In today's show I react to Arsenal's 2024/25 Premier League fixture list, after it was revealed this morning. I also round up yesterday's international action, discuss Karl Hein possibly signing a new contract and look at what you've been saying about Arsenal's midfield plans this summer.

Charles you’re looking at the start of the season the wrong way, those teams have to play US. We won at Spurs two years in a row and we owe Villa
I’d rather face City away at the start of the season than at the end, like the past two seasons. City tend to have a slow start to the season, and really hit the ground running at the end, so facing them at the start of the season is actually the best. And those last two months for the run in is a dream for us! Let’s have a great season both in the Prem and CL, COYG!
We need to start thinking and speaking like a big club! I don’t care who we play because Real Madrid, Bayern & City are not thinking who they play next; they just prepare to smash teams.
Hi Charles, I am really sad at the loss of Kevin Campbell. Thanks for your tribute to Kev, your reflections on him from being a young Arsenal supporter to being a reporter and for highlighting all the tributes to him on the channel - it shows how much he was loved overwhelmingly by all.
Not worried about the big teams so much. Where we have come unstuck has been losing to teams we are expected to beat

Recruitment-wise, we shouldn’t be immediately labeling any player as just a 6 or just an 8. Before coming to Arsenal, I never even considered the idea of Rice being an 8 or Ben White being an inverted RB, but they can do the jobs well. Arteta is able to teach these players new ideas and skills so even if we sign someone that is only known for one position they could end up being used for another. The potential to learn is what matters here

Extra Time Comment:
I keep seeing comments suggesting Declan Rice should play 6 because he is really good as a 6…possibly world class. What does a 6 do for a side? Cleans things up. Breaks up play and provides cover for the defense.
As a 6, Rice does the same thing. He just does it further up the pitch. On Arteta’s first day as manager one of the things he stated (and has stated consistently since) is that he wants to play in the other team’s half. With Rice playing as an 8, he cleans up, breaks up play, and provides cover to the defense. He just does it in their half.
We consistently pinned teams deep in their own halves and Rice playing so far up the pitch was a big reason why we were so successful.
Putting Declan in a 6 role exclusively limits the flexibility of the side. We need to open our minds to the possibilities afforded to us by playing Declan so far up the pitch.
An international break after 3 matches is insane, fully agree getting the squad back together and settled is vital. This schedule on the players is insane especially if you're on international duty.

Looking at the "flipped" fixture list, it works great if we don't start horribly slowly, as we seem to have done recently. No point getting to that run-in, but being 12 points behind Citeh when we do!
Joao neves makes sense on so many levels. Can play the 6 and so well
I think we need to look at what Arteta wanted to do with Havertz in that 8 position. More of a dynamic 8 that can create and offer something on attack.
Imo we are looking at this the wrong way , Arteta's way of playing is different. Not just defining a player as a 6 or an 8 . Arteta wants fluid players who can swap and move around to suit the game.

I'm still not convinced by Raya. That £30 mil could go towards other more urgent signings.

Extra Time - Hi Charles and James, I hope you're both well, this is a great and informative channel. I always look forward to this show and all the daily updates. So for England, Rice was excellent as usual. Saka was brilliant in bursts and I agreed with you that he should have gone off around 60 mins to conserve him for the next game. Now England has their first three points, do you believe Southgate will make changes, swap out Saka and a few others for the next game, and put trust in some of his new blood to play 60-70 mins like Mainoo, Gomez, Gallagher and Eze
wow those first three away games, they could be the defining moments of the season and right at the start. So me thinks we have to hit the season at a sprint and run just running. But once out of the way and if the others have a slow start, then it could really work in our favour. So we really need to concentrate from the off and rid ourselves of the Villa curse second game in, so to be able to be in a settled mindset, for the following games and indeed the season.
Talking of ‘market opportunities’, would be happy if we went out to get Fofana as an 8 rumoured to be only £30 million as he pushes to leave.
For a new midfielder, I don't know why we aren't going for João palhinha. Proven premier league player, top quality , not too expensive

