Physicist here, I really like this driver. The shape is legitimately good, about the best aerodynamics shape you're going to get. All of the vortex generators and other fluff seen on other drivers don't work, a smooth shape like the back end of an aerofoil is the optimum. The driver face, I'd been saying for a while they should look at optimising the face to make the ball come off at the same speed all over. Thats what they've done here. Not sure how well it works, but its one of the only things I could think of to theoretically help mishits (like "speedfoam" just better). Frankly I'm now at a loss to think what else I would do to improve drivers beyond these models, no other gimmicks or tricks actually make a difference in the real world. I like it.
@@xxpatssoxfanxx I mean hes a golfer reviewing golf clubs. I can't really complain about that. That's a big reason why I came in with little golf knowledge and a ton of engineering, physics, and aerodynamics knowledge - to fill in the gaps and point out when its marketing fakery as it almost always is. I'll check it out, but I really do think its important for just a plain golfer to use the clubs as everyone else will be using them during a review.
Clubhead speed for SZ was 0.2 faster than normal but ball speed was 1.4 slower. This means you didnt have the same smash factor with the SZ-not surprising with it being more difficult to hit. Interesting then that you got the same total yards of 307 with both. Makes me think that SZ can perform even better if you can manage to get solid strikes on it.
Once again you've proven that newer isn't always longer or more accurate. You've denonstrated the importance of proper club fitting, especially for an efficient club shaft that 'digests' your swing for improved energy retention, release and repetitive accuracy. Outstanding presentation sir!
Result: Same driver, different color and marketing claims. You just hit the Epic slightly better in the test thus the tiny difference in ballspeed and carry :)
Rick, your reviews are the best "go to" on TH-cam. Every piece of golf equipment I have purchased in the last 3-years has started with watching your reviews. I very much appreciate the thoroughness and unbiased nature of your reviews. One thing that would be great is if you could bring back your mid-handicap reviews. I suspect a large part of your audience are in the 10 - 20 handicap range with driver club head speeds in the range of 85 to 100 mph (as opposed to your 115 mph). (It is awesome watching you carry your tee shots around 285 yards :-)) As to your question, if I had to choose between the SIM & MAVRIK with my pocket book, the answer would be neither as it doesn't appear that either is better than many of the 2019 driver offerings. Both clubs are CDN$700 here in Canada. Personally, I am going to stick with my fitted PING G400!
I don’t really look for club head speed in a driver i only look for forgiveness and in that case a Custom fit is so important. I did my first custom fit last year and i was fitted a Tensei CK pro White TX. My misses went down a lot more fairway hits led to a lower score!
Love the honesty. Find a driver you like and stick with it for at least a few years. The Mavrik is really the Rogue replacement, not the Epic Flash replacement so it is probably better than the 2018 Rogue. That being said, they made their 5 yard claim against the Epic Flash instead of the Rogue. Well done.
Rick , Just wanted to say I’m new to the channel and love the content !! Getting back into golf soon ( lay off 4 years due to injury ) and I excited to have your reviews help me get onto some new gear soon. Appreciate the great review and info ! Thank you
Your videos are getting better and better each days. Relax, to the point and honest. Sadly most big companies are trying to make new clubs each year claiming new or better "technology" to increase their sales.
Rick, forget the golf clubs... you have absolutely the best golf swing I have ever seen. Absolutely loaded with power and looks built for accuracy. I am subscribing in hopes you sell instruction material.
This just proves that clubs don’t change much within 1-2 years. I would save my money and get an older model at a discounted price. I think this was one of your best reviews yet! In my opinion. Looking forward to the next reviews!
Given that I bought a Callaway Customs Epic Flash in July last year, there was no way I was buying a new driver, but this was good to watch and know there is nothing being missed!
I love these honest reviews! The 2020 drivers so far all look like great clubs...if you’re playing a driver that is 5 or 6 years old. The tech doesn’t change enough year by year to warrant an upgrade unless you have extra cash and just want the newest club. Just tried a sale price M5 vs. my current 2017 M1 and it was slightly better but not enough to spend $400.
