Having watched your great tribute the late and astounding Joey D. I do notice something that amazes me which I have strangely noticed elsewhere. There is one other great musician and music analyst and teacher like yourself, Levi, namely Rick Beato who I also watch very regularly and like you have bought many of his great teaching products. Total respect to you both.
The (to me) strange common thing between you both that is surprising is the decided lack of mention or interest it would seem in one of Joey's own strongest associates early on in the 90s and perhaps mentors in music - John McLaughlin. From around 93 through 96 and afterwards too Joey was on tour with John and on some of his best ever live albums too!
John is one of the most astounding and contributive/influential guitarists, composers and musicians over the last 50 years in the fusion, jazz, world and modern technical rock and his works with Joey were mind boggling - technically, creatively, musically. But not a mention? I've noticed this also with Rick B. It seems so strange that people with such all round talent and passion and knowledge of music seem to miss one of its greatest exponents.
Now I know this is a tribute to Joey, and no platform for John McL - nor my own passions of music - but surely it would be fitting to mention some of Joey's most firey works - alongside John McLaughlin, Dennis Chambers or Elvin Jones?! I see youve included a track in the playlist - good on ya for that.
Anyway - thanks for featuring this piece on on of the greatest musicians to have graced our world - Joey D!

yeah, I put it on the playlist, but by and large I'm not really into John's playing at all. He's one of the fathers of the sound, and I'm happy to acknowledge his importance in history, but just not my jam unfortunately.
Having said that, the nature of Joey's skill is that he played with LOADS of amazing players like John, I'd have been here all day if I listed them all.
But I will pin your comment, because I want other people to see all your links :)

One of my favourite pieces of music is Joeys solo on Sunny with Pat Martino!

Thanks, Levi. Yeah, Joey is a special talent. I loved the clip where Miles Davis asked a local TV host “what’s the name of your organ player?”. Miles knew he was special and all his friends growing up said “of course he was destined to play with Mikes Davis at such a young age.”

Danny Gatton got me onto him. Saw them play together at The Bottom Line, opening for John Mayall.

Wonderful video dude! I kept seeing a thumbnail of Joey holding a sax and never watched the video, but after that trumpet clip...hot damn. Need to dive deeper into Joey.

Levi, we share the same tastes. I saw Joey and Danny at Blues Alley 94. I think it must have been summer? I think it was Danny's second to last show. My memory sucks. Anyway, I found myself next to Joey in the bathroom before the show. I say to him, "Relentless is like my favorite album". He says "thanks". Soooo awkward. Every time I recall that episode I shutter.
