I was watching this video the night before my English mock, and the next day we were given the exact same paper and source! I actually got a pretty decent grade as well for the first time ever. Thank you, Mrs Whelan! Lol :-)
I have my yr 10 english mock tomorrow and I'm gonna pray this happens lmao edit: i just found this comment again somehow literally the day before i have the second part to this same mock lmao
You are such a helpful tutor for this! This is like a goldmine. I’ve never been confident, only getting like 5 or 6 at most on these questions. But I’ve never been able to get into a mindset of how to look for the techniques and how to develop that into a paragraph. Mock today, watching this in the morning, wish me luck!
I think it's good to practice - find an extract and just plan. Don't wrote out the questions as that can get boring but by planning you're practising the important skills you need in an exam
This is SUCH A HELP, I cannot describe how much this has boosted my confidence, as I hadn’t quite grasped the concept of structure yes, but this has really helped! Thank you!
M. P .V gamez I've never done an English exam before as I was put on a ESOL exam when English is actually my first language not my second. I understood so much in a short space of time, now I have an idea as to what I should be looking for.
Hi I am studying GCSE English at Adult Education. This is very helpful, as structure for me is harder than language. This is a brilliant way to go through this.
I used this in order to assist my offspring!! He's only 7 years of age and is partaking in GCSE's! He takes his intellect after me! This video is much appreciated, thank you.
This is amazing. Honestly better than my teachers at school . I am sitting my GCSE in a weeks time and this has really really helped. I get like 4s in my English exams and now I think I could get 5s and 6s
I got my exams in the summer and I've never taken GCSE English before. I'm 19, on an ECP and currently taking a course in Electrical Installation. English has never interested me nor do I see it being important. Let me explain why I don't see it being important. To me, having an English GCSE isn't that important when it comes to being an Electrician or Carpenter; who needs to be able to break down the structure of an extract from a book when being a carpenter? None. What they need are core English skills that everyone needs. That's why a lot of trades people have Functional Skills English Levels 1&2. Most people in the trades, that I know of, never passed GCSE English and some didn't take it, but they pull in about 30k a year doing carpentry, mechanics and such. As a note: I'm self-taught when it comes to English. Never bothered with it in school, I just taught myself everything I need to know so I have no troubles with job applications; getting work; having conversations; or writing an email/text. What is also shocking is the amount of people who have passed their GCSE English but are still fucking terrible at it. Ironic.
I'm pretty good at English, never hard a problem with it, and actually love writing but I still dislike the subject, for what you said, because of how useless it is. Never understood why analysis of an extract was so key. I remember back in primary school thinking secondary school English would be like developing literacy, maybe learning about English history (like Shakespeare) but more specifically, reading, creative writing, authoring, essays on relevant, modern or ethical subjects (like the speech wiritng but more significant and in depth) quite a disappointment to be honest.
I visited your other videos and I admit you have very broad vocabulary I wish I could write in that tune but English as a 2nd language I always struggle to find stronger adjectives and verbs which is the key for better marks in exams.
Structure question can sometimes be very hard- sometimes I mix it up with language! How can you tell the distinct difference between the language and structure in the extract.
Madgirltt [Tracey] great question. Think of structure as the way the writing has been built/constructed. 'Language' is words and their meanings. 'Structure' is how those words are organised.
Mrs Whelan's English Oh my gosh, finally I have an answer! Best English Teacher Ever! Thanks for all the videos! My english teacher tries and wants to help but he is not as good. Your videos have helped me actually know how to structure the answers! Once Again, Thank yooou!
Mrs Whelan's English hi I wanted some help with my gcse English is there any where I could message you so I could discus question 3 in more detail Thank you
Could write about how many syllables the paragraph has, does it rhyme at all? Do the words create pace? and if so why, could link any type of pace to the write or the character's heart rate, and try to link any of this to context, get that extra marks. Hope this helps, good luck tomorrow!
My revising is more easier with those videos now,I can learn much more from these examples than what they gave me from the pixl conference, this is much more efficient and useful to me.(Sorry if I have some mistakes in my english, sometimes I struggle with some words ,but I'm sorting it out in time)
i am in year 10 and have my english GCSE tomorrow :( SO NERVOUS! to be honest i watch and revise everything for ages but then as soon as i go in to the exam room i litterally forget everything and dont know what to do... i need google in my brain
this honestly helps so much feeling much more confident :). If its possible could you go through most of the structual techniques on how i can apply them in my exam ,as in the video there was 2/3 covered. Thanks alot alot though very useful ;)
I would write about the time frame as well as the structure of text. The time frame would be good to write about since you can link it to a historical event and how it would effect the character at that time... for an example if the story was set at the time of WWII and it says the all children grew tired and became starved.
Hi Mrs Whelan, I’m glad I came across your videos. I have my English paper one in a week time. I learnt a lot from your videos however, I would like to know how many paragraphs I need for questions 2,3and 4 please? thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Mrs Whelan would you please write as many of the structural techniques that there are ? ;so I can check them against the ones I already have and see if I’m missing any .

Could you write a paragraph about the beginning, one about the middle and a third about the end and how they differ structurally? Love the videos they're so helpful!
Justa Viewer yes... that's what I've told mine to do. There WILL be a shift of focus in the extract... the bullet points are always the same so you should prepare for the fact that there will be that shift
can you talk about the contrast of how dawn has connotations to light and warmth whereas nightmares have connotations to pain and suffering hence foreshadowing the traumatic and distressing situations that Alex might have to endure due to his mother's illness