The skirt has returned..... all drivers used to have a crown, a face, a sole and a skirt..... then we shifted weight down and back creating a club that only had the face, sole, and crown...... (max and sub zero) ..... run out of ideas so let’s look at the years 2001 onwards for inspiration..... should I just get my old callaway c4 back out???!!!
Nice review Rick. You are the ONLY unbiased Pro on TH-cam. You put your customer (viewer) at the heart of your channel and have not been taken in by the easy money of club manufacturer sponsorship. This is where the others like Pete 'Snooze' Finch; Mark 'Top Bloke' Crossfield and 'Me and My Boyfriend' have made huge errors of judgement. In the long term subscribers will turn away from these other channels as the reality hits that basically there content is just one long infommercial!
All the manufacturers ought to be using you to test their golf equipment. Rick is a very creditable hitting machine this as always was fun to watch thanks for putting this up.
Another good honest review from Rick Shiels - one of the few voices to be trusted in 2020. Even TXG appear to be juicing their numbers claiming 14 yards between last years M5 and the SIM which is ridiculous! Even worse is the fact they claimed 15 yards between M3 and M5 only a few months back. They've also been caught removing negative posts about TM products, so all in all it smells of sponsorship. Sigh.
2020 drivers are looking very gimmicky to me, aesthetics looking a lot less professional and geared more towards branding to catch the eye... kinda “corny” if you ask me. 🤷🏻♂️
I have watched a few reviews for new drivers now and I think the most important thing for us amateurs Is the consistency of the strike and how far the ball will travel on an off centre hit, clubhead speed and balls speed is for professionals. So with that in mind I think the best driver available at present is the Ping G410. In every TH-cam review it seems to be the most consistent performer.
Great video. Very entertaining, fair and relevant format. Keep challenging the silly claims being made by the manufacturers Rick. They still get good exposure via your channel and the message in most cases is that whilst the UTD gear is no better than last years models, they are still solid products. The good news about the release of the Mavrik is that the Epic flash range should now be a bit cheaper for your average golfers to get their hands on.
I love my Epic Flash Sub Zero, and at the price point of these drivers now, it's going to be in my bag for a while. Great test! Shows just how similar these "new" drivers are, and the price point is going to keep more people from upgrading year to year.
I bought a rogue last year and loved it. After about 10 rounds the head cracked where it met the shaft. Called Callaway and they sent me a brand new epic flash. I was a bit disappointed until I hit it. All the distance rogue gave me and much more consistently straight hits.
Got fitted for a driver today, told them I have no brand preference and to give me whatever the numbers speak to. They recommended the sub zero for me and I’m nowhere near a tour player 😂
yeah, that's an odd blanket statement coming from Rick. I only swing driver about 100 mph (less if i'm feeling stiff, and up to 105 if it's hot and i'm really loose), and the sub-zero epic flash was the club for me. I do usually hit around the middle of the face, but i tend to not get the best attack angle, and the SZ works fine for me. I average about 260-270 yards including rollout with it, and i hit a little under 60% of the fairways i play.
I am definitely for new driver this year and very keen to see the results comparing 2020 v 2019. I do love your videos and comment as they are and should be. Honest and truth showing the numbers. I have stuff descission to make which driver to choose. Definitely the one I am choosing will be fitted, no doubt there. Thanks again for great video
Literally just purchased the Mavrik 8/18/2023 😁😁😁 as well as Cobra irons & in the process of purchasing a 2021 cobra tec 4 hybrid & a cobra ltdx max 3 wood 😁😁😁😁😁😁 Very happy with the irons & learning the driver but extremely happy because I'm just learning!!!
