@@BaNaNa2377 I've been familiar with the WH40K lore for a while now, but recently I read my first novel; Lion, Son of the Forest. It was awesome! I like the 1st, 6th and 13th Legion's aesthetics the best out of all of them, but the Dark Angels Primarch is my fav, I think :)
Well done, my Dark Angels Brother! A beautiful army. My wife and I had suffered a devastating loss and I threw myself into the hobbying part. It helped so much. To be able to slow down, turn my grieving brain off, and just work. It really is meditative. Well done, my friend.
As a perfectionist recently struggling with the hobby aspect, this was a well timed and much needed message! I really appreciate David's attitude, layout of his thoughts on what drove him, and for PlayOn to give him this platform to speak on it. Inspiring stuff and a great looking army!
Hey just a message for nick! You've got me into tau and my brother into warhammer in general, he loves whenever you play and he says he's always in a better mood whenever you're on since he's been a bit down recently
I've had an eerily similar journey to you; been into the hobby since the 90s, thought I wasn't good enough, got hooked on Dawn of War. Years passed, and I happened to see a video from PlayOn...of the same massive Space Marines vs Tyranids battle. I finally threw my hands up and bought a box of Tactical Marines from my local store, and nearly 3 years later I have a 2000pt army of Blood Ravens.
Something to note to. Some people are into this hobby to play on the table. They aren't in this hobby to be a painter. So in those cases your going to see more things like dark washes for recessed areas, dry brushed highlights and two to three colours per piece. With a simple base. Then you get people that are into the hobby for the lore, their armies can sometimes have really well done leaders or named heroes and really plain units. What we usually see though on youtube is competition looking pieces, the pieces that take hours and days to finish. With custom bases, with rocks, branches, flowers, water or lava effects. Massive amounts of blending, shadows, highlights, object source lighting, bounce lights, none metallic metal etc and so forth. The people that do stuff like that are usually painting said miniatures for their main jobs or at least for a commission or to win a contest. People need to stop comparing themselves and their minis to these types of people lol. Nobody just starting out in the hobby is going to wind up painting a work of art the first thing they try to paint. It's a learned skill. Like cooking. The worst thing someone can do though is not paint whatever they have and feel bad about their skills. You wont get better if you dont put the time in and paint. Like cooking. It all takes time. 🦖
Been collecting Dark Angels for 22 years now and I must say a gorgeous looking Army David! I enjoyed watching your game against Nick. I liked the way it was set up in a narrative way. Also you are very knowledgeable about the lore which I really like. Can't wait to see you more often on Play On. I hope this gives other watchers lots of motivation to just go and try out the hobby and collect the Army that speaks to them looks wise
David has such a great attitude towards painting. "Do better on the next one." I don't have the steadiest hands or the best eye myself either, but as long as I'm moving forward it's all good. FTL.
Thanks for featuring David and his army! As a new player myself, both are an inspiration. Love that the Play on Tabletop team hosted one of their long-time supporters like this to share his love of the hobby with other fans.
Nice army! Thanks for talking about your approach and love seeing all the conversions you've made. Best part for me was hearing about your nod to the Dreadwing - I've been working them into the lore for my DA successors in a similar way. Keep up the awesome work
Hell ya what an awesome video, I’ve been really wanting to get into the hobby part of 40k myself but feel the same way this guy used to feel, I’m not artistic at all don’t have steady hands and just feel like I couldn’t do it but after watching this it has really made me feel like I wanna go for it
Truly loved this showcase. Originally clicked on the video because it was Dark Angels, but then I got to appreciate that you guys are sharing your fan's work with the rest of your fanbase. Great stuff guys!
I can relate to Daivd, Play On's big Apocalypse game of Marines vs Tyranids was the first video of theirs I watched and was one of the first 40k videos that finally convinced me to give the hobby another chance after I crashed/burned trying to enter back in early 3rd edition as a kid. It is now nearly 4 years later, and I own over 5000 points of Deathwatch and a few Imperial side characters (I spend probably too much time on each model brainstorming how I want to customize them before meticulously sculpting/kit-bashing them).
