    Thanks 4 that I've not heard this one b4 it's pretty. Well when i found out that my teacher had died i went to the piano and let out my emotion by playing Rachmaninov's Elegie (Op 3-no 1) and i think that was my main influence for this piece. I even borrowed one of the chords from the piece, (1st heard at about 1:22 in this video). I also feel i was influenced by his Etude Tableau Op39-8 that i was learning at the time. it's in the same key... D minor does something funny to me... :)

    Strange that I haven't found out about your channel until now, you've just got a new subscriber! I like this piece, almost Debussy-like in some places, and ofc good old Rachmaninov :) Sorry about your teacher, the impact a great teacher can give to our lifes is unmeasureable, may he RIP.

    I loved the use of Phrygian mode inflections in this piece particularly at the start. The overall style is very nice it is like a combination of French impression and Jazz. Which makes sense because those schools are quite complimentary to each other, it is interesting because I also enjoy composing in this style.

    Great harmonies as always. That is what propels the piece for me. I also think you wrote a piece that would sound great with most string and woodwind instruments (guitar too). That is one catchy theme by the way. Even sounds good whistled!
    I do think you should get into Ravel and Barber's piano music (probably a total of three cds). Even your Gershwin influences sound closer to Ravel/Barber using jazz or older dance styles to me, but that's just me!

      Thanks... The use of artificial harmonics there was my friend (the violinist's) idea. I originally had the melody in octaves there, but his idea was much better. I always take tips from my friends who play the instruments I don't, if I'm writing for those instruments. :)

    Absolutely gorgeous. I'm curious, when you compose a piece, how do you begin-with a concept, with a chord structure, just experiment? What kind of schooling have you had, in composition , music theory and/or private piano instruction?
    I'm just beginning to develop compositions, but often feel there are gaps in my knowledge and ability due to lack of formal education.

    • @ankhsunamun49
      @ankhsunamun49  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Experimentation yes... 9/10 messing around on the piano until something hits me. It's usually a cool series of chords. I would say the best thing to do is to listen to as many different genres of music you can and try playing through lots different pieces on whatever your instrument is. I've found sometimes just the texture or feel of encountering a new piece inspires me. I would get Sibelius, or some other program with playback ability, so that you can experiment with how sounds fit together and have fun. I've been lucky to have been surrounded by music for most of my life. All through primary school, I had recorder lessons in school. I wrote my first song song aged 6, dictated to my dad, who notated it for me. I played violin for four years in junior school, although it wasn't really for me. I had piano lessons with a beginners teacher aged 6 and then a very good teacher from about 8/9 till I was 18. I was a chorister for 5 years, the last three of which I sang 11 times a week as a treble. I took up bassoon after my voice broke and played in the school orchestra. I learned a (very small) bit about jazz chords from a teacher that had a fairly sizeable impact on my harmony. I did loads of different music groups at uni. I think immersing yourself as much as possible in different musical experiences is a great catalyst for composition. I don't have a lot of formal music theory instruction, but I did study A level music (I got a B for this composition). I had a composition scholarship at uni for which I received regular tuition, and during studies abroad in the USA I enrolled in two composition classes at uni, consisting partly of the correct ways to notate things and partly of introducing us to a wealth of 20th century classical music.

    @DiyaKendle Thanks, i love experimenting with harmony. I usually write harmony b4 melody lol- maybe thats bad... glad you like it, i think the chords on my more recent stuff, satiefy included are more interesting though :) maybe if i had put up the score and you could see them you might agree with me. :) thanks so much... can you download it from here to put on your ipod?

  • @ankhsunamun49
    @ankhsunamun49  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @DanKreiger Thanks, thats one of my fave bits too. : ) . I've never really listened to Ravel but It's funny you mentioned Gershwin, in my most recently finished composition, Satiefy which i also uploaded, the section that starts at around 2:15 was my attempt at writing a Gershwin style prelude. :)

I'll send my email address through that. I enjoy looking for new contemporary music ever since I took a 20th century music course. Music that incorporates a lot of colorful harmonies is what appeals to me the most. You've got a talent. Continue to use it and don't let it go to waste.

    Hmmmm. I didn't think parallel fifths mattered really if you're using broken chords. I find when I'm writing these kind of arpeggios (which i do alot & probs too much) I often like 2 "ground" the chord at the bottom with tonic-5th-tonic. I'm always looking for more interesting harmonies though and if you listened to some of my newer stuff you might hear some more interesting chords. hmmm i need to get round to uploading some new things... but you could try "satiefy" for now. thanks 4 comment :)

    understand, the parallel fifths with seventh or 9th are not bad, are good .. but there are a LOT OF THEM, just don't abuse and use inverted chords too!!!... they are even more interesting than only chords in fundamental potition ..thats all!...