Club head speed is really the product of all the energy in the body's hinges being multiplied in sequence, minus the energy waste or leak attributable to opposing forces both inside and outside the body. This means the fastest club head speed will be achieved via the proper timing and sequence of the release of those hinges, the joints, and not from how much Force or power is supplied by muscle exertion. Another great video, Rick
No I was hitting it only 50 yards 30 years ago. Now 275-285 carry with new driver. It has to be the driver nothing to do with not being 4 years old anymore
My theory is that a driver you've had 2 years will probably lose 5/10 yards due to shaft and face wear... therefore the new driver will go 5/10 yards 'longer' **logic**
Awesome video as usual. Showing that you don't have to get a new driver every year. Waiting at least a good five yrs. To get new clubs is so comforting to the clubs that I have. My clubs are great, I was allowed to increase the shaft of all the clubs. Gives me the height and distance combined that everybody wants and looks for. My club are the Thomas golf custom built and fit clubs
Rick, thanks for review as I went with cobra extreme, and one thing I noticed and several others, + handicappers at that, asked anybody get that to go left? I said no I can’t , and others can’t as well and I’m using lite shaft. Since this review reveals the epic longer, not by much buy I’ll go with mav max cause almost $100 cheaper than epic, can’t believe still carrying a high price for older driver!
Crazy thing is I tried all three plus the SIM and Cobra SZ and the Mavrik Subzero was by far the best for me. Same shaft and setup you are using I was getting 2200rpm and about 5 yards farther than the others with a tighter dispersion. I can't explain it, I'm only a 105mph swing speed 5HCP golfer and for some reason the setup you hated, worked great for me.
Once again, no real difference between this year's model and last. If it doesn't benefit someone at Rick's level, it's unlikely to do anything for the average club golfer. My wallet is remaining firmly closed!
Peter Molyneux his efficiency was also down in the Mavrik head vs the epic flash. 1.39 vs 1.42. Clubhead speed up, forgiveness is higher for only losing two mph ball speed on strikes not quite as efficient. Human element always makes these reviews tricky, cause unless you’re hitting them both the same, how can you say which is better?
There’s simply just not much left the manufacturers can improve on year over year. The face of the clubs have all been at the legal limit for some time now. I’d be interested to see if there is much difference on off center hits. I’d rather lose 10 yards to be able to hit it straighter.
Great video, brilliant review and comparisons. I like the honest reviews you do on new clubs, stops people wasting money on new clubs that aren’t any better👍👏
Ok so interesting this one. From what I understand Callaway are saying that epic flash face was super hot in the middle but left a bit to be desired on off centre hits. Mavrik is supposed to remedy that but maybe the middle is not quite so hot now but off centre is better?? It is interesting that your ball speed was less with a faster clubhead speed. Obviously this can easily be dictated by strike location. Seems like most TH-camrs have now stopped showing strike location on quad but ultimately strike will impact ball speed, spin and ultimately distance more than a new face or aerodynamic shape etc.
This is actually the most valid comment. I would be interested to see if we could compare strike locations on the face. from the data he showed and the fact he said that he felt drives were more accurate with the Maverik makes me think that the poorly struck shots still had good results.
Well what coincidence. Get notification on this review, and an e-mail from Callaway about the Mavrik. Perfect timing and good information! The Mavrik Max seems somewhat similar to what I’m currently hitting now the Callloway FT-IQ Tour.
*Question* - If you had to choose between SIM & MAVRIK what would you pick?

That's what I was thinking- Epic was slower club head but higher ball speed, with the same face (almost).
Slightly better 10 times?
Deep up Stranded Creek hahahha good one
Love the honesty. Find a driver you like and stick with it for at least a few years. The Mavrik is really the Rogue replacement, not the Epic Flash replacement so it is probably better than the 2018 Rogue. That being said, they made their 5 yard claim against the Epic Flash instead of the Rogue. Well done.
I’m most excited to see how this will help the markdown of the previous generations of drivers.
Rick ,
Just wanted to say I’m new to the channel and love the content !!
Rick, you need to bring back the head to head, grab-n-smash vids you used to do with the new release drivers!
Rick, forget the golf clubs... you have absolutely the best golf swing I have ever seen. Absolutely loaded with power and looks built for accuracy. I am subscribing in hopes you sell instruction material.
This is why I love and trust your reviews. Totally honest, completely unbiased, data based outcomes. Great review Ricky, keep em coming!
