It was neat seeing downtown and Fleur Drive! The city building the MLK Beltway was one of the smartest things ever completed in the history of Des Moines. Can you imagine the traffic jams if it WEREN’T built?
Growing up in rural Iowa as a kid, in retrospect to someone who lives in Des Moines now (and will for the rest of my life), and from the stories I’ve heard, Des Moines was a real shithole back in the 80s! But I’m 2018, it’s gorgeous! We are much better off now!
Also, Fleur seems so rural back then!
    Thanks for sharing this!

Thanks Nathan, glad you enjoyed it. Fleur wasn't so different then. Golf course to the East and homes with large lots on the West. :)

Well people got along just fine without the MLK road. Just keep building roads, roads to go to roads, and other roads. Maybe level all of downtown DSM and make it a road, then it wont be a shithole.

Damn I only imagine what Des Moines will look like in 2078 with all these new things the city is adding, plus the fact its rapidly growing now and considered one of the best cities to live in.

I wasn’t born for another 13 years, but this is cool to see. Born and raised in beautiful DSM. Downtown has changed so much in my time the perspectives from the late 70’s are neat.

Here is my best attempt at figuring out the route: North on 7th ave viaduct
Right on either Locust or Court
East Court to tunnel bridge then curve north on Day Street by Capitol Hill
North on E 12th past Lucas State Office Building
West on E Walnut past State Capitol Building
East 9th to Grand Avenue by Wallace Building with mirrored glass reflection of Capitol building
West on Grand Avenue towards Veterans Memorial Auditorium
Drive by Younkers at 713 Walnut
    Eastbound again towards Judicial Building
Westbound on Grand to Fleur by Tech high school at 15th and Center. Terrace Hill in background.
Southbound on Fleur Drive past Park Avenue then a left on Watrous by Wakonda Club Golf Course.

Nice artistic eye. I've shot a lot of stop-motion as well, in DSM and elsewhere, but you did a great job of capturing some recognizable locales of that city, and making it look like life.

My dad's shop is on the left of frame at 19 seconds in. It was called Roush Implement and was moved to Truro in 1968. You can't go north of court on 5th now. I've been trying to locate a picture of that building for years. Is there any chance of copying a photo off of original frame? Thanks for sharing!

You might want to ask if they have one at the Historical museum at 6th and Grand or at the Iowa Genealogical Library across the street from it. Might find a microfilmed newspaper photo, too. Good luck! :)

You could try slowing it with the TH-cam controls. It may be a bit fast at .5, but .25 is too slow.
