Want to learn how to paint copper with fire? Then check this video out...
In this video you'll see me colour some sheet copper and pre-cut blanks, with the flame from my blow torch.
I was trying to think of something to make my Mom for Mother's Day. Here in the Uk, Mother's Day is at the end of March, so I am so happy with how these turned out and I'm sure she will love them.
If you are looking for a simple and effective project to make something special for your Mom, or anyone you think will love them, just try this, copper is a 7th wedding anniversary gift too so that might help inspire you.
Why does it work? - something to do with Wien's law, observed wavelengths, temperature and radiation... blah blah - you don't need to know how or why, you just need to marvel at all the pretty colours as they dance, blend and glow!

@@MakingItOutOfTheWoods Thanks! I made the earrings and they turned out really good. They would've been really great but I tend to be a perfectionist sometimes to the point of over-tweaking and ruin. LOL! I had some gorgeous gold and red, very autumn-esque, colors but kept torching it and ended with lavender, gold, and green. It was lotsa fun and I'm anxious to do more. Thanks again so much! 😊

Suggestion for those getting started:
Use distilled water to quench the heat. The minerals and other trace elements in tap or even filtered & spring bottled water can leave deposits on the metal and interfere with the coloration.

Hi, I know this is a old video and you probably don’t answer questions anymore. But if you do: how thick must the copper be for it to work? I’d really like to try this. It looks so cool and fun.
Always happy to answer questions, just don’t get a lot of time in the workshop at the moment. Any thickness. But I used 2mm. Hope that helps. 👍 x

You must be special to be so honoured!! Ha! Mmm the only thing I could think of would be to mask the area off with tape and then stick some waste copper over the taped area too, heat it and perhaps it would keep heat from the area you’d masked?!? Is it necessary to sand the copper strip before flaming? I purchased a strip of copper that I'll flame as decoration across a fireplace mantle.
I tried sanding and not sanding, works ok both ways the sealing is the most difficult step to get right