I just started a dark angels army. I’ve got 3 blageguard done and a bunch of intersessor on the way. I’m doing a successor chapter with all the same colours themes except that they are dark purple instead of dark green, the deathwing having only some parts of their armour white like in 30k. I really like the result so far. In my head canon all the characters are Risen leading primaris marines. The chapter is called the Honour Guard for their Risen that have stayed honourable even after being called traitor for 10 000 years. Thanks for reading my comment 😂 Cheers
Awesome looking Dark Angels army! I love how you took the Dark Angels scheme and made it your own while staying true the 1st legion. I also picked them because I liked their look, lore, and having a now active Primarch.
One of the best pieces of advice I can give to someone who thinks they won’t be good enough at painting - 2ft. If you think they look good from 2ft away, then they’re good enough. How often do you really pick up and look closely at an individual models? Meanwhile, on the tabletop they be about 2ft away on average. So that little bit of blending that you think you messed up on? Too far away to see.
I always love seeing these videos and as a proud son of caliban I'm very excited to see more sons of the lion and I'm happy to be getting my Lion tomorrow and gonna build my army of Risen :)
Loved this episode! David should be proud of what he has accomplished with his army! It looks good and it was amazing hearing how he started out and finally took the leap and decided to start playing. More of these sunshine stories!
I bought the Dark Vengence box years ago for Chaos army and left the Dark Angels in my drawer. This has honestly pushed me to just not worry about them being perfect and just enjoy them. Awesome content as always!
Been a big fan of the dark angels lore and army since I was a kid. This is a beautifully painted army. I have serious army envy from seeing this video.
MOOD KINDRED?! I struggled to get into the hobby because I figured I could never paint well enough to due the models justice. 3 years later, each new model is a learning learning experience for doing something better, learning a new technique and upping my painting/modeling game. Congrats on making an outstanding army, and for helping people maybe sitting on the fence about their own abilities make a jump in and learn to surprise themselves with how far they can grow and learn!
Amazing work! I also delayed getting my first army because I was afraid I couldn't paint them good enough and would ruin them. A turning point for me was discovering 'slap chop' painting with speed paints. The results were surprisingly good enough to boost my confidence to keep going.
I love this type of video! Please make more of these army and player showcases! I do have one suggestion, though: I found the music an odd choice. Metal works for game sounds, but when the topic is more introspective, the music should take a backseat and not take away the focus from the person speaking, as I was distracted throughout the video by the music.
I've been wanting to play 40k for years but the painting has been the hardest and most daunting prospect. I also have very little artistic ability, but I've been practicing and beginning to enjoy the meditative nature of painting. I really needed this video to see that there is hope for me yet!
Over the last few weeks I've taken a sharp interest in Warhammer40k and have been watching you guys and this channel! It seems like a very fun and enjoyable game especially with the cool and fun people featured on video. I still don't know too much about it or where to even begin, but the Grey Knights look so sick and I would love to get a set and paint them...but I'm not sure if I'd have the time to learn how to play the game or to stop by my local Warhammer store to bother others trying to learn to play lol
I’ve only been in this hobby for about 1.5 years and I’m currently setting a goal for myself to paint my pile of unpainted stuff before I start my armies that are still in their boxes (and it needs to be done by the end of this year). It’s certainly been a challenge since I mainly play chaos factions and therefore have a ton of trim to do, but it’s also been a great challenge and motivation to get myself hobbying more often! Highly recommend setting hobby goals for yourself to get things done, it lights a fire under your rear for sure
I felt the same way when I started. I had the phobos kill team sitting on my table for a month before I opened it. Then I bought a push fit set and started with it because i was lost with all the options in the phobos box. Painting is one of my favorite parts now
This video is great. I have the same thoughts when it comes to painting my Dark Angels. I just recently built my first mini and will be painting it soon. I am nervous, especially since I got a commission painter to paint up/build a good portion of my current army. David's message was really helpful, and I'll keep that in mind when I get around to painting my chaplain in terminator armor.