Love it!! Based on your results from this and the SIM it’s obvious we as golfers should save our money and play last years models. Thanks Rick!!
Another great review, now back to bed it's 3am in Mich, USA. Worth it though. 🏌🏽
This just proves that clubs don’t change much within 1-2 years. I would save my money and get an older model at a discounted price. I think this was one of your best reviews yet! In my opinion. Looking forward to the next reviews!
I don’t know why I was so excited waiting for the results between the two at the end lol how sad is my life
Muff 007 im excited too, i haven’t got there yet, it’s the little things sometimes :/
Given that I bought a Callaway Customs Epic Flash in July last year, there was no way I was buying a new driver, but this was good to watch and know there is nothing being missed!
So what you're telling us Rick is that after taking Mavrik out on the course, you've lost that loving feeling.
Rob Biles ...and now it’s gone... gone... gone.
Rob Biles .... Talk to me Goose.....
I feel the need Randy ….. the need for speed. Can't wait to see what you do with the MAV.
Rodger.
Thanks for the honesty. Good review.
Your videos are great Rick! They really help us sort through the snake oil. Much appreciated.
Disclaimer: Just because it didn’t go further for Rick, doesn’t mean it won’t go further for you. Get fitted folks.
Yes with your current driver not this money grab..
Absolutely love your reviews. You are always objective and honest. Thank you Rick.
RS: "Yea......super computer" hahaha, you're funny Rick
Thanks so much!
@@RickShielsPGA You're welcome. Keep up the good work and great video content. No doubt you can grow to 1m+ subscribers in the next 2-3 years.
This definitely swings faster, another great job by Callaway
All the manufacturers ought to be using you to test their golf equipment. Rick is a very creditable hitting machine this as always was fun to watch thanks for putting this up.
Callaway marketing must really like Top Gun.
They did the same thing with Star Wars Rogue
Good catch
Another good honest review from Rick Shiels - one of the few voices to be trusted in 2020. Even TXG appear to be juicing their numbers claiming 14 yards between last years M5 and the SIM which is ridiculous! Even worse is the fact they claimed 15 yards between M3 and M5 only a few months back. They've also been caught removing negative posts about TM products, so all in all it smells of sponsorship. Sigh.
I’m meant to be taking the dog for a walk guess I’ll have to postpone for 17 mins
haha same!
Brilliant Video/Review again Rick. Great Job mate!
2020 drivers are looking very gimmicky to me, aesthetics looking a lot less professional and geared more towards branding to catch the eye... kinda “corny” if you ask me. 🤷🏻♂️
Agreed, first impression was that it looked a bit tacky.
Hard to disagree. Love to see these numbers: R and D budget VS Marketing budget.
Spot on mate 👍
Maverick looks like an old m2.. sim looks like a cobra.. apparently there's no other ideas out there
Thought the same thing. Reminds me of 2015/16. Callaway hot driver and xr and the m2.
Good honest review, well done Rick, just shows all this "goes further" from manufacturers is absolute bull
Meanwhile I'm still gaming my Titleist 915 D3 XD
Same, the best. New ts feels rubbish compared
Im still gaming my Jack nicholas wooden driver.
I love my Epic Flash Sub Zero, and at the price point of these drivers now, it's going to be in my bag for a while. Great test! Shows just how similar these "new" drivers are, and the price point is going to keep more people from upgrading year to year.
I have the Rogue driver and it's honestly perfect for me
I bought a rogue last year and loved it. After about 10 rounds the head cracked where it met the shaft. Called Callaway and they sent me a brand new epic flash. I was a bit disappointed until I hit it. All the distance rogue gave me and much more consistently straight hits.
I can hear callaway employees just screaming at this video xD
...good stuff as always mate!
"Really for tour players only..."
Guess I'm a tour player now then? :D
It just hit me how good your videos have gotten Rick. Great job! Excellent review.
I'd be more interested in seeing Mavrik compared to Rogue; it seems more like a Rogue with "flash face."
Worse looking and data is no different....
