Thanks for warning homeowners about the danger of tree volcanos - wish we’d known about this when hiring a landscape company 20 years ago. They did exactly this when installing several trees at our new home. Our beautiful maple tree now suffers severe root damage and I fear we will lose it one day. Unfortunately, many companies still practice this poor habit when installing trees on commercial and residential properties…

Could you make a video on Round beds people make around trees and then put annuals in the garden bed.
I don't see what's the difference between a tree volcano and that type of garden bed surrounding the trunk.
People's plants and trees in those garden beds seem to do fine ...

Having compost, mulch or plantings under a tree mimics what you see in nature and trees are quite content with that. The problem with a volcano is the piling up of soil or mulch up the trunk and covering the root flare. If you're going to put a round (or other shaped) bed around a tree you should plant the tree up a bit high so that when you mulch you can feather the material away from the flare.
Provided those beds are made at ground level, they are not a problem. You start having problem when you mound soil or mulch up to raise the bed.
@@Gardenfundamentals1 Yeah, I forgot about those raised beds around trees that you see sometimes -- the ones with bricks or other edging and filled in with a foot of soil. 🤦♀
If you have a mulch "donut" so there is no mulch actually touching the tree bark or root flare, A) is that OK? and B) how much space to leave between bark and piled up mulch? Thanks.
Would that much moss on the trunk also be an indication that the tree is unhealthy? It's unable to fight off invasive species.
Moss and lichen don't harm the tree. Moss can indicate wetness.