In 9th i bought myself some tau models but i only finished a squad of breachers and a broadside and stopped, but i found a group that plays and i bought myself a 2k army. the painting for me is so important, seeing my models painted is making me so happy.
I had pretty much the same attitude towards the hobby. Never thought I'd paint things to be good enough that I could show them to anyone; I practiced on resin minis which I had a lot of (still unpainted), but my early experiments were basically the sort of stuff that Rhodes Academy shows off for a 'do not attempt' showcase. Not that steady with brush, either. And now that I have a few models 'finished' I'm dreading putting the decals onto them or sealing them because 'couldnt I go back and do more work? This will waste the mini, I could fix it more...' My current resolution is that I'll seal them after doing the best I can without wasting weeks on each one, and just use that as a reminder for how my skill changes as I keep painting - leave a number on each mini so I can track which one was in order I painted. Also considering getting a notebook to write down what worked, what didnt, WIP on some specific mini and what I have left to do, and methods I thought looked good but werent needed at the time. EDIT: I also got started with Space marines and immediately wanted to go for Dreadnoughts and Tanks because vehicles are my favorite part. Even got Iron Father because I thought it'd be thematic... Later learned that he is the ONLY iron hands mini, that Black Templars do better with what I like, and that I like Ultramarine color coding... So now I'm some kind of heretic, with an Iron Hands? army in Ultramarine colors (beginning, only a few painted so far), and no idea if I should pull back from Iron hands!
Nick, that Dread stomping on a Crisis Suit is straight out of War of Secrets novel. You know, the one where the fourth expansion sphere leaders turn on their human vassals. And get the DAs to kill them while they try to wipe out the Angels of Absolution.
I was introduced to 40k around the start of 8th, collected a few models off ebay and Deathwing Knights prepainted. Then after my wife and i got married, we joined a new church and I found a group to play 40k with towards the end of 9th, i built a Dark Angels army up from scratch, been wanting to get the Veteran models, and would totally build my army entirely with cloaks if i could afford it (have twins now). I havent painted my army, and really wish i could paint my army as a sorta Deathwing expansion. 20 termies strong!
I was super intimidated for years because i got into 40k as a kid but didn't start playing until my 30s. I've learned to play into my strengths, i don't have steady hands and i don't go for absolute maximum detail but i know i am good color selection and as a result everything looks awesome together on a table. I love when i get compliments for my armies and internally im like "Just don't look up close" hahaha
Totally agree with everything said - Skari's 'Just put paint on it' philosophy had led to me embracing the painting side of the hobby and at my last GT I won 'Best Painted'
I've been interested in Dark Angels lore for decades (yeah, old man here) and this is the first time I heard about the Hexagrammaton and I'm all for it. Edgy medieval knights just got a whole lotta cooler.
I was honestly myself surprised when I went to my hobby shop after painting my most of my T'au. I have a slight variation of the Vior'la Sept as my colour scheme mostly adding a bit more Orange to help break up all the white. With making some of the similar looking units having purple instead, so I could tell which unit was which. Mostly who was close range and who was long range. What surprised me most was people saying "The white looks so good" then asking "How did you get your white to look like that?" I had no idea white was such a hard colour to make work, since I was so new to painting and it was my main colour. Not to mention people gawking over my Farsight with his translucent green sword. Which was a choice I made because it's a Necron Sword (As I'm told) so I thought it should be green. I didn't think much of my painting skills but hearing and seeing some of the issues people had with white alone made me realize I did a good job. It's not perfect but I did a good job and made me less ashamed to show them off. It helped me be confident in my ideas even if it isn't the "cannon" colour scheme.
This makes me glad to have chosen the Dark Angels for my 40K army. I can’t wait to start my journey with the Ultimate Starter Set. I’m looking forward to getting my refund from my student aid this semester to start my own Dark Angels and Hallowed Knights for Skaventide.