I wonder whether Arteta can incorporate Sambi Lokonga into the midfield. He needs some development, but there is a good player in there somewhere!
I'm happy that we'll get the Spurs and Man City away games out the way at the start but not the first couple of games. I much prefer that rather than have to play those away games in November/December when the weather is bad, we're more likely to have multiple injuries and traditionally we seem to lose form at that time of year.
As well as more versatile players mentioned in the comments, even if we sign somebody who (for example) is only known as a 6 ,there's no guarantee that Arteta will play him in that position. He signed Rice as a 6 and plays him at 8. He signed Havertz as a midfielder and plays him at false 9 , He signed Timber as a right back/right central defender and stuck him on the left. He signed Kiwior as a centre back and plays him at left back and so on.
Just because Arteta signs someone who always plays in a certain position doesn't mean he won't stick him somewhere else.
Charles love the show, really insightful but you look two far ahead when you are looking at the fixtures. We have 38 games to play and to win the league we will have to have a better season than we had last season and I’m sure Arteta and the entire staff will do anything to be ready and have a better season than before. Let’s enjoy the Euros and then wait until the season starts and enjoy another season of The Arsenal doing what they have done in the last 2 seasons and this time winning the whole thing. Personally I’m excited about the fixtures I know this Arsenal is capable of beating any team. Come on you gunners

Hi Charles and James, hope you are well! What’s your view on bringing in a striker equivalent of Trossard/Jorginho, or Arsenal equivalent of Joselu? Specifically thinking about Fullkrug，Dovbyk, Guirassy? We need another big man to rotate Kai just as we need another pacing winger. Should be very high value considering current market.
Keep up the good work and James keep up the twitter wits and jokes . I particularly like the ‘Et tu Theo’ tweet in that 3-3 S’ton draw. Almost made that night more sufferable.
Just regarding Declan being used as a left 8, I think you need to understand that Arteta doesn't stick as strictly with positions within formations as you are likely used to seeing.
DK Falcon released a recent video showing the rotational play Arteta prefers, and in that, Declan is a vital cog, not just defensively, but in the attacking phases as well.
Not just that, but he assists Odegaard in pressing higher up the pitch, albeit a little deeper, which helps to lockdown the midfield, similarly to how Kante was deployed at one point when he was at Chelsea.
Hi Charles. Any truth on the Osimhen links? Also, for me, best time to face City, is the start of the season.

City Away on my birthday 💀 will also be in Texas that day too. No usual Spurs at home in September this season then...
If we are behind City by the end of Feb, then we will struggle to win it. Can't see them dropping points in March, April or May.
Hi Charles i think if we keep Partey i think Declan in the 8 role will work if Partey stays fit otherwise i think we need to play Vieira more he looks like a player that needs to play to build up some confidence and then i think in the league cup games we should give Timber a run there and have a go at that 6 role and Nwaneri needs to get some game time please Arteta

Have you seen the reports linking us to Xavi Simmons? Would you be willing to sign him on loan this season? He can play on either wing and has that X factor that we are looking for. What are your thoughts on his performance against Poland?

Win or avoid losses in those away games, and the title's in the bag. Arteta will have to learn to rotate, ESR would be like a new signing. Pricing him at £30m is giving him away, we paid more for Vieira, and he is dross!
Don't think the start is as bad as you're making out CW. Most teams will be affected by the summer tournaments. There have been tougher starts. No doubt Arteta and Edu will be motivated to settle the team from GW1.

What do you think about a more jorginho type of player coming into the side? Someone who has outstanding progressive passing numbers but hopefully a little younger. I was checking out Stiller from Stuttgart, and he has a very similar profile on fbref to jorgi, but it is only 23. Are there any other players like that out there?
Extra Time- Hi Charles and James, I don't know if I have missed it but Osimhen rumours have increased with talk of a reduced price due to him either wanting a move, or Napoli having to sell this summer. Secondly, I am more worried about safeguarding our no.6 spot with Rice, than him being our left 8. I agree we won't find a better replacement for Rice at 6, even if Partey stays. Easier to find an upgrade via a left 8.

Extra time - Would it be worth moving Odegaard to lcm? Feels like him and Saka sometimes get in each other's way and Martinelli is the type of player who would need love from an Odegaard more than Saka

If Declan is tired after Euros, then we missing both a 6 (cause Jorginho also played Euros) but we also miss our corner taker.
We need a 6/8 because of Rice takes corner as an 8, we will need someone who can cover any counter attack as a 6

The mid field decision between 6&8, looking at Artetas preference wont he look for a versatile player who can do both positions like Rice. That way creates options to swap during a game and crest more options along with the pivot from Rfb and Lfb?
Rice is one of the best 6's in the world. Viera and ESR are not good enough for the 8. We need to buy a top quality 8 imo

With the news on Osimhen ramping up and if we use rice in the 6, which now does seem like a logical solution, I have a feeling that Havertz will come back into midfield.

