That's the best old school funk rhythm section in the busines. Love Lenny Pickett's vocals on the original recording. What a fun band to listen and dance to!
Whuuuuttt!? With Santana!!? That HAD TO have been one helluva a concert. The ONLY way to have topped it would have been to have the ONE and ONLY Lenmie Williams! 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾👊🏾💪🏾💖💪🏾👊🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Absolutley the best damn singer that I have ever seen live....so strong and consistent night after night. Larry Braggs is the man...hope that the Temptations enjoy him like us TOP fans did.
absolutely awesome - saw them 30 yrs ago, still great!! got Lenny's autograph on the 1st T of P lp.. tell everyone he taught me "the Oakland stroke", lol.. FUNK DOESN"T GET ANY BETTER - HORNS DON'T GET ANY BETTER!
This is when egos were checked at the door! CS playing with the great TOP! Man, they just have to love music like I do. As as good a drummer as I like to think I am, I'd play with any of these guys and PAY THEM!
O man I gotta get me a bass player something like that guy! He grooving all over that thing like a rash! Especially when he starts breaking it down and starts moving it around like nobody's business at 6.22. This geezer deserves a beer.
C'mon folks! Carlos is just sitting in. It's TOP's music. He's not gonna upstage them. He's a gentleman. And if you have any doubts about his playing ability, just listen to his stuff with John McLaughlin back in the day. Holy crap, where have you all been?
TOP Dam that is it! Unbelievable Band. Way underrated for what they put out night after night. So tight and FUNKY. I had the Honor of being opening Band to them on 5 shows in 71’ it will stay with me till the day I die.
Man, think of this horn section with EWF, Chicago, Kool & The Gang, WAR, Brass Construction, K.C. & Sunshine Band, B.T. Express and The JB's horn sections. If a time machine is every built, guess which decade I'm gonna visit. Great post.
You had to grow up in the 70's to understand how cool and hip this band was!! Remember, if u don't think Carlos Santana plays so good with this tight band, Tower of Power opened with every show that Santana played, they would have been never heard if Carlos did not think they were the shit and insisted they open every one of Santana's shows!! Chester Thompson, David Garibaldi, Lenny William's, All future stares and still have no match to this day!! Get u some of that!!!!
@@jopestv1063 no wonder I'd see TOP ads all over the Bay Area when I visited in the mid-70s! Sadly, I never got to see them perform. I *did* get to see Carlos Santana live once, at a benefit in NYC -- Taj Mahal opened for him, and was awesome. I was in heaven!
Was there too chub, will be doin' back-ro-backs at Ram's Head tomorrow, just getting geared up. Don't know how many years TOP has left with Emilio and Doc turning 63 this year, but I'm gonna ride with them as long as they can!
Santana is hip & Tower of Power too! I grew up seeing Carlos as a sort of House band at the Fillmore West when Bill Graham used to hang out in front .... and Tower of Power played East Bay venues .... I like seeing them together ...
As badass as they are, as hard as they groove, as undeniably funky as they can get, even the T.O.P. has to give props to the Godfather @ 3:57, by quoting the JB's "Soul Power". Genius respects the truth of their roots.
Great live version with Carlos Santana & great keyboardist Chester Thompson (ex-Tower Of Power, and now for Santana band) ! And of course, David Garibaldi & Francis "Rocco" Prestia !! Very hot version !!
This isn't somewhere in the world, This is at the Montreux Festival, dude! TOP is so groovy, funky, tight... and Santana is like we say in Belgium: the cherry on the cake =) FUNKYYYY
This is THE signature song which cemented Tower of Power's reputation as having absolutely "The tightest horns on the planet." Listen to this groove and see if you don't agree! It overflows with pure, quantum energy that puts it over the top. Tight, tense, anxious, hot, explosive! And that pulsating bass line throughout simply KICKS YOUR ASS!!! Not to mention that super-funky Hammond B3 which weaves itself passionately into the mix. This TOP classic is the very definition of Funk, and no other band has ever produced anything close in this genre. Give this a spin and be prepared to take a maddening Trip into Hipness....what it is!!!
10 yrs ago, I saw Carlos Santana crush Yoshi's in Oakland when he sat in with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. He's a versatile musician, crushing the Brazilian-Jazz-Funk grooves.
Man if I was there I'd be a dancing machine! By the time they got through the first verse a 100 people would of caught my groove, 2nd verse 200 dancing machine!!! Trust!!
The term 'hip' originated in the old west...used to identify a frequenter of Chinese opium dens, as customers would usually lay on their sides...on their hip.
Just a high-energy, kick-ass performance by one of the world's tightest bands! Carlos came unprepared, or he, of all people, knows better than to even attempt to play lock-step with those guys.
They're still around after 50 years so that should tell you something about how awesome this group is.
Santana and T.O.P. THAT's WHAT's HIP!! The best vocal performance I've ever seen of that song. Santana holds his own anywhere he goes or plays!!
One of the best groups that should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but has gotten snubbed for decades!!
You damn skippy JH. Great band
@@floatsting20 and skippy funky too
they'll eventually get in.
Fuck the rock and roll Hall of fame.
Agreed. I can dig it
That's the best old school funk rhythm section in the busines. Love Lenny Pickett's vocals on the original recording. What a fun band to listen and dance to!
Oh Yeah!!!! Such a tight group...could listen to this forever it seems!
Whuuuuttt!? With Santana!!? That HAD TO have been one helluva a concert. The ONLY way to have topped it would have been to have the ONE and ONLY Lenmie Williams!

absolutely awesome - saw them 30 yrs ago, still great!! got Lenny's autograph on the 1st T of P lp.. tell everyone he taught me "the Oakland stroke", lol.. FUNK DOESN"T GET ANY BETTER - HORNS DON'T GET ANY BETTER!

One of the best five bands I ever saw live, in 78, Las Vegas
Man, think of this horn section with EWF, Chicago, Kool & The Gang, WAR, Brass Construction, K.C. & Sunshine Band, B.T. Express and The JB's horn sections. If a time machine is every built, guess which decade I'm gonna visit. Great post.

Santana (the band) & TOP were neighbors, from the Oakland/SF area

The term 'hip' originated in the old west...used to identify a frequenter of Chinese opium dens, as customers would usually lay on their sides...on their hip.
HIP in this instance is black slang meaning "to undertand", "to know" It originated with the jazz artists