We actually can see a skeleton hand coming out on 1 of the watchers on Lion L's scabbard carrier on the mini! Which makes me think the big skeleton robed figure on the same mini with wings and sword and halo is an ancient watcher in the dark. Which makes me think again, the name Dark Angels is to honor these creatures, these angels in the cloak and shadows, and watchers are the baby Dark Angels that survived. They are nurturing them to full size to use as weapons in the final fight.
I too was very into warhammer, but the hobby aspect intimated me for a long time for the same reason. And this is me telling you all now if you feel that way don't, go out and buy your first box of minis it's an amazing hibby
I'm very much the same way. Been into 40k since dawn of war 2, but I always said I'd never get the minis because I couldn't do the painting or assembling. I finally gave in when the new csm codex was coming out. I have some stuff and... I'm half right half wrong. I'm not bad at it, I'm actually impressed by the first 2 models I painted. I am however, incredibly slow and I procrastinate a lot and it's easy for me to go a week without even looking at a model. I have the itch to play, I really really want to play some games and I'm sure once I do I'll be able to go back to the hobby portion with no problem. However to play some games, I need to do the hobby portion first..
9:35 he does have a point in that. Also during siege of fenris, the dark angels are tricked by the changeling into bombing the planet so when the grey knights arrive on the rock and exposes the changeling they obviously chased after it. But during the chase the changeling who was diguised as azrael stumbled upon a watcher but since the changeling is a daemon it didnt see the watcher as a small hooded figure but rather as a empty void that gave off VERY ominous vibes to the point even the changeling was like " NOPE" and ran full speed away from it all the while the watcher just stood there doing nothing. so yea dont mess with the watchers as they make even deamons shit themself in fear

My current resolution is that I'll seal them after doing the best I can without wasting weeks on each one, and just use that as a reminder for how my skill changes as I keep painting - leave a number on each mini so I can track which one was in order I painted.
I would love to bring my fallen army to table top and play David.
I would love to see more videos like this!!
As someone making a salamanders army, I love seeing the dark jade green of the fall- I mean dark angels.
This was such a great video to watch on my lunch break 😁
Hit the nail on the head on: “Going back to the paint table and looking at it” to rate yourself 😭 haha 🙌🏼🎉
Great job, always cool these showcases
nice video - very well done! great inspiration :)
Let’s gooo, Dark Angels appreciation is always GOATED
Totally agree with everything said - Skari's 'Just put paint on it' philosophy had led to me embracing the painting side of the hobby and at my last GT I won 'Best Painted'
I've been interested in Dark Angels lore for decades (yeah, old man here) and this is the first time I heard about the Hexagrammaton and I'm all for it. Edgy medieval knights just got a whole lotta cooler.
Awesome army and seems like an awesome guy
Well done David. Love the army, love the sentiment, great work, 10/10.
(but PlayOn, dial back the soundtrack, it was a little distracting. 9/10) 😁
Love this guy!
He is 40k
I have nearly a full company of Raven Guard I have painted in two years. Id love to show them to the world on your platform some day.
Nurglings in trench coats are the reason I love dark angels.
I play successor chapter for Dark Angels as my main army. Love seeing when dark angels are on the channel.
I was the same. I watched play on and decided to dive in after 15 years of watching from the sidelines
I understand his mindset. Biggest difference is my wife loves painting. I am close to 1500 points for my Dark Angels.
Those heretics look awesome! Great job!
FOR THE LION!!! Have a rather large amount of Dark Angles. Sadly, most are just primed.
I too was very into warhammer, but the hobby aspect intimated me for a long time for the same reason. And this is me telling you all now if you feel that way don't, go out and buy your first box of minis it's an amazing hibby
Awesome video! would be really cool to do this style video with all guests!!
We have with a lot of them :)
most players want to play casual, narrative games. this channel should focus more on that.
Inspirational might just start painting
Great video as always. My only gripe is turn the music down. I want to hear the conversation.
Fair enough! Noted for next time.
@@PlayOnTabletop But also, please list the music, great riffs in several of the tracks 😃🤘
“Dark angels are the only force that can stand up to the ultramarines” *Laughs* in imperial fists
Love this video!
Such a good show. Greetings from vienna
