're the best James! lol
The way religious people can relate...
1:10
All that work just for 20 years
It was a good run lol
14:00-20:02! Yikes ❤😂😢😅😅😅!
MEEP
Padame did only fall in love with Anakin after he tells her he murdered the women and children sand people so he must have thought killing younglings would really get her going. Talk about getting your signals mixed up
Palpatine still did nothing wrong. :)
Definitely not part 3...part 2b
Good analysis, but the prequels were still awful
