Never played it or want to go back for a nostalgia run? some websites are keeping abandoned games alive for future generations. I lost my copy years ago but was able to download and play again this gem from 'abandon ware games . net' [type all together] and then type Freelancer on the search bar, download [probably will need to add .zip to the file after download] and install.

ABOUT THE GAME [FROM WIKIPEDIA]
Freelancer is a space trading and combat simulation video game developed by Digital Anvil and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It is a chronological sequel to Digital Anvil's Starlancer, a combat flight simulator released in 2000. The game was initially announced by Chris Roberts in 1999, and following many production schedule mishaps and a buyout of Digital Anvil by Microsoft, it was eventually released in March 2003.
In the game, players take on the roles of spacecraft pilots. These characters fly single-seater ships, exploring the planets and space stations of 48 known star systems. They also engage in dogfights with other pilots (player- and computer-controlled) to protect traders or engage in piracy themselves. Other player activities include bounty-hunting, commodity trading, and resource mining. The single-player mode puts the player in the role of Edison Trent, who goes through a series of missions to save the Sirius sector from a mysterious alien force. In multiplayer mode, players are free to take on any role and to explore anywhere from the start.
Gameplay
Players take up the roles of pilots who fly single-seat spacecraft, trading with merchants on space stations and planets, and engaging in combat against other vessels. Starting with a small spacecraft in a star system, the player's character explores the region, opening up new systems for further adventures. Each system provides opportunities to increase the pilot's wealth; aside from taking on jobs to ferry goods and hunting for bounties, the player character can engage in trade.[1] The player character's primary goal in the game is to accumulate money, so as to buy more advanced weaponry and equipment to upgrade his ship.[2]
A spacecraft is near the bottom of the screen, heading towards the center. The background is filled with stars and asteroids. Gauges and icons line the top and bottom of the screen.
In Freelancer, the spacecraft is controlled by pointing and clicking with the mouse.
The game is played primarily through "pointing and clicking" with the mouse and a few keyboard commands. This system is also used to control the spacecraft, a breakaway from the traditional use of joysticks for space flight simulators.[3] Observing their spacecraft from the rear,[4] players fly their ships by moving the mouse in the direction they want the vessels to go. Freelancer's spacecraft follow simplistic flight dynamics;[5] however, a dash of realism is implemented by allowing the vessels to cut power to their engines and turn to face any direction while drifting along their original path-conservation of momentum.[1] Clicking the mouse button shoots the ship's weapons at the location of the cursor.[3] The interface has no radar display; the location of objects not shown on the screen are indicated by pointers at the screen's edges. Targeting, communications, and navigation data are displayed in information boxes that can be minimized.[6]
After the pilot docks with a space station or lands on a planet, the screen and its interface change to a rendition of the area he is visiting. The player moves the pilot to different locations and interacts with certain objects, such as reading a bulletin board and talking to other characters, by clicking on their graphical representations.[7] Freelancer's economy consists of buying and selling spacecraft, their armaments and components, and commodities.[8] Certain goods are considered contraband in some systems, and they have to be smuggled past police patrols to their buyers. Computer-controlled characters (non-player characters or NPCs) in certain locations on the planets or stations offer quests and jobs.[6] - เกม
I've fond memories of working on Freelancer's music, and it's great to see that the game still has a following.

I miss this game. It needs a reboot or Edison Trent needs to come out of retirement.
Game of my childhood, one of the first games I remember playing online. My group of friends would do a trade run with one or two in a cargo ship and the others as escort fighters to keep away other player and AI. Such good times.
Hi Richy! I think there's people still playing it online to this day! I lost my disc years ago but found it on 'abandon ware games . net' downloaded and some files are for online play. Game still holds IMO if you can look through the graphics, it is MASSIVE and actually I never finished it. I will play it from time to time. 2003 game still look and play better than a lot of modern tripe. They just don't make things like they used to.
Hi Draylynn, totally agree! if you check the things I play on the channel you will see that yes, I check new games and all, but I always go back and play oldies but goldies...to me the games 2000-2010 are the best ever, you can see the devs maked them with passion, deus ex, mafia, hidden&Dangerous 2, to name a few...now devs are ruled by men in suits, it's all business and money making sadly...nowadays I'm more excited looking at websites of abandon games than the new releases lol take care Draylynn my friend and thank you for leaving a comment, much appreciated! Guess its time to dig through my old game disks and see if i still have Freelancer! This game really really deserves a remaster!!
Hey Rhakin, if you don't have the disk anymore you can still get it, I played this game downloaded from abandon ware games . net [all together] then type freelancer search bar and you can download it from there, if you have trouble to install it let me know will try to help you, it comes with patches and I think people are still playing it online up to this day. Sorry can't write the link as can get in trouble, even though game is not sold anywhere anymore...I agree a remaster would be awesome!! Hi Magnus_Picard my friend! I threw countless hours to this game back in the day too, a classic game with a formula copied by many others. It actually holds up pretty decent for a 20 year old game isn't it? the space fights are fun. Software is abandoned and can't purchase it anywhere but is available at sites like the one I mention in the description if you want to have a nostalgia run. Take care my friend and be well, Cheers!!

Hello Liliia, a great game that still influence modern titles. I'm not sure about a remake though, unfortunately we are plagued by businessman ruling over enthusiastic developers nowadays...I don't think by today's standards would do a good job and be fair to the original game...would probably break it into million parts sold as dlc's to travel to a different system, and cosmetic microtransactions with skins for your character and ships etc...I'd rather just play the original, still looks nice with mods but that's just my opinion. I spent countless of hours with this game. So good memories. This game needs an official remaster / remake. One of the best games i've ever played on PC.
Hello Project Sirius my friend! oh wouldn't that be nice, but we can only dream, this was another generation of developers/publishers and this old gems just can't be redone now....now it would be broken down in dlcs and pay to win upgrades with a microtransaction store BS
I still enjoy playing this to be honest, graphics don't make a game alone, would be awesome with new visuals but the gameplay itself still fantastic. I find myself nowadays downloading games from abandon sites, games I never played from 2000-2010 or older, and having much more fun than new titles.