Man U and Spurs home games on a Tuesday is a joke, especially for fans abroad for whom that's typically a work/school day. Really hoping those get rescheduled for weekend kickoffs due to domestic cup/CL commitments.

I actually dont agree at all that the fixtures are unfavourable ... Wolves at home is pretty much exactly what you want as a first game and I think its really good that we play City at the Etihad first and then have our home game later in the season ... Also City tend to have a slow start to the season ... Villa and Tottenham away are difficult but we would have said exactly the same if we would have had to play Liverpool, United, Newcastle, Chelsea, Everton or even Brighton and Crystal Palace away from home ... And we really dont know yet If Villa and Tottenham are even among the best Teams next year ... So I think your view is really slightly pessimistic there, Charles 😉

In the first 11 games we have away games at Villa, Spurs, City, Newcastle and Chelsea. Brutal.

If you had to choose between a tough start to the season with a relatively easy run-in at the end or the other way around, which would you prefer? I would rather a tough start, and then have an easier run in because energy levels are often less coming towards the end of the season, and if arsenal aim to go deep in cup competitions, you don't want to have tough fixtures in the cup and league at the same time. What do you think?

After the stress of a tougher run in last season compared to City,
Haven’t seen the fixtures yet but going by Charles’s comments, I’m certainly much happier to have a tougher start and and an ‘easier’ less stressful run in.
It means Edu and Arteta will have to get on with both their jobs this summer of buying players early enabling a good pre-season etc thereby ensuring we are ready from Day 1

You can catch tough teams cold who are adjusting to their new signings/ way of playing. It gives Arteta and Edu a big opportunity to make sure Arsenal are the most prepared team and get the perfect start.

We play Southampton away last game of the season… is this a sign that we will win the league and I will be able to witness us lift the trophy as an imposter 😂???
Surely England-Iceland was a bigger upset than an old Belgium side losing to Slovakia

With this tough start, I think it now takes selling Partey off the table in the summer. With no summer international tournament and a good run to end the season, having him for those first 5 games is essential for the start we need to eventually win the League.

Extratime - Charles, is it worth signing a CB this year even though we have Timber back now so Kiwior can be covered for Saliba and Gabriel? After the last 2 seasons were so close, it would be very hard to take something happening to either one of our starting CBs. In my opinion, I feel like we should, but it most likely will depend on how much money we can recoup from sales this summer. What do you and James think?
I wouldn't want these tough games at the end of the season, plus Chelsea; Liverpool; and Chelsea are tough games too, there's no "ideal" fixture.

A MF 6/8: I really think Sandro Tonali should be the target. Consider: Newcastle have to sell but they desperately don't want to sell Guimaraes or Isak. Sandro Tonali is a better tackler than both Guimaraes & Zubimendi. He's a better passer than Onana & Luiz. He's equally as good passer as Zubimendi and equally tough as Luiz or Neves. He has better football intelligence than Onana and doesn't make blunders. Personally, he would do well to have one season where he trains alongside Jorginho every day. And with Paqueta facing a LIFETIME ban, and his own having missed a whole season, I think Sandro Tonali is very likely 100% rehabilitated. Further, that one month he did play for Newcastle in the Premier League -- he looked AWESOME. There will not be any need for adjustment or cultural assimilation going from Newcastle to London. His ceiling as a "great" player is higher than David Luiz and Zubimendi & Neves. He can be physical like Onana and Guimaraes. He can even play box-to-box or #6 switching throughout the game with Rice. For me, this is an easy decision: Newcastle Need money and we can get Sandro Tonali for, what, 50 million'ish?!

I see Man City have an easy run in.. very similar to last season whereas we have Liverpool and Newcastle in the last four games
Hello Charless, Love your show. The fixtures gives us alot to think about and makes it even moe important that we get all deals done by end of july. it makes it feel much better that some important players like white, timber,odegard, jesus, are not playing right now and will be fresh for the start of training.
There's a balance with the fixtures. Getting that man city away game out of the way early without worrying about tying it in with the European fixtures could be a plus, for us more than them given their squad strength.
#extratime Would you rather Saka have a staring role for England but comes back late and struggles next season or England get dumped early and Saka has a staring role in our tough fixtures? I’m Irish so easy answer for me but what about you both?

How is the money not there... We made 92 million euros from the champions league alone, and a ton of money from finishing second in PL meanwhile chelsea who are in the absolute mud seem to spend as much as they see fit. This club has no ambition.
