    I wish I could have seen the looks on the faces of the record executives when they first heard this. They must have expected a series of anodyne MOR standards. Then this insanity dropped on their lap. Wonderful and bloody hilarious. What a man.

      That's exactly what they expected. It had become a fashion for successful actors to "sing" on albums. Some were good like Edward Woodward, others embarrasing, boring or just plain awful.
      Mr Wyngarde was determined to be uniquely memorable. A true recording hero.

      He was nothing if not original. A unique talent ahead of his time and yet perfect for it.

    In September 1975, actor Peter Wyngarde was arrested (under his real name, Cyril Louis Goldbert) in Gloucester bus station public toilets for gross indecency with Richard Jack Whalley (a truck driver). He was fined £75

    He may be a legend but I'm sorry, I still think this is crap. You might have bought it back in the day coz he was so popular and very smooth... but it's still crap. The other one I found was celebrating rape in all its forms around the world in racist stereotype false accents... no kidding.

    • @NickSBailey
      @NickSBailey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Never know why people have to say sorry, you think it's crap and that's fine. I think it has merit in the same way Spike Milligan has because it's so out there and ridiculous, yes some of it's shocking like the rape / rubbish stereotypical accents one but much of it's quite funny. It doesn't mean I'm sexist and racist for listening to it, far far from it but we need to get away from this culture of trying to erase anything with the slightest offence to it. If it's totally hidden how can you challenge it? I just drives these attitudes underground.

    • @bernardw4842
      @bernardw4842 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NickSBaileyNo I don't think that liking this or any other media has to mean that you or anyone else enjoying it must be bigoted. It'd be ridiculous to take this song too literally, it's ironic and partly satyrical and has merit that way, but even if it didn't I'd never ask for it to be erased. I get what the humour is about and how it worked in the context of its times and the culture around it, but it just doesn't work for me, and as you say that should be fine. I said "sorry" knowing that some people can't hear a criticism of something they like without thinking it reflects on them and then being offended by that perceived slight. I guess you're right that saying what I did should be un-apologetic. I didn't say, and I certainly don't think, it should be erased, banned, censored in any way, but a lot of people do. Let anyone say anything they want, and let it offend some people - better that than taking away their right to say it. In fact my country Australia does not guarantee freedom of expression or any other "rights", and there are more threats and exceptions to those freedoms than guarantees. Of course I believe that's a far worse threat than a dumb song that can be taken to be bigoted. You can see the song did offend me but I would never ask for it to be censored. I appreciate your considered response taking my post on the face of it and support what you say. Cheers.