@@gaminginadaydream I actually restarted this game after I saw your video. I'm almost finished the single player campaign. It's so much fun. It's been over 10 years since I've last played this game and 20 years since I've finished the campaign. This game is still so much fun. Comparing this game to Starfield is bit pointless, but, I have to admit, this game does some things so much better than Starfield.

To me Starfield like all Bethesda games shine when you go away from the main story, I actually have a lot of fun whenever I play it, I logged over 25hrs in the game so far, and I haven't reached Constellation yet, which you could say I haven't finished the tutorial haha I play the hardest difficulty and just wander around toying with stuff mostly blind, don't look up what things are what online...The space battles are fun once you figure out mechanics and spend skill point to use side thrusters...I have a short vid on the channel where I'm level 5 and fight a level 12 ship, took me 3 tries but once I figured it out I beat the heck out of it, without the thruster skill that was too. But anyway, the plot and story in Freelancer is top notch, I wish I had more time to put into the game again, I actually never finished the main story in Freelancer myself....too many side quest hahaha Take care Project Sirius my friend and wish you a wonderful Christmas that are around the corner, and the best for 2024! Marco, have you tried Chorvs?, is not even close to Frelancer [no game ever will] but if you like the story which the main character is attached to her ship's AI, then you might enjoy it, not easy fighting either. @@Capt.Marco-Hawk-L.L.A.P I had to check on steam, I actually own X-Beyond the Frontier and never played it, I have 15h on X3 Terran Conflict..but that was in 2015. The game that got me hooked was Space Engineers, sandbox adding trizillion mods making my own stories, I have a Permadeath survival challenge on the channel if you like those type of games...I have to give EVE a try... thank you my friend, take care and be well, Cheers!
@@gaminginadaydream I played space engineers when it first came out was a very different game back then, spending hours mining for mats and boarding npc ships for fun. made my own base out of a large asteroid and shaped it into a skull
@@Capt.Marco-Hawk-L.L.A.P yeah that's the one! mining for hours I end up using a mod to speed up, I have like 2k hours in that game lol I want to play Osiris New Dawn that I bought and never played it, you tried that one by any chance?. Also have No Mans Sky but never really got into it more than a few hours...
This and Eve online came out same year. EVE is still going. Worth a try if you never played.

My last two Off-the-Shelf PCs came without disk drives. I have this game sitting in front of me as I type this, and I can't even make use of the disk. 🤬

Hi Edvin you are welcome my friend. I think on the readme text of the downloaded files mentioned about multiplayer and mods, if I remember correctly. You can check at; abandon ware games . net [all together] and type freelancer on the search bar. Download the files which are not big, then add .zip at the end of downloaded name file if it doesn't say it, then use zip,winrar or 7z to unpack the files, these include latest patches of the game. Then check the readme text files...I didn't pay much attention to be honest cause mostly play single player myself. Let me know if you have any issues to find it. Take care Edvin and be well, Cheers!

It's sad .. I really wanted to play this game again. But since I didn't found my licence key I can't get the game working beyond the certain point.

There was a scene where the game crashes if you pirate the game. I think it was after you ran from the bandits to the sector with the German city names (it's like 15 years since I last played)
@@KaneOtonashi The files are original, it's not pirating, the game is abandoned by it's developers and is not for sale anymore. There are websites where they keep the game files available for new generation of gamers. If I remember correctly there are all the patches included with the download to the latest version of the game. You can install it and give it a try Kane, Cheers
I still have my original copy.... I tried to install it a few times. Never could get it to run on a newer computer. Win 10. Was this game a MMO? I never played it online. Just single player.

Hi Abraham, I lost my cd copy long ago so I downloaded it from a site called abandon ware games . net [all together] search for freelancer and download the file. When you open it with Winrar,winzip etc you will find some patches. Even if you have the cd version you can still copy the patches and paste them to your game folder. If I remember correctly there is a readme file explaining which files to install, there is even a patch that allows the game to play on widescreen and 1080p. Hello Blazer, YES YOU CAN!! I also lost my disc years ago and got it from a site that keeps abandon games alive. It works on W10 and still a lot of fun. I got it from; abandon ware games . net [type all together] then search for Freelancer. Download the file and if it doesn't have it just add .zip at the end so you are able to open it with zip/winrar etc, open and check the readme file for installation instructions. Better if you have an app like PowerIso [free] to mount/open iso files [original older games were only available on disc]. it is not very hard if you follow instructions, there are hundreds of cool games available there, enjoy! How did you get it to run! It keeps crashing whenever I try to play the campaign. :( One of my top 5 games ever.

I downloaded the game from 'abandon ware games . net' [all together] and followed the instruction there, probably the .exe of original game doesn't work on W10 but the files from this site are tweaked to work on new windows. Did it's long time ago but as I have nothing the ultimate patch to have access to primus,gamu missions trade and all other new worlds and ships I gave upon got 87 millions but nothing to spend money

Hello Maxim! I couldn't unfortunately, does it allow to use compatibility mode?, you will need to set the .exe with compatibility and administrator rights to work. @@2Famouz I haven't heard of that one, will check it out thanks. A lot of games tried to do similar things to Freelancer but the bar is set very high, Everspace 2 is a recent one but many others tried...
I uninstalled Starfield tonight, I'll be installing this instead. 100% better.