Conclusion: Go Cleveland 😉
Great review.
Literally just purchased the Mavrik 8/18/2023 😁😁😁 as well as Cobra irons & in the process of purchasing a 2021 cobra tec 4 hybrid & a cobra ltdx max 3 wood 😁😁😁😁😁😁
Very happy with the irons & learning the driver but extremely happy because I'm just learning!!!
Surely they don’t think anyone still buys into the “5 yards further” spiel!
What else are they wasting their money on?
No I was hitting it only 50 yards 30 years ago. Now 275-285 carry with new driver. It has to be the driver nothing to do with not being 4 years old anymore
notformebeaky hey my drivers the 10 year old model! It goes 110 yards!
It was a bold claim
My theory is that a driver you've had 2 years will probably lose 5/10 yards due to shaft and face wear... therefore the new driver will go 5/10 yards 'longer' **logic**
Awesome video as usual. Showing that you don't have to get a new driver every year. Waiting at least a good five yrs. To get new clubs is so comforting to the clubs that I have. My clubs are great, I was allowed to increase the shaft of all the clubs. Gives me the height and distance combined that everybody wants and looks for. My club are the Thomas golf custom built and fit clubs
How Do you say data?
Dayta : like
Dahta: comment
CIVICIOUS GENX Australians say dahta
Rick, thanks for review as I went with cobra extreme, and one thing I noticed and several others, + handicappers at that, asked anybody get that to go left? I said no I can’t , and others can’t as well and I’m using lite shaft. Since this review reveals the epic longer, not by much buy I’ll go with mav max cause almost $100 cheaper than epic, can’t believe still carrying a high price for older driver!
Class review as always Rick. I’d have to go with the SIM 👍
Both are good drivers. It’ll do on looks probably
Hope they offer custom colours. That orange is horrid
Superb methodology and honest testing. It always come down to subtle things like look and sound. Great job again, Rick!
They need a new design team for color n style.
To clarify both color n name my mind goes right to rusty POS orange Ford mavrick. Also had white stripes.
Great review Rick back to doing what you do best shame these reviews didn't happen last year would of loved to seen you do this with the mp20 irons
Lol the way the review ended .... no !!! See ya hahaha 😂
I’m watching Mr. Shiels review these drivers but I can’t stop bopping my head to the background music, sick beats Rick!
I did testing of the Sim against my M3 gamer and no matter what the TM rep tried, it was always 5 yards shorter. Saved myself $500.
@@jamesbuckley1686 No surprise!
There’s simply just not much left the manufacturers can improve on year over year. The face of the clubs have all been at the legal limit for some time now. I’d be interested to see if there is much difference on off center hits. I’d rather lose 10 yards to be able to hit it straighter.
I love my mavrik. Best driver I have ever owned. I haven’t owned many, but this review made me confident that buying one was worth it.
“MAVRIK” they’ve ran out of names, honestly.
Its Tom Cruise approved. 👍
Gotta get in for the Top Gun release later this year.
Great video, brilliant review and comparisons. I like the honest reviews you do on new clubs, stops people wasting money on new clubs that aren’t any better👍👏
That super computer that's been making these super high tech club faces is gonna get demoted to a fax machine if it keeps this up
Then donated to a community college!
That ending proper made me laugh. So blunt 😂😂😂
That look ugggglyyyyy
Just started playing this month. Got this club for 399 USD rather than 499. I’ve never hit a driver as well as this one. Really happy with my purchase
Glad I saw this...I just bought 10 days ago the Epic Flash and was wondering if I had done the right thing...now I know! Thanks Rick.
Easily, the best golf channel on TH-cam.
Well what coincidence. Get notification on this review, and an e-mail from Callaway about the Mavrik. Perfect timing and good information! The Mavrik Max seems somewhat similar to what I’m currently hitting now the Callloway FT-IQ Tour.
Another great review Rick. Appreciate your honesty when it comes to reviewing golf equipment.
Wow was not expecting that! Rick, you are so great. Thanks for all that you do for us golfers. Always love the content.
